I expect more out of both of them.

Rory's US Open record isn't great, particularly on fast tracks. When I threw some money down, I didn't even consider him. That being said, the fact this was a soft track played into his strength and he didn't take advantage of it. As far as Rickie goes, I used to always put money on him in majors and I've learned my lesson. It's like throwing money down the toilet. Most times I throw it down the toilet after the first day.

to be a top level athelete you need to have a significant lack of self-awareness. You have to truly believe against all odds that you are better than everyone else. There is a level of delusion to it and you have to completely believe in it. To your point Fowler seems like the kind of guy who has a lot of self-awareness and is like a normal human being with the requisite doubts and realistic outlook.

Radio Lab did an episode about this.  http://www.radiolab.org/story/91618-lying-to-ourselves/

Athletes who lied to themselves performed better than those that didn't.

So far the leaderboard looks like that of the Humana Challenge, not a US Open.

By the way, whatever happened to Hunter Mahan?

38th in the world after the US Open last year. Looks like quite a fall to 147th. I saw an interview that he feels his game is good, but that he's just not "hitting the shots he needs to" or something like that. He said he's feeling the pressure now each week, whereas until now, he hasn't had to deal with a lot of hardship on the course.

I've been looking for the round 2 schedule and can't find it, maybe they're waiting until this wave is fully underway?

I'm guessing the wave today will play 36, the afternoon wave today will go out in the morning and they'll make the cut around noon then start round 3?

Can anyone confirm this?  Will any of the afternoon wave start today?

Ever heard of Google?  JK ;)

Looks like they're confident that they can  at least get today's afternoon wake started today and be all caught up come Sunday.

This actually makes it even better for us working folk because less golf on Thursday means more on Saturday morning that I wasn't otherwise going to see. :)

I don't know how he can say his game feels good with that trainwreck of finishes. Not that I feel sorry for him. I'm not a Hunter Mahan fan, but the guy seemed like he had a lot of game and was moving in the right direction.

Awesome, thanks.  Looks like my assumptions were correct.  Dunno why that info wasn't in the app, I just figured it hadn't been determined.  Google is my friend, even though they are in Obama's pocket.  Wait, did I type that or just think it?

Adam Scott, JD and smooth Oosty are out. Scott's looking good. Maybe Steve Williams will win another major.. :-)

EDIT: Just missed a birdie on the easiest hole on the course..

That was cool- Day's caddie came over and cleaned Scott's ball for him after he putted from the fringe after his long bunker shot. Polished right up for a tap-in. Good sportsmanship, it looked like.

Henrik Stenson made a steeper fall a few years ago, only to come back stronger than he had ever been.

Perhaps Hunter has been under the impression he could fix his game with tools provided by Ace Hardware...

Balls are grabbing the greens pretty good even from 2nd cut lies. Not sure how hard to adjust since they prepped for a lot more roll all week...

Here is one of the greens measured my Mark Long who makes yardage books for the PGA Tour players. Here is the 16th green. That is a pretty severe green.

They are pretty cool - they've been showing them quite a lot on fox - more at his website http://longyardage.com/ including a video on YouTube about how he does them

I've been watching coverage on the iPad app which has been great but the feed seems to have gone down now :pound::-O

Didn't @krupa and @xcott above mention these guys needed a level of delusion to persevere? :-)

interesting to see them playing "out of turn", Matsy was closest to the hole but off the green, he hit first before the other two who were away.

    • Never practiced golf when I was young and the only lesson ever taken was a driver lesson. I feel like I'm improving every year. However, the numbers don't support my feeling about improving. I usually drop to 12-13 during the summer while playing the familiar courses around home and then go on golf trips in the fall to new courses and increase to end the year between 15-17. Been a similar story for a number of years now but hey, it's the best thing there is in life so not too bothered but reaching 9.9 is the objective every year. Maybe a few lessons and practice could help me achieve it since I pretty much have no idea what I'm doing, just playing and never practice.
    • I am semi-loyal. Usually buy four dozen of one ball and only play that until out and then determine whether to continue or try another one. Since starting my semi-loyal path to success, I've been playing the below, not in order: ProV1 ProV1x ProV1x left dash AVX Bridgestone BXS Srixon Z-star XV I am not sure if it has helped anything, but it gives a bit of confidence knowing that it at least is not the ball (while using the same one) that gives different results so one thing less to mind about I guess. On the level that I am, not sure whether it makes much difference but will continue since I have to play something so might as well go with the same ball for a number of rounds. Edit: favorite is probably the BXS followed by ProV1/Srixon Z-star XV. Haven't got any numbers to back it up but just by feel.
    • Will not do it by myself, going to the pro shop I usually use after Cristmas for input and actually doing the changes, if any, but wanted to get some thoughts on whether this was worthwhile out of curiosity.
    • In terms of ball striking, not really. Ball striking being how good you are at hitting the center of the clubface with the swing path you want and the loft you want to present at impact.  In terms of getting better launch conditions for the current swing you have, it is debatable.  It depends on how you swing and what your current launch conditions are at. These are fine tuning mechanisms not significant changes. They might not even be the correct fine tuning you need. I would go spend the $100 to $150 dollars in getting a club fitting over potentially wasting money on changes that ChatGPT gave you.  New grips are important. Yes, it can affect swing weight, but it is personal preference. Swing weight is just one component.  Overall weight effects the feel. The type of golf shaft effects the feel of the club in the swing. Swing weight effects the feel. You can add so much extra weight to get the swing weight correct and it will feel completely different because the total weight went up. Imagine swinging a 5lb stick versus a 15lb stick. They could be balanced the same (swing weight), but one will take substantially more effort to move.  I would almost say swing weight is an old school way of fitting clubs. Now, with launch monitors, you could just fit the golfer. You could have two golfers with the same swing speed that want completely different swing weight. It is just personal preference. You can only tell that by swinging a golf club.
    • Thanks for the comments. I fully understand that these changes won't make any big difference compared to getting a flawless swing but looking to give myself the best chance of success at where I am and hopefully lessons will improve the swing along the way. Can these changes make minor improvements to ball striking and misses then that's fine. From what I understood about changing the grips, which is to avoid them slipping in warm and humid conditions, is that it will affect the swing weight since midsize are heavier than regular and so therefore adding weight to the club head would be required to avoid a change of feel in the club compared to before?
