In my case, its a great idea.  My wife loves to play, and plays pretty well.  She's also a "golfer", someone who knows most of the basic rules and plays by them, who understands etiquette, and keeps play moving.   She doesn't expect me to help her "fix" her swing, she's a completely independent player when we're out there together.  She's also pretty competitive, so even if we're just playing a casual round, we're still keeping track of a match between the two of us.

I'm torn on this one.  I wish my wife would take an interest in golf, as it would give me the opportunity to spend more time with her and on the course.  But, a lot of times, the course is my refuge.  If work or family is really eating at me, my mind goes completely to golf while playing.  My frame of mind resets and relaxes.  The old saying is true, "A bad day of golf is better than most everything else!"

my lady has no interest in playing but we go out about once a month to an executive course near us and we always enjoy the day. she likes to drive the cart and keep my score. I brought an extra putter along the last time and she tried putting on the practice green, made a 10 footer and got excited. just a brief glimmer of interest maybe. i thought it would be fun when on vacation to sneak a round or two in with the lady. i would have some reservations too about having her as a regular golf partner.

I think the answer to that relies on far too many variables for there to be "an answer".

I golf with my wife and kids some times, and we have fun.  I try and not go onto a busy course with the family.  I get anxious when we play slow and there are groups behind us.  So we go on executive courses or late in the day when it's pretty empty.

I golf and my wife will drive the cart if she wants to come, which is very rare.  I'd like her to play, but she considers golf to be "my thing."  Which is fine.  Maybe I'll get her to golf when we are older.

I play with my wife just about every week... golf that is.  For me it's a great idea.  We get some together time doing something I enjoy.  Much better than going shopping at Macy's (which I would never do).

She enjoys it but isn't serious about it like me.  When it comes to helping her with any golfing tips, I've found it's best to not say anything unless asked.

my wife loves to play.   We play most every weekend.     She doesn't have the time to practice, but she holds her own.    Its great couples time ... plus she's good luck, only 2 times I've broken 80 have been with her.

Have tried it several times and its just not in the cards.  Think it would be great to have a girlfriend or wife who is a good golfer to play with, but mine stinks at it and she is not ever going to try and get better.  We finally agreed she will do her thing (shop) and I will golf.  That is our time away from one another doing what we like best.

My girlfriend and I play a few rounds together each summer. She plays well enough to enjoy it and we have a nice time together. We prep a few mixed drinks to enjoy on the course and play when the course is empty so we can enjoy a leisurely pace. In fact, we have our third round of the season slotted for this Sunday.

I wouldn't mind playing a round or two more with her each year, but I wouldn't want to go beyond that. Golf is my hobby and escape from daily life.

I enjoy golfing with the girls I date (not married) so I guess to each their own... But this does seem kinda stupid to me simply because

Love golf + love GF or wife = super fun?

if you are having a bad time you might want to take a look at yourself or your attitude and see if it needs adjusting.

Watching someone golf is like watching paint drying, especially watching a hack like one of us. Plus it would be my time away... unless my partner was good enough at it to enjoy playing.

And the thread now begins to deliver.

My wife was forced to play Pitch and Putts in Ireland as she grew up. Hated it. Last thing she wants to do is play... Only ever been out on the course with me once- she drove the cart as I played with my Parents on a trip to Myrtle Beach before we were married. If she did want to play, it would not end well if we went out together. Edit--- and anyway, I would get real tired of the "That was a peach, Hon..." jokes all day long.

I've taken my girlfriend out twice now.  She is pretty athletic, but has only played golf 4 or 5 times in her life.  We only have done 9 holes so we keep the interest up, and I let her take plenty of mulligans if no one is behind us.  Basically just trying to ease her into it while having fun.  It doesn't hurt to have alcohol on board, either.

Sundays are our day to play 18 as a couple and have a nice dinner somewhere.  Outdoors, preferably.  I schedule and pay for a tee time after noon each Sunday.  My wife usually buys dinner afterwards.  She's as much fun to play with than any of my guy friends.  If she's not hitting it well, she'll start buying beers on the front nine.  If she's playing well, we'll hold off until the turn.

She's competitive and wants to play and score well, but not to the point where not playing her best affects her attitude or mood.

We have an enjoyable round and a nice dinner out afterwards.  Great spend of a Sunday.  Hopefully, this is something we'll be doing together for a good long time.

Here's a note of caution for you:  I had to sub for my father-in-law with my wife's mom in a couples league after FIL had back surgery.  I subbed for him for 6 straight Friday nights.  He was able to make it to the course and ride with our group during the rounds.  He could NOT keep his mouth shut after any shot that my mother-in-law didn't hit well.  "You were aimed right into the trees, hon."  "You stood up on that one, hon."

After about 6 or 7 comments, my MIL blasts back with, "If you could find a way to FTFU, (my MIL was probably 60 at the time and a truer 'lady' you'd never find) MAYBE I'd be able to hit a better shot!" Lesson learned!
