9 iron  162

60°   90

All going to change very soon.  Losing about 5 yards on irons switching from RSi 1 to psi. And gaining yards by switching from G25 driver, G25 3wood and 913h to epic driver, 2017 M1 3wood and XR 4 hybrid. I play in brisbane and get plenty of roll and the ball travels further in the heat.

I have recently started to carry a card on my body with information on my distances to the course. At the moment it looks like this:

Dist.jpg

But after today's round, I noticed it might be short by about 3~5 yards, so I'll use the new information as interim and update this card if new numbers hold

I've been thinking about doing this!  How is it working out for you? I was considering throwing in results for wind conditions. Nothing too specific, just strong/light/no wind options maybe.  the only problem is that I can't seem to get an accurate range reading. Range and course yardages always change.  Do you use a range finder?

It's working out quite well, I'd say. These are "wind adjusted". If I need to carry 150 yards and there is a strong head wind, I'd grab my 4I instead of 5I, for example. Moreover, they are my expected and safe values with a lot of room for error, not average, mind you, so when the line is too tight, I just pick another target.

I do use a Callaway 300 rangefinder, no bells and whistles, but problem is range balls don't fly the same. I only get about 190 yards carry with my driver at the range, so the values in that table are obtained after many rounds on the course.

Yes I realize that's like 19 clubs the usual mix is D, 4w, 3h, 4i-PW, AW, and I mess with lofted wedges, can't work out what two or three lofted wedges to carry.

5 -  200-220

4 - 210-230

D - 285

I dont really full swing the wedges or even 9-8.

These are my averages from game golf apart from the 3-4 since I dont have enough shots on them for game golf to give an accurate reading. These are distances I would expect to hit of the tee or ideal lie. 3-4-5 I use off the tee and I can put a bit more force behind them so theres a range.

Driver is shooting a bit too high. Going to get on trackman later this season to see if I can do something about it and get a few more yards out of it.

I carry my driver about 270, and get more with bounce and roll.

3W- 240 yards

5w- 225 yards

3h- 220-225 (but a totally different flight and no roll when I need it.

4i- 210

5i- ~200

6i- 190

7i - 178 (average from lessons on launch monitor, the only one I remember exact off hand)

8i- 160

9i- 145

PW- 130

48* 110

52* 100 (sand wedge, this is my bunker saver, and I just feel every shot so well with it)

56* anything shorter

I really want to take a club out to put in my Edel 60*. I want it to be the hybrid, but I know I need that Stopping power sometimes. I may not change anything. But I love that 60 around the fringe. I pop it up hard, and it hits and hops and dies right there. It's gotten me up and down a thousand times. I could take out the 56 and put in the 60, but theres some distances i'm very sure of with the 56 that I know I can't do with the 60.

First world problems.

These are all estimated (from memory), properly calibrated swing software and hardware, including a trackman and launch monitor (we hit onto a real range in the summer from inside the monitor booth, and on to a projector in the winter)

Well now that I've been fit properly... and have a driver that is probably the most solid I have ever had I'm going to attempt to do this one more time

Driver (set at 10°):  260 (carry) 275 total

4-wood (16.5°):  230-240

Hybrid (20°):   220 (though I can hit this thing 230 on call and I can hit this thing 180 when I want, best hybrid ever, PERIOD)

3-iron (21°):    215

4-iron (24°):    202

5-iron (27°):    189

6-iron (31°):    176

7-iron (35°):    164

8-iron (39°):    152

9-iron (43°):     140

PW   (47°):      125- 112- 95-65

GW (52°):       110-99-83-55

SW (56°) :       ?- 85- 70-50

LW (60°)        ?- 75- 60- 45

I will alternate between 3-iron and 60° wedge depending on course, but by kind of going through my clock here I could probably get rid of the damn 52°.

All I will say is this. MUCH SHORTER THAN I USED TO! Admittedly I did hit a drive 299 last year but that was an anomaly, not something I can count on! If I can squeeze 240 out of a drive nowadays I'm as happy as a pig in slop! For the most part everything has been adjusted downward at least one club, and wind only complicates things. BTW I'm 65.

I believe it because I've seen it with my own two eyes. Last summer I played with a big country boy who came within a hair of driving the green (about 310). My jaw just dropped, I have never seen someone do that. He had an old yellow Nike Driver, probably available on eBay for $40. To look at this guy, playing in jean shorts and an old pair of basketball shoes, I'd never have guessed he could hit the ball so hard... But then, for his second shot, he chipped over the green, and damn near chipped over it again before three putting. Next hole, same thing: colossal drive, just missed the green to the left (about 300 yards) and then took at least 3 "chipping" attempts (or whatever the hell that was) from the rough before he got on the green, and then took at least 3 putts. By the fourth hole he walked off the course because the guys in front of us were playing "too slow" for his liking. The real reason I think, is, I was way ahead of him by then, even with my little peashooter from the tee.

dude, that is such a good write up, thank you!

I do not hit my driver to my full potential. I normally hit 2 iron off the tee. My driver swing speed is 124 mph and ball speed can get up to 180. My launch with the driver is too high and I draw it too much.

I play 20 year old clubs.  All my buddies brag about how far they hit it past me, but their 7i is stronger than my 5i.  I'm also getting terrible gapping with my 4-6 irons.  I have a mid-90s to sometimes upper 90's driver clubhead speed and my irons all have Dynamic Gold S300's.  Probably NOT the best shaft for my swing speed.  I feel I'd get better distance with a much better suited shaft.  Something with a mid-high trajectory.  And of course, if I were a better ball striker naturally my distance would improve.  Sometimes I get a little flippy with my hands trying to get the ball into the air, which really isn't gonna happen with those shafts anyways.

I am not a long hitter; and play to a 9 HI recorded on GHIN system.  Provided below are approximate yardages.  I don't know if could I hit longer that my handicap would get better but I am certain if I align better to the target and get the expected movement of the ball that I am looking for AND chip & putt better, that I could lower my HI.

Driver 245-255
3W 225-235
5W 200-210
7W 190-200

8 130-140
9 110-120
PW 100-110
52  80-90
56 70 or so (max)

For gaps in yardages, I choke down on a higher length club.   Hope that helps.

Cheers.

If all else stayed equal, I'd bet money that your handicap would get lower if you added an extra 10 or more yards to each of those distances. There's plenty of evidence out there that proves the closer you are to the hole after your tee shot, the closer on average your approach shot will be, and the lower your average score on that hole would be.
