What'd You Shoot Today?

Played the Deer Run course at Newport News Golf Club. Shot a 112, though two holes accounted for 15 strokes due to an absolute nightmare of a creek that seemed to have a magnet in it distinctly calibrated to draw in my golf balls, running along side the fairway on one hole and across the fairway on the next.

Did have the one of those "shots that keep you playing," moments when I tee'd up on a par 3 over water at 173 yards and dropped my tee shot eight feet from the hole. Thing stopped DEAD after one bounce. The ground was pretty soggy after rain last night, and I am lucky the damn thing didn't plug into the green entirely. :D The next hole I got up and down from the greenside bunker to three feet from the flag. Easiest tap in I've had in years. I could have tossed the clubs in the car after those two holes and called the day a win.

A good time and it gave me a lot of feedback on what I need to work on to get better.

Played for the first time in a year. I birdied the first hole that I played. Truthfully, I did play from the forward green tees set up for seniors - played with my father who although is pretty good, seems to have some distance as he's aging. It was my idea.   Didn't have the best of time playing - not even sure what I scored, most likely an 80 or maybe even broke into 70s.....two birds, few pars, several bogeys......greens were thick and crappy where I played.  Guess they don't cut them on Sundays......

92 49-42 Best round of my short golf career. Strung together 3 pars, 1st ever Birdie, and then another par. Had two bad Triples. Felt great even with it being 99 out. Gotta get all the golf in before this drought kills all the local courses

Shot a 75  @ http://www.bouldercitygolf.com/-course-overview today. Of course I have been playing this course quite a bit lately, so I should be scoring well on it.. Toughest part of this course was figuring out the greens. They are pretty quick........,for me me anyways. Yesterday I played @ http://lasvegas.twoguyswhogolf.com/reviews/cascata.html    Shot an 85, which I have only played three times since it opened. Everything equals out I suppose. Playing some where tomorrow. Just not sure where as yet. Since the move closer to civilization, the golfing opportunities are much better, since there are so many available with in a 1/2 hours drive.

In My Bag:
A whole bunch of Tour Edge golf stuff......

I am dropping the numbers every week. Today I shot a 55 in nine. The past few 9 hole rounds have been below 60. Im getting closer to my goal of breaking 50 in nine. My wife got me a three pack of lessons for my birthday, Im using them to work on my short game.

Sunday,

Kittyhawk GC (Hawk Course), Whites, CR: 70.6, Slope: 125

Dayton, OH

43-51-94

Had a quick, fun front nine. I even had a string of four-straight pars. Went thru one threesome and then found another later on, but they were pretty quick. I was in good tempo and hitting fairly well. Then, I made the turn.

Two guys jumped the 10th tee ahead of the threesome. The trio offered me through and opined that the twosome would surely let me through on 11. Ten minutes later I was finally clear to hit my tee shot. After rushing through a double bogey to be sure I got to them on the 11th tee, I got nothing but a blank stare from the pair. They got in their cart and drove 60 yards to where a worm-burner finally succumbed to grass and gravity. They watched each other hit every shank for the entire nine. Five times I stood next to tee box and was ignored. My temper simply can't handle that.

I don't know how I managed a 51 on the back. I was too angry for rationale thought and probably made mistakes on my score card.

18 yesterday at Prairie Falls GC in Post Falls, ID. Par 70 (67.7/121).  Not a very challenging course with 2 very different 9's.  Front nine is typical Sun City type course with small houses on both sides of the fairway.  Back 9 is more open Prairie with links style holes.

A lot of short Par 4's on the back and I kept my driver in the bag most of the time.  I was 2 under par on the back going into Par 5 18 and since this was my first time playing this course some uncertainty bite me.  18 is an uphill dogleg to the right with OB down the entire right side due to the Driving Range.  All along the left side are houses.  If I was going to play there again I would've hit 3 wood off the tee and played for 3 shots.... instead I hit my drive OB and ended with a double.  Still shot 73 on the Par 70 track

Score: 73 (+3), 3 Birdies, 11 pars, 2 Bogeys and 2 Doubles.

Fairways: 8/13 (61.5%)

GIR:  7/18 (38.9%)  most of the missed greens were on the fringe.  I don't recall having to chip but I had 2 pitches and 1 sand shot.

Putts:  25... mostly due to a lot of tap ins with the first putt on the fringe.

Penalties: 3 ( 1 OB, 1 double tap pitch).

Saturday - 80 on a course I've played a lot - windy - drove a green on the short par 4 with the water short right and long left (tailwind - 300 yards - right on my line intended)

Sun - New course, never played - 84 - converted 1 of 2 fairly easy birdie opportunities.  But really a round of just stupid misses all over the place.

excited about my 3w lately - I lost that shot recently and found it again - every single hit was really nice

AND - I hit several long irons off of tees pretty well - sometimes I have a block on that

starting to give myself more and more birdie opportunities - not converting many, but getting more chances again

happy with my bag set up and tee choices too - both rounds I was able to hit every club in the bag

39 - 39 = 78 @ River Forest, F reeport, PA

Pretty consistent: 11 parts, 7 bogies     8 GIR    6/14 FIR    31 putts

I had all pars on the par 5's (3) and the par 3's (4), but I had 4 pars and 7 bogies on the par 4's.

This was my 4th consecutive 78 from the senior tees @ RF, but I had g ood chances at birdies on the last 3 holes.

I recently lost a 74 on last 20 scores, and the next score to go will be a 76, so after the next GHIN's come out next week, my HI will probably be a full stroke higher.

77 Thurs, 77 Sat, 86 Sun. Good front (39) but played with 2 guys who shot no less than 130 each and having to look for 4 balls on average each hole finally got to me so I faded on the back. Game back in order, however, thanks to my new driver so I'm thrilled.

    • Most of people does it! (but none over the ball) Gave it time.. Hehe...  Funny story... almost a decade ago I started to aim 3..4 fingers away from penalty hazards on long shots. At 270 yards, each finger is around 10 yards sideways (I got to that number experimenting at my home course and using google maps). Been my dispersion around 70/80 yards this almost put the penalty hazard out of play for me. But most importantly I found a way to measure distance sideways on a golf course.  Of course till today everybody ask me what am I doing with my fingers on tee shots, even on approach shots.  Last year, playing a mid-Am I was paired up with a guy with a caddie, the caddie was his friend but also a decent golf PRO. After a couple of holes he asked me what I was doing and he pulled out his phone to show me an app or "system" that can be purchased were it tells you how much a finger is in yards from different distances. Of course if I could figure out how to measure distance sideways in a golf course many people can do the same and make it a trend an even sell it so... you never know! Thanks for the info. The patch is getting worse... more accurate but less intuitive to follow. I rather look funny doing aimpoint on my knee and just use 1 simple formula than using this patch.    I invite you to measure it yourself, don't trust my numbers. Even your arm length, height and finger width are going to change the numbers. Over the 3 footer was clear that my fingers were farther away from the hole standing up than the others. (even with the arm stretch issue i will explain in the next paragraph) Over the 9 footer I agree with you that it should be the longest of the 3 but in practice it wasn't. My best guess is the arm position on each set up. Standing tall the arm is in front of the body aiming a little down, really easy to stretch. Kneeling, because of my spine been tilted forward (20/30°)  the arm is aiming to the front but more up been a little harder to stretch. Laying on the floor the arm is pointing over the shoulders making it even harder to stretch. The less the arm is stretched, the less distance the fingers are from the eyes resulting in bigger results. At this distance it started to matter, but not on shorter ones.
    • So, trying out different feels with pitching. I find feeling my right hand controlling the movement to produce better results.

    • I believe the golf courses are leaving some opportunities on the table to educate and even insist that folks repair ball marks and fill in divots. They can and should put up signs strategically of what is expected. It may not cure the problem completely but it certainly would raise the level of awareness and improve on the status quo. Edit: I think the courses should straight up empty threaten folks that they would be asked to leave if found to be leaving ball marks unrepaired. Seriously.
    • Yeah, that's fair.  I'm not sure what the solution is.  I do remember "back in the day" when the ranger would remind you to fix your ball marks. I don't see that anymore either.  I guess my point is. I grew up in a time when fixing your ball mark was "cool". Because it meant you hit the green and made a ball mark. It's just not cool anymore.... which (in my opinion) is too bad.
