Official 2013 U.S. Open at Merion Discussion Thread

Landing area on #16. The fairway bamks up to the right but it is very narrow and nobody will try to hit it up there. It's a short iron over the quarry to the hole, so they will most probably play shor

The ridiculous thing is not that Phil is flying back for his daughter's 8th grade graduation, it is that her school is even HAVING an 8th grade graduation.  Alas this is becoming far too common.

Just saw something on TGC which may be good karma for Phil -

They showed the Hogan plaque from the point in the 18th fairway where he hit the famous one iron from in 1950. In 2005 Phil tapped Jack's plaque located in the 18th fairway at Baltusrol before he hit his approach shot and sealed the victory. Would be great to see a repeat of this on Sunday.

I'm rooting for Phil. Five runnerup finishes, some of them heartbreaking. Would be great to see him break through this year.

With today's hi-tech equipment why aren't we seeing scores in the 50s?

Could it be that golf is still damned hard to play, and always will be?

I doubt if they tricked up ... er, toughened up the rough and narrowed the fairways as much as they did this year.

What's interesting is that after this Open, the "restored" Merion will close itself for wait ... wait .... Restoration !!

But the real bombshell in the Merion conversation was dropped by Ill, who revealed after a discussion of Merion's decade long restoration (tree removal, bunker work, etc...) that following the 2013 U.S. Open, several of the "restored" bunkers--which were actually shifted to pinch landing areas on holes like 2, 15, 16--will be restored to their previous positions.

Also of note was Fazio's prediction that after this week, the world of golf will be having a "very different" debate about the ball because of his belief that Merion will show that a course under 7,000 yards is plenty relevant in today's game. Relevant, that is, until the restored landing area bunkers are unrestored.

Just to make it interesting, they should make a rule that if you land on one of these plaques, you have to play it as it lies!

      Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.

      As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
