sounds like throwing the wedge into the trap was good luck

Hope your ball wasn't still in the trap when you did this...

Nah. In the approach 7 feet from the green. ... Not that it mattered, wasn't a scoring round anyway.

This year I bought a new rangerfinder.  The first week I hit a very good drive and was left a short shot to the pin which was tucked in the back.   I grabbed the rangefinder, got a reading of 129 yards.   I grabbed my 129 yard club and hit a great shot.   It looked great....it flew the green!  Since this was a practice round, I dropped another and again hit a great shot.   It was high, soft and I thought it was right at the pin.....it flew the green.

I decided to check the range finder again and sure enough, I was reading the trees behind the ball and the distance to the pin was 86 degrees!    I learned my lesson!

I did this with my 6 iron, which was supposed to be a 9. I don't even know how I did it, they are not even close to the same club. That is the epitome of an unforced error...

I did this on an approach on a par 5.  I pured the 6 right at the flag only to watch it keep flying till it landed in the trees behind the green out of bounds.  I was baffled for about 2 seconds until I saw that my 9 was not actually a 9.  Luckily it was just a practice round so I dropped another ball and and actually played my 9 iron without feeling too guilty about it.

What is your best "wasted" shot. In practice or didn't count for some reason?

How about this? An excellent recovery iron  shot - only aimed at the wrong flag? I've played a few courses that will disorient you if you end up in the woods.

Haha, I did that once. I was in the fairway on a hole at a foreign course, shot the flag with my range finder, and hit an 8 iron to within 10 feet. When I got to the green I didn't see my ball, I was talking to my playing partners while walking up there and didn't realize that we hadn't walked as far as I hit. I look over past the hole and my ball is on the other green. Ordinarily I would have been embarrassed that I did this but there was two of us that did it. I played the course another time and noticed that the green for that hole is difficult to see from the right side and the adjacent green is close and inline.

It really was a wasted shot for the round. One minute I thought I was putting for birdie, the next I'm chipping and putting in for a bogey.

I am curious if anyone has ever shot or saw someone hit a hole in one after hitting a poor first shot.

We have a short island green. If the ball rolls off the back you have a 50/50 chance the rough will stop it before it gets wet. So guys hit a provisional. While I have not seen it, there are about stories about guys holing the provisional only to find the first, Could be urban legend......

I think in my case I pretended it never happened and hit another ball. No way was I going to walk up to the wrong green and say - oh excuse me......

Kinda of tough when two of us did it. No one was on the other green, and if there was I probably would have figured out not to hit there. I just dropped and pitched up to the correct green.

Just for fun I laid it out. The 8th flag was tucked back to the left and difficult to see but I don't think I was looking that way.

I like what you did with Google maps. How did you annotate it?

Happened a few days ago.  From the back tee on the par 5, 18th hole (577 yds) of Turtle Bay (Arnold Palmer course), I hit a fantastic drive straight down the pike.  When I got to the ball, it went through the fairway into the rough and I had only 185 yds left.  Took a 6 iron and hit is slightly fat and came up short into a pond in front of the green.  Ugh!  What a waste of a great drive.

Power lines... My old home course near Chicago has power lines that run across the hole near the tee.  Striped a drive only to here a twang, and goodbye golf ball.  It happened to me several times on that hole.

was playing in a small scramble with co-workers.  I rarely drink on the golf course, never to excess, except this time.  Ironically, if we weren't driving, I never would have made it.  anyways, we're on our last hole, about 205 out and I am swaying behind a 5 iron that I somehow manage to reach back and hit the highest, longest, most beautiful draw i have ever seen.  landed and rolled to within a foot of the cup.  best shot I have ever hit.  (and someone else had to drive me home)

One time I was playing a hole that's 323 yards from tee to green, very downhill, and it was playing pretty significantly downwind. I pured it and cleared the green by a good 50 yards (not exaggerating; it was very windy). If only it wasn't so windy I could have been right up there by the green.

I probably miss a couple easy birdie putts a round, so not a whole lot stand out.

I arrive to where my drive should be across a swampy cross hazard. "Titleist" is there and I lay it up short of the next cross hazard. Oops, in looking closer it is not MY Titleist, just a stray.  Back to where the ball should be. It is in the hazard. Over to the drop area and hit my 5th short of the cross hazard.  I have 170 to the middle of the green. Hit a utility club on the green and watch it roll across the green and into the hole for a 6.

Holing out from 170 should be an eagle or at least a birdie. Mine is for a double. Sigh.

Last week I was at Tecolote Canyon on the 18th hole.  After hitting my tee shot I came across a range ball a bit in front of the tee box. Since the range ball belonged on the chipping practice area/green, I pulled out my 9 iron and hit it towards the practice green about 120 yards away.  Two bounces followed by a clang and it went into the practice green hole (the only hole on the chipping green) for a "hole in one".  And, I've never had an actual hole in one.
