Winter Depression Thread

Well the light dusting of snow has all melted and I just got an email saying the courses here will be open tomorrow.

Even though it will be only mid-40's tomorrow, I will be out there...  Just hope there is no wind.  I don't mind mid-40's but the wind is another story.

I have to admit that the last couple of months have been a little tough to take. Got the official word from the weatherman last night. Of the last 56 days, 51 of them have had some sort of precipitation. In my area this means snow, sleet, freezing rain, rain, or UNRELENTING TORRENTIAL DOWNPOURS!

The flood warnings have been up the past 2 days, and now we get the word of an ice storm heading our way! Of course, this will affect many more people than just me. This system supposedly stretches from Texas to New York! Supposed to lay up to 1/2" of ice on everything. That will be fun!

Did you go play on the cape?

No. Work gets in the way this time of year.

I hate to talk about playing here in NC while all of you in the Northern states are not able to get out. We usually play year round here in Charlotte except for the occasional cold snap when highs don't reach the 40s. I know we are miserable when those periods come and last over a week, but I always feel some guilt when I think that a lot of you won't get out until April (my son lived in Wisconsin for four years). Sure there's golf on TV. However, watching the Tour play in Hawaii doesn't help much I'm sure. I guess the only thing that evens the score a little is when we have those weeks of 95*+ in July and August.

All I can say is hang in there my brothers in golf and keep going to those indoor ranges.

Found a heated driving range here in WI (Vitense Golf Range) that was so dang well-heated that the girlfriend was hitting from the mat barefoot, and I put my winter hat back on just to shield my head from the intensity of the heat. They run a $14 special of a bucket that normally costs $10, paired with a hot dog, fries, and a beer (Lagunitas!). And there was a flatscreen with the NFL game (Packers, duh) at every stall. If this is what golf is like in the mid-west, I can get used to this!

That said, before we went out to the range, we managed to book a weekend trip down to Florida for warm-weather golf in two weeks. Having a girlfriend who loves golf and has a half million airline points from work travel definitely qualifies as a keeper! :-*

For the next week we are forecast to be in the 40s and 50s.   It will be too wet to play but it does inspire me to hit the indoor range and the simulator.

Too wet!?!?  That is what water proof golf shoes are for.  Man up and get out there!  ;-)

If I didn't have my daughter I would meet you somewhere... The range at Greenland even...

I was thinking about what I read in The Farmer's Almanac in the fall, saying this would be a snowy winter. Winter's not over yet, but it's been pretty tame so far, just one storm and poof, melted away quickly. Here's to the Almanac being blatantly wrong. Hopefully. :-)

Kill slow play. Allow walking. Reduce ineffective golf instruction. Use environmentally friendly course maintenance.

If winters were all like this, I don't believe I'd be looking to be a snow bird.   We've seen high 40s all week.   Of course about the time I decide to put the snow blower away, we'll get a dump.

I slogged 18 at a local goat track.  I am not sure I have ever played on wetter turf or denser fog. I teed off on the par 3 second hole with a vague idea where the green was. One time, on a drive that disappeared in the fog, I measured via GPS to a spot in the fairway where I thought the ball might have landed.  Found it plugged so deep I need my pitch mark tool to pry it out.

One positive was that it was free (kid in the clubhouse was headed out and said have at it).  Also, as the only one on the course, pace of play was not an issue.

Oh, I have waterproof shoes. Unfortunately, the courses around here don't have waterproof fairways! When balls plug so deep you have no chance of finding them, I'll be content with the Golf Dome!

I even got an e-mail from a local course saying they'd be open this weekend. Thinking of where they were located I couldn't imagine it.

Besides, my buddy and I had a pheasant hunt scheduled, as much for the dogs as for us. They were bouncing off the walls! We slogged through sucking mud, standing water, running water, and every other kind of water! We probably walked 6 to 8 miles, and the dogs 4 times that easy!

We dragged our butts out of there just whipped! We put the dogs back in their boxes and sat on the tailgate for a while just enjoying the sunshine and mild air. The dogs went to sleep and never stirred. We had plenty of time to hunt another spot, but we decided to bag it. We had gotten a bird apiece, and my buddy's young GSP bitch, his "up and comer" had made her very first retrieve. All in all, a very successful day!
