  1. 1. On the most recent occasion where you spent $100 or more on one or more golf clubs did you buy at a big chain, an independent standalone golf store, a course pro shop, or online.

This is pretty self explanatory.  We are all the target audience for golf equipment sellers.  So after the what makes a good golf store thread I started wondering about the actual actions of folks.  Hence the poll.

So to make it more specific and avoid ambiguities I set the parameter of a purchase of at least $100 and it be specifically a club purchase.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

I bought a Titleist Vokey SM5 at my local Golf Galaxy last year. Well technically I had to order it from their website, but it qualifies as big golf chain, I think.

And another - locally owned chain. When you say big chain I think something nationwide.

Last purchase over $100 was 3 irons and a hybrid from callawaypreowned - basically because they take paypal and my account was loaded from all the old equipment I sold on ebay.

- Golf range as part of the facilities to try the irons with real(ish) ball flight
- Fantastic trade-in value on the old irons

ha ha, the last time I spent over $100 to buy a club was a Taylormade Firesole, so that must have been 2000? Since then I have bought a ton of equipment for not a ton of money, mostly from thrifts, pawnshops, and other golfers.

I voted independent which was as close of a description as I could get. I purchased my component metal woods from and a private club maker/swing instructor about 7 years ago. I did purchase my current set of irons based on my swing specs  over the internet from Golf USA in Manhattan, Kansas.  Once I received them, I had my club maker/swing instructor checked the specs out for me. They came as ordered.

Last time I was in a retail golf outlet store was to purchase a tennis racquet for my grand daughter. ;-)

Last club purchase was my Edel putter, which I think is technically purchased directly from the manufacturer through the fitter?  I don't know, but by process of elimination, I chose "small, independent store."  That was about a year ago, IIRC.

Prior to that I got my irons and wedges, also from a fitter, 2 1/2 years ago.

My 3 wood and hybrid were the last two club that I just bought off the rack and those were from Golfsmith (brick and mortar) a little more than 3 years ago.

Ditto, but I had my Edel Wedges ordered through Golf Evolution up in Erie, PA. I would technically consider them a small independent store

I buy ALOT of cheap (<$100) clubs on eBay.   For big dollar purchases, I always go to the big box stores even if it costs a little more - afraid of counterfeits.

I bought my Cobra Bio Cell driver at Golf Town (a big Canadian golf store) mainly because of the selection they had and how close the store was to me.

My last purchase was from Dick's.  But this will probably stop when my favorite store reopens in 3 weeks. I buy as much from my local Pro shop/driving range as I do from all other sources combined.  I mostly buy used or discontinued stuff from Dick's and GG.  But the bulk of new purchases are from my favorite store.  I like to support the locals.

The Big Box stores have muscled out the independent stores around here.  For instance, there's a small, independent store about a 1/2 mile from my old office, but there's also a Sports Authority, PGA Tour Superstore and GolfSmith within a mile radius.  Overall, I favor Golfsmith.

Mine is kind of a skewed answer since I got most of my clubs straight from the OEM to review. The last club I bought in any form was a Titleist 910h used for ~$50. Last thing over $100 was ... probably a set of Mizuno MP57 irons I got in like 2008, used, from Golfers Warehouse. Not a huge huge chain, but they're owned by a company that owns other golf chains. EDIT: Now I'm thinking they're must be a more recent purchase. Drivers ... no. Not fairway woods or hybrids. Not irons. Not putters. I haven't bought wedges since 2007 or so. My next purchase will probably be Edel wedges and a putter, if that counts. The only club I've ever bought online was a Scotty Cameron Studio Select putter because I had a gift card to TGW, and they didn't really sell those putters in stores nearby. Never bought anything from a pro shop, largely because I've never been a member at a course. I'd love to buy clubs from an independent store, but there aren't really any nearby.

In my bag:

Driver: Titleist TSi3 | 15º 3-Wood: Ping G410 | 17º 2-Hybrid: Ping G410 | 19º 3-Iron: TaylorMade GAPR Lo |4-PW Irons: Nike VR Pro Combo | 54º SW, 60º LW: Titleist Vokey SM8 | Putter: Odyssey Toulon Las Vegas H7

    • To flog this subject even further, if that's even possible, this article from Golf Monthly just appeared today in one of my news feeds. Written by a golf writer in the UK who I never heard of, he's basically saying that there should be only 3-5 rounds from the most recent 20 that should count towards the average and only competitive rounds should count. He claims the erratic scorers would have less of an advantage than they do now. He makes a lot of references to "club golfers" in the UK being the ones who are mostly dissatisfied. https://share.google/qmZZBEoJvOxHxJGil  In my experience with my league where we have golfers with indexes ranging from 5 to 40, looking at the weekly results from the past two years, I can detect no pattern that would substantiate the claim that the current system gives an unfair advantage to either erratic golfers (aren't we all?) or higher handicappers. Apparently though, at least in the UK, this seems to be "a thing."
