Beating Ko in a playoff is even more impressive!

Quote

SAMMAMISH – Patience paid off for Brooke Henderson.
With nine consecutive worldwide top-10’s to start 2016, the 18-year-old continued to remind herself that her time would come. The moment arrived on Sunday at Sahalee Country Club where the Canadian captured her first major title at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship and became the youngest winner in the event’s history.
“Yeah that’s amazing, as well, to think about all of the incredible players that have come before me,” Henderson told the media. “And even I was reading some of the names on this trophy and it’s very, very cool.”
Henderson entered the final round two-back of 54-hole leader Lydia Ko, who was on cruise control throughout much of the day and extended her lead to as many as three strokes on Sunday. But Henderson caught fire on the back nine, draining a putt from long range off the front of the green at the par 5, 11th hole for eagle to pull within one-stroke of Ko. The momentum had officially shifted.
“When that putt went in on No.11 for eagle, that was kind of like the huge jump forward, huge momentum changer. And then things just went pretty well. A good save on 14 out of the bunker. And then good putts on 17 and 18 to kind of finish it.”
Another huge birdie putt at the par 3, 17th hole pulled Henderson even with Ko with just one hole to play. She managed to get up and down from the rough after a wayward tee shot at the last. Henderson carded the low round of the championship on Sunday with a bogey-free, six-under par, 65 to tie Ko and force a playoff.
The two returned to the 18th tee for the first hole of sudden death and both found the fairway off the tee. Ko hit her approach to 20 feet and Henderson responded confidently, stuffing her approach to three feet for birdie and the win with her fellow Canadians cheering her along.

I watched it yesterday/last night.  I thought it was a good show.   Good golf, compelling drama.

Brooke Henderson is a really cute girl.  I know that comment doesn't have anything to do with golf, but there, I said it.

I believe the top 3 finishers were 18, 19, and 20 years old.  The LPGA has a bright future.

Brooke was making amazing putts. Stupid recording ended early so I missed Ko's birdie putt and 18th hole. Ko was a machine. Brooke played great, she deserved to win.

Watched it yesterday - Brooke played well and putted well, the putter saved her; it did not save Ko. Her stroke appeared odd on the back nine and it cost her. Critical birdie miss on a short attempt on 16 said it all. Odd stroke - short going back, and then accelerating. I don't remember that stroke in her previous tournaments.

I thought Brooke's long swing and quick tempo would cost her with the irons, but she controlled it coming in. She hits driver like no one else on that tour.

Brooke has a great game to go with the smile. And she gave a car to her sister for the hole in one. Karma.

Pish posh, there's no such thing as karma. Brooke just plain won the event. She had more shots that statistically are unlikely occur during this tournament, but she did hit the ball to those locations. Gawd if I could putt like that half the time....

A vid I took of her in 2013 at USWO, Sebonack. First time I saw her, thought, that's... a cool looking swing. Definitely a draw flight, medium high trajectory.

48" driver! (At least that's what they said this weekend--don't know what she played in 2013.)

No, no, no! Did you not see Ko putt? :-OKarma, baby, Pro-Brooke karma caused Ko to putt so that the lines on her ball resembled the amblings of a drunken sailor. :-D

Happy for Brooke, and she definitely went out and earned it with her putts on 16, 18 and in the playoff ... but yeah, on 17, Ko had something like a 6 footer straight uphill for birdie and she missed the hole.  That tournament was hers.

I am joking a bit. Brooke went out and took the tournament. Ko faltered with the putter and Brooke was otherwordly clutch with putts in a few situations on the back that saved her round. Kept on thinking if that long swing of hers gets to the irons and Brooke gets any quicker with tempo, something putrid would result. But it did not occur - she controlled it. Congrats!

Yes, congrats to Brooke. That was amazingly high quality of golf down the stretch run by all 3 of the top finishers. Nobody seemed nervous at the end, a rarity in majors.

  • 2 weeks later...

And she's in the lead again this week.

I think she's cute, great smile.

Do I see a Daniel Berger type swing? The way she drops it and lays the shaft down?
