Ok so @rehmwa posted that -31F is -23.8C, how is -31C not colder than -23.8C?? Am I not asking the question correctly?

I am just as confused as you are now.

Ok, all joking about @colin007 aside, -31°F is colder than -31°C.

°F = 1.8 x (°C) + 32

so, -31°C = -23.8°F

or

°C = (°F - 32) / 1.8

so, -31°F = -35°C

-35°C

Your rule is right here:

If both numbers are the same but less than -40, Celsius is colder. If both numbers are the same but greater than -40, Fahrenheithen is colder.

But you misapplied it to the negative values. -31 is greater than -40, so Fahrenheit is colder.

Wow, I just realized how stupid I am.  How come nobody called me out?

Whats with the kid gloves????

Sorry, I wanted to post this earlier, but I was cooking and then eating dinner. That's why I said I was confused earlier, because I thought you were wrong and didn't have the time to prove it, which is odd, since I usually trust your math skills more than mine. Guess that's what I get for putting too much faith in an engineer :-P

Good grief!

The deep freeze is occurring not just on the outside.

Going back to the topic, I was thinking maybe I can play a round of golf sometime next week, but it does not look like it in CO.

I'm not sure where I misapplied something to the negative values.

If both numbers are the same but less than -40, Celsius is colder.

-100 C = -148 F

-100 F = -73.3 C

In both these instances, -100 is less than -40.  Therefore, since the bigger negative number translates to it being colder, -100 C is colder than -100 F.

Colder -100 C -73.3 C Warmer
-148 F -100 F
If both numbers are the same but greater than -40, Fahrenheit is colder.

0 C = 32 F

0 F = -17.8 C

In both these instances, 0 is greater than -40.  Therefore, since the bigger negative number translates to it being colder, 0 F is colder than 0 C.

Colder -17.8 C 0 C Warmer
0 F 32 F

This is a good visual, IMO:

Colder -100 C -73.3 C -40 C -17.8 C 0 C Warmer
-148 F -100 F -40 F 0 F 32 F

You didn't, I apologize. I thought you were saying @colin007 was wrong, like @Golfingdad , but you didn't.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
