What'd You Shoot Today?

Recommended Posts

Tried to play today. I'm usually pretty diehard but between 0 and 1C after a frost delay. Wind started blowing and rain sideways on first hole, then turning to wet snow. Bogeyed it but lost feel in my fingers and hit drive way left on 2, followed by another and I knew I couldn't play.  The other 2 guys in my threesome weren't having much fun either, we all quit after the  3rd hole when the green was turning white and the ball kept getting bigger with each roll. Nice that we were the last threesome on the course, turned out everyone ahead of us quit too.  Looking like an unplayable week ahead with some nasty weather.  Indoor practice time, lol

73 from the back tees at Southern Highlands, just under 7300 yards. Really good course, one of my better rounds recently. Three birdies with one dumb three-putt from 15ft.

Nice weekend for me. 73-70 (-1) on my home course.

Long game was on point. Putter was kind of cold on Saturday but get hot on Sunday.

Good rounds to adjust everything for the next week´s Mid Am.

Had a magical day today on and off the Course.

Went thrifting and found a immaculate and complete set of MacGregor, Jack Nicklaus cg1800 clubs. 3-S + 1,3,5 wood ($11) . I also found a Ping O blade (2.99) and a Ping Anwer 5k ($22).

I decided to go test out these clubs on a local short course. 4,932 yards from the whites.

The Macgregors felt so so good. Feel much lighter then my Cleveland TA7 and more comfortable/ forgiving. Had the most GIR I have ever had on this track (11).

Ended up shooting an 83 which is nearly my best round on this course with a $11 set of clubs! Great day! If i could have eliminated all the three putts I would have easily been in the 70's. I felt my self trying to sink birdies and rather then make pars. Once I realized this was the issue I Parred the last two holes just focusing on getting the ball close. I have a feeling the Macgregors will be my primary clubs for a good while.

78 today!  Everyone canceled due to the cold. It was the wind chill. 8-10 mph made it feel like 33!  But I soldiered on. Cart path only, muddy and wet. five over on the front, one over on the back. Had two three putts.

75 in not fun conditions, cold and high wind. 5th straight Friday game low gross 💰 Hit the driver very well, irons were good, putting was mostly better. Missed two short downhill putts but then made several other good ones from 10ft and in.

Most of my bogeys were good/solid shots that landed pin high and went over the green. 7, 11 and 14, all shots at the flag that were solid and went over the green. Tough to get it up and down if you miss a green at Summerlin, especially long. Kind of like Pinehurst, rolls into a collection area and grass is not dormant and grainy.

Despite the high of 45 degrees today, my brother and I decided to play. He hasn’t played in a while, but he wanted to play the whites with me. Neither of us had a great front nine. I played okay except for one hole. Standing in the ninth fairway with a solid chance to walk away with a bird (which would give me a 46), I proceeded to rope-hook my second OB, then slice two straight 5W shots. I normally don’t spray it like that, so I was thinking, “Where on earth is this coming from??”. Ended up taking 9 on the hole for a 51. He shot a 63, which is pretty good for him. On the back, we lost some of the feeling in our hands. It definitely showed. I shot 55 for a 106 🤮. He shot the worst nine holes I’ve ever seen him play. Apart from the par-3 twelfth (he made a 5), he didn’t have anything better than an eight. Final score for him: 80 on the back for a 143 total. I had only one par on the day (a poor approach, at best, on 12, two-putt from ~60 feet).

Long Game: C. Overall good contact apart from the three shots I mentioned above, but hit just under half the fairways. It’s probably alignment.

Mid Game: D. More than a handful of fat shots, which is not normal for me. Most of my mishits are thin. Really poor club selection.

-Short Game: B-. Chipping was actually decent, just not quite getting within 6’. Most of my chips today were probably 10-15 feet from cup.

Putting: B. Exactly 36 today. Definitely not the best it’s been, but had a bunch of two-putts, two three-putts and two one-putts.

Recovery: C-. Did have some good recoveries, but more bad ones, most likely distance control.

WITB:
Woods: Cleveland Launcher (Driver, 17 degree, 22 degree)
Irons: Titleist T200 (4-PW)
Wedges: Callaway Jaws (50/54/60)
Putter: Odyssey White Hot

56....😛Par 3 challenge today at the club. All holes converted to par 3's, mostly playing from rough hitting over trees or teeing off from a tee box and playing the previous green. So teeing off #6 forward tee to #5 green. No birdies, two bogeys, yardage control was terrible. Shortest hole was 60 yards, longest was 173.

77 today, 39/38 on course #2. Cold and windy!  Lots of up and downs! Hit 12 fairways but only 6 greens. Had a sandy par on the par 3 6th. 6 one putts, 29 overall.  Canceled tomorrow as it’s supposed to be 20 degrees at my tee time.  I think I’ll make pancakes in the morning!

92 today at Bonaventure Golf Club.  The place used to be a top draw for western Broward County.  Now it is a run down destination for value golfers like myself.  The course is still interesting with many tiered greens and intrusive water hazards.  But they are not keeping it up.

The long game was working today.  There are four par 5s, and they really are not especially well protected.  My drives were just very good today, so I went for three of them.  Lemme show you what I mean.  The distances you see are as the crow flies. My drawn lines are estimates.

1534101359_Bonaventurehole1.thumb.PNG.e44e3d1f4b69016eba70dd576572156d.PNG

This is the 1st hole.  You can see that the primary protection comes from the large trees I went over. They are towering banyans.  I mean, there is water on both sides, but there is still a lot of room.  Interestingly, the design looks like it has more protection for an iron on the second shot.  Nailed the driver.  Nailed the 3-wood. Impressed the guys I was with until I 3-putted from just off the green. Opportunity squandered.

510466900_Bonaventurehole7.thumb.PNG.7cf05dde042549122cf569cc3d47138a.PNG

This is the 7th.  My drive was not amazing - it got the wrong spin and faded a bit.  Remarkably, this had the effect of shorting the hole as you can see. I was not going to go for this in two, but due to the location I got this chance. My distance on the 3-wood is pretty consistently beyond 230, but I have lateral control issues. In this case it just made sense.  I nutted it again, but another par.  Oh well.

1661890853_Bonaventurehole10.thumb.PNG.8f1f41641800f2f6d4a17f7aa91bcbcf.PNG

Here we have the 10th.  Probably my best drive of the day.  I used the 3H for the second shot.  I was not actually aiming for the green, but rather for that large bunker to the left of it, frightened of the water.  The ball got some side spin and the wind did the rest, making for a long, lucky shot.  Bogey on this one.  Yeah, I know.  That kind of annoyed me, but such is my game.  The flag was on a top tier, and my short chip rolled off it.  Then my 1st putt was for crap, poorly dealing with that same incline. I need to practice those more.

The par 5's were fun.  But I just was not hitting the irons quite right, and I was not putting very well.  I was constantly scrambling, and I do not think I got up and down even once.

Thanks for letting me share this with you.

Well, I'm all over the place now. This past weeks scores:

1/13 - 77, 1/15 - 81, 1/16 - 82, 1/17 - 76, 1/18 - 80

This week temps in the high 30's to low 40's until Thursday, so I'm not playing until then. No reason to freeze when it's back to the 60's - 70's in a few days.

My last 5 rounds have all been pretty good for me. I played 4 different courses the past 12 (?) day. The weather has been cooperating.

Have averaged 81.6, with 29.1 putts for those 5 rounds. The putt number is a false number since some chip shots were required for missed girs. Some of these chips led to one putts. Had 4 chip ins for 0 putts.

Had a few great shots, and nothing really bad. No 6s for those 90 holes. Did have a couple of 5s on the par threes, that's almost as bad as a 6 anywhere else. A couple of birds cancelled those out. Parred/birded all the par 5s. Most of the rest of the holes were par, or bogey 1s.

Just a good few days of playing and/or practicing.

Trying to get in as many rounds as possible before my next eye exam. Might have some down time due to caterac removal. Fingers crossed on that event..

played well yesterday. Didn't hit driver all that well (what's new) but hit irons well and putted pretty good. My sand game was pretty good as well. Shot 46 on the tough back nine of a course I play pretty often. 8.5 differential!

Had a pair of 71s (-1) this weekend on my first two rounds of 2020. Hit the ball well but really struggled on the front both days due to the greens being frozen solid. The two rounds I was combined 5 over on the front and 7 under on the back once the greens thawed. I did get to check off 10 holes on the Birdie Challenge though and picked up my first two eagles of the season.

I feel compelled to post the 75 I shot yesterday (MLK day) because it took 4 hours and 40 minutes to play 18 holes. It is snow bird season here in sunny Florida....Usually I don't play worth a crap when it takes that long to play 18 holes but I was actually one under on the back 9 (which actually took longer to play than the front 9). I will say this...I don't know how anyone can play a round that long and do it more than once every year or so. All we did was sit in the cart. Needless to say...I won't be playing golf on any public golf courses during a holiday for a long time.

    • Yes, this is the 2024 model. DSG ruined what Callaway perfected for most golfers. A darn good 3 piece golf ball. Now it's a 2 piece cheap ball. To me a 2 piece ball is fine and a 3 piece budget ball is better. I prefer a slightly harder ball, something in the 65-75 compression range that will perform similar to the old Gamer. The Titleist tru-feel is pretty good. I planned on giving Maxfli straightfli a try.
