A good driver that costs 10% above what it actually costs to make. Well, actually, ANY golf related equipment that costs 10% above what it actually costs to make.Β

Do you want to include the cost that it took to research it, and to develop the equipment needed to build it, and the rent on the building that houses the equipment, and the cost to package and ship it, and maybe a buck or two for your local retailer, or just the direct cost to manufacture it?Β

That's what the secondary market is for.

And THAT is why it is so hard to find equipment that is marked up only 10%

Β

Even so- The markup at retail is 30-40%.. butΒ on a $400 driver it'sΒ almost 100% markup from wholesale. So I'll go with wholesale being their "bottom" line. And even a company's "bottom line" has a cushion of profit built in to that. So evenΒ AFTER all the research, endorsement, rent, etc... they could make money along the line at a 10% markup on the supply chain.Β

If, for example, TM were to sell the new M1 for $275. How many MORE would they sell at that price than the $450 it is going for (approx). My guess is a LOT more. Ford didn't make money by selling a hundred cars at a million dollars a piece, he made it by selling a MILLION cars at $100 a piece.Β Β

You're missing a big part of that question. It's how many would they sell at $275 IF you could only order online from the manufacturer with no opportunity to demo or get fitted?

My sarcastic answer is time.Β  I've got a 4 year-old and an 18 month-old, and a stay-at-home saint of a wife, so weekends are precious commodities.

My real answer is, well nothing.Β  There are lots of golf items that I want, but nothing that I couldn't get if I had the money and time.Β  For example, my golf "wish list" includes an Edel wedge/putter fitting, custom leather golf bag, a nice pair of old-school black and white saddle shoes, new rangefinder, my favorite style of hat (microfiber, unstructured, close fitting in solid colors with small, centered club logo).Β  I can get any of that stuff now, I just don't feel comfortable blowing a bunch of money on golf stuff.

That wouldn't change- all that has been figured at the supply chain level. Sure, you want a better shaft? pay extra for that. By the time it gets to the retailer it's already had it's profit established for TM, what the retailer might charge for a fitting (if any), different grip orΒ shaft is entirely up to the retailer and what the customer is willing to pay for those options. But- as it stands the guys buying Β $400Β TM's,Β Cobras and Nike's etc, aren't getting a fitting anyway. they may go to the Sports Authority or Golf Galaxy store, grab a demo club, give a few whacks and such and say, "hmmm, feels good" and head to the checkout. They SAY they went and got all set up by the pro... but....

I hope nobody missed the bit of sarcasm in that original statement, but could you IMAGINE if a Company decided to change the price model along the lines of a Model T, instead of say, Bentley.Β

You'd be surprised. There's a price=quality aspect from the consumer's point of view, too. If TMAG starts aggressively discounting their products, people will think thatΒ it's junk or something. You don't want to dilute your brand. It's the same reason some products are exempt from store salesΒ and coupons.

Ford was the only company that offered an automobile at an affordable price point at the time. Different market environment.

Maybe so, but with the same players on the TEAM endorsing it, "brand identity" is still there. the few real d'bags who only buy the "most expensive' of anything will still buy 'the most expensive" regardless of brand.Β

But anyway, it is a bit of idle dreaming anyway. I can't afford a used R11 at the moment, much less a $275 M1 <shrug>

(2) A tracking device that allows oneΒ to always find the ball.

(3) An exoskeleton device that you wear.Β  After a few swings the device learnsΒ your swing faults and gradually begin forcing you into the correct position with each successive swing.

...The list goes on...

I think two and three in your list exist in one form or another. I remember when sharper image was still around they sold a device that would find the golf balls that went with it. I'm sure it was ridiculously expensive. I also think I saw a segment on th golf channel about robotic swing trainers but I could be mistaken

Recognizing that you won a contest? Not a bad idea.

A 24x7 lighted course and driving range in Ohio would be really nice? I know you people in the south have those.

I would like to find a little gizmo that would attach to one of my Clicgear wheels that would measureΒ distances in yards. Not in feet. A friend of mine is working on the idea with patent lawyers and such, but it's aways off. It's easy to do with a device that measures in feet, but you still need to mentally divide the feet traveled to get yards.Β

It's a gimmick to be sure, due to electronic range finders being so readily available. Then again, what the heck, why not. A $12.99Β golf item will be bought byΒ someone.Β

Sometimes I use "Hole19" App and it keeps track of miles walked as well as all the shots and shot statistics. Β It is a free app. Β At least it was when I got it about a couple of years ago.

Or why not just use a pedometer?

A good golf watch. My regular playing partners, good friends all, keep telling me that my current golf watch is to outdated, and is hurting my game. If I could get a better golf watch I could take it to the next level.Β

I wonder if Dan tried that yet?Β

Β

If I can't find a good golf watch, I'd really like more time to play. Equipment is not my problem at this point. Time, and a really good teacher.
