Why are Korean Women Golfers Dominating?

I'm watching the Evian and I think 5 of the top 10 are Koreans. Any ideas why Korean is so strong today in women's golf?

In part, it's a numbers game. A lot of Korean women play golf. And they are dedicated and practice a bunch.

I've never been to Korea. Wonder how it compares on price and tee time availability to other countries.

I have clients in Korea and other Asian countries. Sometimes I have to entertain them with a round of golf. 

Green fees are very expensive and tee times are hard to get unless you have s membership. Typical green fees are $250-400 range. There are very few public courses as most are private or semi-private.

That's a surprise.

So all these Korean women come from wealthy families?

Probably a lot of them.

Of course, the Americans on the PGA Tour reflect a wealthier demographic than the country as a whole. 

I'd be curious to see real data on this, actually.

Thailand gets a lot of Koreans(men and women) especially in high season(Dec-Feb). It's the only time they get to play as they can't afford it back home,they're on the driving ranges 9 months of the year.

Slowest players on the planet.

I always thought the Asian ladies were more serious about their games which leads to better focus. They put more into their games to get more out of them.

As I understand it, women's golf is a big deal in South Korea, so it leads me to believe that playing professional golf is something more little girls aspire to do over there.

I have never been paired with any Korean players who I would consider slow. Most are exceptionally courteous and conscious of proper golf etiquette. But I guess it's just easier to stereotype an entire group of people.

Yeah, I've heard this stereotype about "Asian" golfers (which is in itself ridiculous, since it groups several cultures and countries), but never noticed it myself.

Actually, I can't think of a group of golfers who I haven't heard stereotyped as slow: Asian golfers; European golfers; old golfers; young golfers; high-handicappers; low-handicappers...

I have seen this trend since Se Ri Pak started winning on the LPGA Tour many years ago. It took a while but I believe that the work ethic of these Korean women is outstanding. One other thing is our women have many avenues in sport to play and I am not sure if Korea has the same situation. Perhaps we have become too diversified and have diluted our pool of top golfers. Or not, who knows? Just a thought.

Well if those Korean women read The Sand Trap  like they should they'd know all that range work doesn't translate to the course. They should move to San Diego for 6 months of the year where golf is cheap.

Sure you can. The group in front of you will always be slow when you are playing great! Then you will get mad and play poorly!

Your experience doesn't parallel my own. I've seen slow and fast golfers of all ages, nationalities, etc.

A guy i play with casually is from South Korea and he mentions that a big reason SK women dominate golf is just sheer numbers. So many of them play over there and they are more dedicated to the sport than western players are. They're put in camps and schools if they show any talent for it at all and its pretty much all they do until adulthood. The drawback to this is that most SK players are burnt out before they're 25.
