Winter Depression Thread

There were frozen pools of water on a few of the greens last Sun. Strange considering we had a string of 50 degree or better days. The greens take a beating in the winter. The ball has enough velocity it will leave a sizeable mark but you can't repair it because just the top 1/4" or so isn't frozen. What does thaw is loose and squishy. Here the courses get desperate because they need to money so they open. Fortunately grass is hardy here but boy do the carts tear it up when the ground is wet. Some courses don't have continuous paths so at some point carts are on turf.

Riverdale is in fair shape, but as you have noted fairways and greens have only thawed on the very surface. Geese and those who have no concept of "winter rules" and repairing damage to fragile turf are indeed doing considerable damage. Cart path only should be called till things get better, but I have noticed that even when CPO is in effect a lot of folks ignore it.

Judging from past experience the grounds crew at Riverdale will have the course in fine shape by mid April in spite of this.

I struck two buckets of balls today at lunch.  It was a good day to golf

Tennessee has had some great weather the past several day's.  Sunday temps in the mid 50's hit 3 buckets of balls, which gave me a opportunity to work on some swing changes that I'm in the process of making.  Monday temps in upper 50's hit 2 buckets and played 11 holes, not my best with 4 fir and 4 gir, but still shot 41 on the front 9.  Today temps in the upper 60's I only hit one bucket, I had to work tonight so I didn't play.  The forecast for the 10 days is not great low 40's with a chance of snow Monday.  So back to reps in the house until?

Crazies at my club were playing over the weekend in sub-freezing temperatures (high of 29) and on frozen greens. Not my thing, and that would only make me more depressed. Pass.

I just don't put a lot of effort with putting on the frozen greens.    Everything else is pretty much the same - unless you're a big divot taker, that would be problematic in the frozen tundra.   Cold golf is better than no golf in my book ...

Easily solved by playing the round like you were hitting long chip shots. Everything bounces like you were hitting cartpath anyway. Frozen golf is a unique experience and should be treated as such.

Well it's snowing again. But it's suppose to be in the 50's over the weekend and beyond. Hopefully I can get out in the morning of the SuperBowl. Otherwise I'll be snowboarding I guess.

Just got back from the range this afternoon. I wanted to make sure I had a chance to swing a club at a ball this month because I saw that we're getting some snow coming in, but 32° with a wind chill in the low 20°s turns out to be just about my lower bound for golf. Tried using a winter glove on my right hand (regular golf glove on left), and I couldn't get any feel, so I ditched it and just blew on it a bit after every swing. Yardages were pretty solid even though the balls were frozen solid. Got a bit shanky going into my long irons. Happened last winter too; I think I'm not as loose and don't transfer my weight as well as I should, so my swing gets a bit armsy. Got it back once I consciously started getting forward and going after the ball. Driver continued to be really solid and getting better. Hit good drives vs. bad ones by about a 2-1 margin, and bad were just a fade that got away from me, as opposed to the big slices I had before. I wish I could see how far the balls rolled out on this rock hard turf; that'd have been good for the ego!

Hopefully the snow doesn't hit too bad and temps bounce back into the high 30s, low 40s so I can get some actual golf work in.

Now that I'm trying to golf, the weather forecasts have taken on much greater significance than at any point in my previous existence. One funny thing is that the online (weather.com) forecast seems to always be 3-5 degrees more optimistic that the local tv types say.

It's either supposed to be 42 (TV) or 45 (web). Cloudy, but no rain either way. Definitely playing.

Well, no golf for us here in the UK. Last week it was gale force wind and this week its snow!! According to the weather reports its snow from off the east coast of America. Its also the "wrong" type of snow. American snow is too moist apparently!

There is only a very tiny bit left in the Dayton area. Generally places that get no sun. I actually went down to Cincinnati on Saturday and played snow-free.

Really hope I didn't just jinx the whole thing saying that.

Well it's snowing again. But it's suppose to be in the 50's over the weekend and beyond. Hopefully I can get out in the morning of the SuperBowl. Otherwise I'll be snowboarding I guess.

Well, the Super Bowl is still over a week and change a way so if the weather is in the 50's over the weekend and beyond, that shouldn't prohibit you from going golfing before the Super Bowl Sunday.

So, there's still snow and ice on the ground here in Albany and I'm headed down to NYC tomorrow and snow is apparently going to be dumped there on Saturday.

My brother lives in Beavercreek and we played Kittyhawk (http://www.golf-dayton.com/index.html) over Thanksgiving. Dayton normally has weather similar to Pittsburgh, although we do get a little more lake effect snow. Right now there are 2-3 inches on the ground with little hope of playing until February.
