What'd You Shoot Today?

Recommended Posts

Followed up yesterday’s 75 on Pinehurst #1 with another 75 on #6 today.  Stats overall for both rounds were 62 putts (31 each round), hit 18/36 greens and 21/28 fairways.  #1 played at just over 6,000 yards and #6 just under 6,200 yards.

Well I am consistent -  95 today (48 front / 47 back).   Looking back over the round there were no blow up holes, nothing worse than double bogie (which is a first!).  Had some real good looks at birdie and par on a number of holes, just could not sink the putts (actually several were came within a couple of inches of sinking - the greens were super soft due to the heavy rains over the past 24 hrs so that may have made the difference).  What were the thorns?  Lack of consistent ball striking on the 3w, seemed all over the place; putting - accuracy good, pace off - either short or overly long; wedges around the greens - more my failure to commit and giving up, causing the ball to come up short.  What were the roses? Driver was fairly consistent; irons were on - getting good distance; play was the most consistent ever as I stated - no worse than double on any hole (however 7 doubles are 7 too many - next goal, to have no more than one or two per round - i.e. put myself in position to have par or better on holes through better shot selection using course management and optimizing separation values by having confidence in the club selected).....

Played a Texas Shamble today. For those who don’t know is 4 guys tee off and everyone plays home with their own ball from the best drive. I made par from 13-18 but then the beer, jager and heat set in. 10:30 shotgun start finished around 4:30. Way too long of day to be in the heat. Was happy with my play for the first 6. Next 12 not so much!

My brother and I played another new course today called Stoney Creek, near Greensboro. I decided to play the slate tees (par 71, 6647 yards, 72.6/137), and I knew anything in the low 90s would be a pretty good number. The front nine ate us both for breakfast.

I made two pars, three bogeys, two doubles, a triple and a quad, which adds up to 50. But two of those were lost balls off the tee, and playing longer tees, it wasn’t horrible. But my brother, well…let’s just say we had to get a couple of sleeves at the turn.

We agreed that it would be best for him to move up a tee box for the back (blues to whites), and he did a lot better. Didn’t keep his score, but it was probably mid-high 50s, a lot better than his front nine.

I managed to turn my game around on the back side as well. With this side being the par 35 (which included three spectacular par threes), I managed another two pars, four bogeys and three doubles. 45 on the back, 95 total and a 17.7 differential. Not bad at all! Highlight of the round was on the long par-5 15th where I made a brilliant up and down for par from a bunker after not being able to see even the tip of the flag.

Despite the high score, I feel I played well. Wasn’t able to make a putt on the quick greens, but I was pretty good off the tee (10/14 fairways), and my chipping was solid. I don’t think this 95 is gonna impact my handicap a lot, if at all, but I’ll find out in the morning!

Slapped it around for an 86 on Sunday - 12 nGIR/GIR, 30 putts, 2 penalty strokes. The non-nGIR/GIR were really bad, which led to a bunch of sixes.

Full swing just wasn't happening today, but was able to get enough out of my "B" swing to manage the course. I'm fast approaching zero confidence with driver, so teed off with hybrid for the most part, which is my "keep the ball in play off the tee at all costs" club.

Pitched the ball really well today, and I am starting to gain some confidence with 20-50 yard pitch shots.

Putting was also good. Outside of one bad 3-putt, I lagged the ball well, and made some nice putts in the 6-10 foot range (unfortunately they weren't birdie, or even par putts for the most part).

League night. Played like dog shit! I didn’t want to play and was hoping for rain. Didn’t hit us till we were putting out on 9 unfortunately.

Started well enough with a 2 putt par at 1 but quickly fell apart with a double at 2. Bounced back sticking a wedge at 3 but missed the kick in bird there. Missed a kick in par at 4: 3 putt at 5. 6 we miss the green from 100 yards. 7 make bogey from the fringe. Wasted a great drive at 8 leaving my wedge woefully short of the pin at 8 and no hope for birdie. Hammered a drive at 9 and yet again find a way to miss the green from less than 100. I was 7 over. Felt like 27 over!

I'm going to play a tournament today, where everyone plays from the front tees (5250 yards) on my home course, so I put in a round yesterday playing from the fronts.

Played some good golf, a more relaxed and soft swing has done wonders for my driving and my putting was all over the scale.

Hole 1 (450 yards par 5)

290 yards drive down wind to the right rough. OB on the left here, so I allways aim right, and the rough on the right is not too unforgiving. 160 left to the pin with a flyer lie, so I hit my PW. I pulled it 20 yards right and with the flyer lie it carries 190 yards to a ditch behind the green. I managed to get it to the fringe of the green in 2 from there and get up'n'down to save a bogey (6 feet putt). (+1)

Hole 2 (110 yards par 3)

It was down wind and 20 yards downhill, so I decided on a 3/4 56°. Hit it horribly thick and only get it 70 yards down the hill. 40 yards left from the rough. I hit my 60° as good as I can hit it from there, but it's not possible to get any spin or stop it close to the pin from there. I saved par with a 16 feet putt. (+1)

Hole 3 (325 yards par 4)

Uphill and into wind I probably stepped a little to hard on the drive and hit a low slice to the left rough, leaving me with 100 yards left from an ok lie. Pulled the approach a bit and ended up in the rough 15 yards right of the pin in a little slope. Chipped it to 6 feet and saved another par. (+1)

Hole 4 (100 yards par 3)

Into wind to a tricky pin location (back left on topshelf behind a bunker) I decide to hit soft 52° with a slight fade, and hit a great shot. It lands pin high 2,5 feet left of the pin and spins back a few feet, to leave me with 6 feet for birdie, which I sunk. (E)

Hole 5 (330 yards par 4)

Down wind with lots of room left I decide to bomb the driver towards the green. It moves a lot more to the left than my usual fade and I end up almost pin high 60 yards left of the pin on the fairway of hole 6. The only challenge from there is to get over the 25 yard high trees between me and the green. I hit a great shot from there and flopped my 60° clean over the trees and landed it on the back of the green with 45 feet to the hole. Unfortunately I left my lag-putt 5 feet short and I lipped out the putt from there. Bogey (+1)

Hole 6 (305 yards par 4)

This hole has a hazard on the left and OB on the right and is extremely narrow the last 120 yards to the green. Down wind, so I went for a soft 8 iron and ended up in the semirough on the left with 120 yard left to the pin. The AW from there was 5 yards too long and ran just through the green to end up in the rough 2 yards from the fringe. I managed to get up and down for another par (+1)

Hole 7 (170 yards par 4 (plays as a par 3 with a provisional green because of works on the green. It plays 150 yards shorter than usual)

9 iron to just outside the provisional green, a chip and a putt for a "birdie" on the scorecard. (E)

Hole 8 (115 yards par 3)

Uphill and down wind. I played a 3/4 AW and landed it on the green 20 feet short of the pin. Got the speed totally wrong on the uphill putt and hit it 8 feet past the pin. Couldn't sink the return and got a 3-putt bogey. (+1)

Hole 9 (435 yards par 5)

This hole is 25 yards uphill, so it plays longer than it looks on the scorecard. I hit a very good drive here, 250 yards to the middle of the fairway and was left with 185 uphill to the pin. I pulled a 6 iron from there and ended up in short rough 30 yards right of the green. A litte 60° to the fringe and an up'n'down for another par. (+1)

A great score for me, but I feel I could have dropped a shot or two on hole 1 and a couple more if I avoided the 2 3-putts. 7 oneputts on the front is insane though, and makes up for the "lost" shots.

Hole 10 (472 yards par 5)

We're playing through the group in front of us on this hole, so I am very pleased thsat I hit my best drive of the day on this one. 305 yards into wind to the middle of the fairway to open up the dogleg and leave me with 165 yards to the pin. A smooth 8 iron from there to the back of the green (still with spectators) brought some approving nods from the spectators. Nearly sunk the 30 foot eagleputt and had an easy tap in for birdie (E)

Hole 11 (155 yards par 3)

This hole is down by the lake and the winds are a bit stronger here. 25 mph wind from the right on this one. With the water running all the way along the right side I still aimed conservatively one the flag. I hit my PW high and it drift way to far left for me and I ende up in the rough 35 yards left and long. The pitch back from there was a with water catching all thinned and long shots. Got it to the fringe with my 60° and got up'n'down for bogey (+1)

Hole 12 (280 yards par 4)

15 yards uphill with wind from the left. I hit a great drive to the left side of the green and was left with a 50 footer for eagle. Long story short left the green with a bogey......  (+2)

Hole 13 (340 yards par 4)

Back down the hill with wind from the right. Another great hit with the driver (315 yards), but it drifted a bit too much left with the wind and ended up in a small bush on the left. I managed to hack it out of there, get it on the green on the next shot and 2-putt it for a bogey (+3)

Hole 14 (475 yards par 5)

Hit the drive a little low on the face and ended up in the fairwaybunker on the left with 220 yards left to the pin. Hit a soft PW out of there to around 110 yards. Caught the AW a little thin, landed it 2 feet from the pin, but it bounced long and rolled off the back of the green to the rough there. A chip and 2 putts for a bogey (+4)

Hole 15 (80 yards par 3)

Small island green, into wind. I hit a soft 3/4 56° to 12 feet. 2 putts for par. (+4)

Hole 16 (280 par 4)

Dogleg right with the lake on the left and trouble on the right playing into wind. I played a 9 iron, but pulled it into trouble (trees) on the right. Had to hack it back into play and left the 3rd shot 15 yards short. Happy with the up'n'down for bogey (+5)

Hole 17 (280 par 4)

Dogleg left, uphill, down wind. This one is drivable, but the teeshot is blind if you go for the green and the we had a slow group in front of us, so I went with the safe solution. A perfect 7 iron to the right side of the fairway with 95 yards left. Pushed the 3/4 56° degree slightly and ended up in the rough just left of the green. Caught the chip a little thick and needed 2 putts to get it in the hole for bogey. (+6)

Hole 18 (410 yards par 5)

A very short par 5 from the front tee, playing 25 yards uphill and down wind. I hit a good drive to the center of the fairway and was left with 140 yards up the hill. Pulled the PW just a tad, landed on the right fringe and bounced down a small slope to leave me with a 12 yards chip up a 3 yard slope. Caught it a little thick again and needed another 2-putt to secure the par. (+6)

78 shots

Happy with the round and that I avoided the doubles+. 6/13 fairways is ok as long as all the missed fairways are in play. 8/18 greens is ok, and most of the missed greens were not big misses. 31 putts with 2 3-putts and a 4-putt is actually very good.

A good warmup for todays tourney!

I was just getting started on the range and had only hit a few wedges when the pro dropped by. Said he was giving a lesson and happened to look over and see something. He tweaked my hand position and I hit a couple shots. Took it too the course and I was hitting the ball as good as I can remember in any time over the last couple years. Sprayed the driver a little but no trouble. Just off the fairway on one side or the other. Hit 12 greens. Made 3 birdies. 5 bogeys. Shot +2 72 today. Thrilled to have a feeling that golf is fun again. Had been struggling with ball striking lately and sometimes it’s just a simple fix.

I shot 73 today, could’ve shot 63. But you know GOLF. I have NEVER played a round where the 4 major facets all clicked, Driving, Approach, Short Game, Putting. (Not Beer, Wine, Gin and Tonic, and FIREBALL).. the first three were good, IN FACT: I gave myself an A+ on Approach today. 14/18 GIR, 17/18 nGIR, 1 water ball. The driver was pretty good, I hit a couple 251 yard drives that backed up out of their pitch mark. The only birdie I made was a 10 footer for birdie at the par-five 18th. 1 birdie, 1 bogey, 1 double bogey, 15 pars, 37-36=73

Great work man!

Played 9 today at the local course (the back half of the course was closed due to the heavy rains of late).  It was all good as it was with the Missus and our grandson.  I pared down the bag to the D - 3h - 6i - 8i - 50 and putter.  This made it easy to carry her clubs in my bag as well.   Shot 48 as it was one of those days where it was literally hit and miss.  Positives for the day - 8i was the best club of the day, good accuracy and distance control, putting was okay (greens are tough at this course as they vary from relatively smooth to lumpy bumpy) with only one three putt.  Negatives - 3h was inconsistent as well as the 6i.  Still I really enjoyed having to think about where I wanted to the ball to land.  Using the "back of the green" as my target distance, I found the greens more often.  Best part of the day is that the Missus really enjoyed her round and is looking forward to playing again soon and of course our grandson had a blast as well.

I played Croasdaile the other day from the blues (par 72, 6511 yards, 71.9/136). I was +8 through 7, not too bad, but then weather caught me and I had to stop. But an hour later I was able to continue. I rope hooked my drive OB and made a quad, then made a solid bogey on the ninth to make the turn at 49.

I then three putted the short par 5 tenth for bogey and made double from the fringe on the 11th. Then I played the toughest stretch on the course, holes 12-14, in just one over. Six over on the last four holes added up to a 46 on the back, 95 total. I played the last 11 holes in +15 and in about 1:15. Not my best effort for sure, but my handicap didn’t move. I’m playing again later today, so I’ll see if I can get my handicap moving in the right direction!

Shot 84 today, 15 GIR/nGIR, 29 putts, and 2 penalty strokes.

Started 6-6-6 (all par-4 holes). First hole was a good drive, decent nGIR approach, pitch onto green, then 3-putt. Next hole shanked tee shot OB and then went on the make a par (+2) on the second tee ball. Third hole was another nGIR, but duffed a simple chip into a bunker, then onto the green followed by 2-putt. So not a great start, but settled into the round after that.

Had some good flashes with driver today, which is promising since I spent a good portion of last lesson working with this club. 3 of 4 driver off the tee were long and in the fairway, and one bad miss (thin/pull), fortunately on a short par-5 so I was able to recover for par.

Short game was so-so, not bad, but not good enough.

I was getting the read and bead right on my putts, but we were playing behind the crew watering greens, so my speed judgment was poor and left a lot of putts short, including a several birdie putts around 15 feet.

Finished the round with a birdie on #18, which I think is a new one this season.

Every other weekend I play a modified version of match play with a friend of mine.  We play all 18.  Today I lost 8 to 6.  However...we also keep a cart score:  the winning/tying score, each hole, being the cart score for that hole.

Our previous low cart score had been +4.  This morning we managed a +3.

Shot a -3 68 yesterday, first time breaking par from tees that are 6000+ yds.

4 birdies and 1 bogey, 13 GIR and 28 putts.

Finished the back 9 really solid, had 70 yds left after my tee shot on 16, hit the approach shot to 3 feet and made the putt, then had 100 yds left for my 3rd on 17 and hit that one to a foot.

Been working pretty hard lately on my priority piece in my full swing and been practicing a lot of 8-10 foot putts too and my first 2 birdies were both from 9 feet so nice to see the work is starting to pay off

Shot 41 in my past Thursday morning league after leaving 2 birdies out there and making one.

87 Saturday at Bent Tree. Only my third time playing this course. The two previous rounds here were mid 90's. During those rounds, I might as well left my flip flops on as I was on the beach so frequently.

Playing a scramble today at Heritage Golf Club in Hilliard.

Visiting Florida from NY.  Played Indian River Preserve.   Shot a 93,  best of my year so far.  Problems off the tee with driver on most for whatever reason, snap hooks for 175 yards, but stayed in play.   Got 2 birdies, both par 5 (only 2 tee shots with Driver that were good).   Both I was on in 2 with Driver then 3H.  Then Driver 3w on 18th hole, which I lipped out the 15 foot eagle putt for a tap in birdie.    Also had 32 putts which is great for me.  Slowly getting better at putting by getting the speed right
