I think Cobra realizes that almost all publicity is good. Just having your brand mentioned in the golf media repeatedly is worth more than the relatively small investment in a set of custom irons.

They had a pretty good model of what Bryson wanted in the Edels he was using. I think they could easily have scanned those, made cosmetic changes, tested and had protos in production since they signed him.

I've been wondering how many more chances he has...

Quote

The Travelers marks DeChambeau's 12th start on the PGA Tour this season. By rule, non-tour members are allowed just 12 appearances per year. Theoretically, DeChambeau -- if he musters a comeback Friday and somehow finishes second or third in the tournament -- could earn Special Temporary Membership, which could bestow invitations to the John Deere Classic and Wyndham Championship. That route is highly unlikely.

DeChambeau, according to a tour official, could play in the John Deere and Wyndham through Monday qualifiers, as that would not count towards the 12 appearances. Because of FedEx Cup points accumulated, he will also be entered into the Web.com Tour Finals, which is a series of four events. The Web.com Tour Finals awards tour cards to the top-25 finishers that haven't earned their cards from the circuit's regular season money list. This offers the best platform for DeChambeau to gain entry to the PGA Tour.

No one can say the PGA Tour does not offer plenty of chances to get a tour card.

Well - there was this one little thing where he talked a lot about how great he is (to be fair, it wasn't all him) and got like a million sponsors exemptions and then  .  . nothing.  All we have now is a hat in a box.

I think what he meant was, what prompted @colin007 to make that post at that time.  The thread has been dormant and as far as I know, there has been no news on or off the golf course from Bryson recently.

I think that maybe Bryson DeC underestimated how good the players are on the PGA.  The golfers on the  Web.com are also great.  You gotta have an A game at the pro level every week.  I have not bought into the same shaft length on every iron.  Just doesn't sound like a good plan for distance control to me, but hey, I'm a double digit handicapper.

He played very well at The Masters and that may have inflated his expectations beyond what is reasonable.  He's one of many new golfers on the Tour that have flashed moments of greatness and then struggled to duplicate the results.

Looks like Bryson is playing on the European tour this week at crans Montana.  Some very entertaining videos from mark crossfield who is there all week.

I haven't posted anything because there's nothing positive to post and I don't want to be one of "those guys" who finds and posts the negatives.  I believe, though, that The Hat was qualifed for the web.com finals, which I thought was last week but he's not listed on the leaderboard.  To make up for not getting his card, I read somewhere that he still managed to eke a living and earn about $500K this year.

As @ZappyAd points out, he jumped the pond (much like his hat jumped the fashion shark) and is playing over there this week.

Gee whiz, I'd hate to have to "eke a living" by earning 500k in a year, or more accurately half a year.

He made $477K in winnings. How much are his expenses though? I'd guess cut that in half. He's earning more from his endorsements, amount undisclosed.

Still, 238k net income for playing golf for half a year? Yeah I think most people would be more than happy with that.

No doubt. Cut that in half after taxes though. But he (I'm guessing) and many others expected him to already have status by now. I'm guessing his endorsements probably total somewhere in the seven figures, money's not the issue right now he needs to play well.

Nah, you wouldn't cut that in half again because those expenses are write offs. I think 270-300k net income is probably pretty close to accurate. Travel, lodging, food, etc are all "business expenses" while he's competing. I see what you mean though, what he's made compared to what some others expected him to have made. It's always hard for me to look at that kind of money and think of it as "only" or "just". Heck, give me 80-90k profit for playing golf full time and I'd be ridiculously happy :-P It's all relative I guess.

A lot of golfers live down here in FL. I'm loving the change to my net pay without the state, local, and school district income taxes that I had to pay in Ohio. There are definitely expenses that he has to pay out of those winnings too. I tend to think of it as a business. Although a small business may make $500K per year, that doesn't translate to what goes into the owners pocket.

I realize it's off-topic but you don't even pay school tax in Florida!?  How the hell does anything function down there!?

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
