Welcome to TST! Sounds like your a pretty good golfer going through a bit of a rough patch. Consider posting a “My swing” thread and get some feedback on what might be causing your issues.

Thanks for the welcome HJJ003 and the swing thread idea! I might just do that 🙂 I think I know what I'm doing wrong, I just can't seem to stop it at the moment. It's all poor contact with irons. Last round I hit 11/15 fairways and the rest of my drives were near the fairway. No penalties. But just 1 GIR. Ughh...Maybe I can change that today. I play in a few hours.

-  Is the handicap as shown in your profile current .....say at least within the last 2 15-day revisions?

-  Is it correct and "official", or some form of guess/estimate/self-calculation?

-  If it's not current, correct, and official, why not?

-  If it's not correct and official, do you know how a handicap is actually calculated?  How are you calculating yours?

I don't have an official HI. Up until this year I've never considered playing in a tournament so I've never bothered to get an HI.

I have a spreadsheet and have checked and rechecked to make sure that the formula used (much more complicated than I thought it was) and the math for the entered scores are correct. I have played so irregularly in the past that I had to go back 3 years to get 20 rounds. I "think" I'm better than I was 3 years ago but the sample size is so small. Add to all this that I'm certain there are "mulligans" in most of my past scores so I'm probably higher than the ~18 I've calculated and listed.

All that said.... my goals for 2019 are to significantly improve my game (lessons! practice!), play 15+ rounds of golf, keep score ACCURATELY for each of the rounds that I play. I may join a club in 2019. If not, I will join one in 2020 so I can play some tournaments. So yes, an official handicap is in my not too distant future.

Looking through the thread at the arguments for and against handicap has certainly been interesting.

Count me among those who do not have an "official" handicap index. I do maintain a spreadsheet that contains all the relevant formulae and it is accurate. Some might say "What's the use?'.  They are right, but at least gives me a constant reference when playing various courses. I no longer compete and am chronologically impaired.

My handicap was current as of November 1st, 2018.

I've actually played in November, December and January. But for one reason or another didn't put them into my handicap. (For example we played "worst shot" or something.)

I use a phone ap to keep my handicap. For years I had an official one with a card and everything. Now I just keep it on my phone.

Since I've been playing a lot more golf I was thinking of going back to keep an "official" one. But I think I'm going to wait until the new handicap rules come out.

My bag is an ever-changing combination of clubs.

A mix I am forever tinkering with.

13.0.     Will likely go up a full point in the next one as my personal best score (a fluke of a round) will come off the list.

Since 10/4/18, it went 13.3 -> 13.4 -> 13.5 -> 14.4 -> 13.6 -> 13.0 -> 13.0.      13.0 is still my best ever HI.   I can't seem to go below that though.

Seeing the 2019 Newport Cup thread reminded me to add my scores from my fall Kentucky and Pinehurst trips into my spreadsheet.

Thanks to some decent golf on some tougher courses than I usually play, handicap dropped from 9.5 to 8.7.

Mine is official and as current as possible. The course I play is on winter rules and GHIN won't accept new scores from me on that course. Fortunately (or unfortunately :-() I haven't shot better than my abysmal handicap since the course went winter so new scores wouldn't change it.

Despite letting some REALLY good rounds get away from me, I have managed to drop to a 20.9. I really want to see something in the teens this year! I’m working hard at it. 20.5 is my lowest ever so I’m getting close.

    • I’ll have to pay attention more attention to the area when I’m there. I know the area to the left of the bunkers off the tee is fescue/native vegetation but I can’t remember what’s around the tee boxes. Something to consider still is that you can’t see the green from the tee. You can’t even see all three bunkers IIRC. So I could have a line on the drive but still not know where it ends up. I think I’d be a lot more comfortable going with driver if I played here more regularly and had a log in my head of where shots tend to end up like I do at the other county courses. I have never hit driver on this hole off the blue tees. I have done it from the gold, but the length and angle are different, and during casual rounds when I didn’t care that much about score. I’m not sure the best time to try it is the second hole of a tournament. Or at the very least, I’m uncomfortable with the idea and that’s probably enough reason not to do it. I see what you’re saying. Wind is supposed to be pushing out more to the right on Saturday, too. I could probably aim right at the bunker and not end up in it. I don’t think there’s anything near the green other than that tiny bunker that would give me trouble. Well, trouble in addition to my short game deficiencies that is. Yea, me too. All I’m thinking is get it in play, put it near the green, chip on and two putt for 5. I’ll have plenty of opportunities to use my length as an advantage later. You realize all of this theory crafting will be moot when I chunk it off the tee, right? 😆

    • However, have you ever considered using small summer houses for such setups? They offer a great solution for creating dedicated practice areas, especially for an affluent audience looking to enhance their outdoor living space.
    • I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.
