My first and most obvious is slow play. My second is golfers who won't let others play through. My third is rain. However, my biggest moan is mucking around with handicaps in competitions. Handicaps were designed to even things up between golfers, when you take 5% or 10% off of them in a competition the playing field is no longer equal, so what's the point of having a handicap?

IMO The 5% or 10% reduction does equalize.  A 15 HCP tends to have more deviation in scoring and thus has a better chance at shooting a few stokes below average score than a 5 HCP.

Also it is not much of a difference.  A 15 HCP get lowered 1.5 strokes (10%) and a 5 gets lowered 0.5 strokes. A net 1 stroke difference.

Hello @wacker. And welcome to TST.

I agree Slow Play will be high up there as it's probably a Pet Peeve for many of us. For me, I'd say people who don't fix their ball marks on the green.... or possibly worse is people who improperly fix their ball marks on the green. 😖

Oh, another one for me is folks who pitch fits, slam clubs or carry on like emotional babies. "What's wrong with you?" It's just golf. 🤪

The handicap thing is probably its own thread.

18 holes. If I could wave a wand a round of golf would be 6 holes on the front and 6 on the back.😀

As much as I like 18 holes, I find my scoring total for the day is far lower on days where I only play twelve.

Hey Stu, last time I played with you it took both of us about 12 holes to warm up. We played great those last 4 or 5 holes! 🤪

I wish I could walk out of the house straight onto the first tee. Kind of like when you go for a run, BOOM, you're starting immediately. None of this commute, get your bag out of the trunk, pay, starter business. [In Dennis Hopper Voice] What a drag, man. I know, FWP. Peace out.

Kill slow play. Allow walking. Reduce ineffective golf instruction. Use environmentally friendly course maintenance.

The USGA, R&A, CONGU, EGA, Golf Australia, etc, reviewed millions of rounds of golf in their records to come up with their recommendations for those reductions, and I'm pretty sure they were doing their best to make things as even as possible.

I think @DaveP043 has hit the nail on the head. I really think they are all doing the best they can. Unfortunately, aside from assigning a rules official to follow everyone around the most likely cause of handicaps getting mucked up will likely continue to be the golfers themselves. I'm sure we can all name a sandbagger or two, or at least a golfer who "works the system". You know the guy. He finishes in the top 3 or so every season and when they announce his name instead of applause there's a low groan.
