I thought the split would be more even between the definition of perfect between Experience vs Performance.  I was wrong.  Most everybody else is keying in to experience.

that's interesting - I must be some sort of social deviant....  ; )

I guess I don't expect to play a perfect round. Even when I shot my lowest score.

if you saw my criteria.......VERY difficult (nigh impossible) to play perfect......that's why it's perfect.  I'm just wondering what people would define "perfect" as.

Neat answers, not what I expected.  I'm glad I didn't over constrain it to just what I thought it meant.

Hard to choose.  I really like the peace and solitude of being the first out on a solo round at an executive course I play..  On the other hand, I enjoy the competition and ribbing when playing Wolf with my regular group on Saturdays... especially when I win.

Making clean contact on every shot, no penalties on full swings, every approach is a GIR or nGIR. For chips and pitches, I hit the landing spot I'm trying for and with the intended speed. For putting, my read and speed are close enough on long putts that I either sink some and leave the rest within 3'. I make all of my short putts.

Most importantly, I am enjoying the good golf I'm playing and the company of those in my group.

My score is in the low 80's.

1. I'm playing golf when I should be at work.

2. Good company whether it's friends or someone I just met.

3. I am playing decent (not a train wreck).

4. There is some sort of competition. Casual rounds are fun, but a tournament of some sort just makes it a LOT better.

Any of those would make me happy, but a combo of 3 would be close to perfect. All 4... eureka.

While experience driven, I have to say that a GREAT round of golf has to involve a score in the mid 70s for me and all my partners shooting somewhere at least in their 80th percentile game whatever their levels are. I really enjoy it when there's high fiving all around.

Now, what would elevate it from GREAT to PERFECT is if I beat them all too..

Ha! That's great.

If you convince me to play you from the back tees on a windy day you'll have half of the equation.

I'd agree that perfection is unattainable, but I think that it can be almost attainable.  I'll define my "perfect" round like this:

  • No bogeys.
  • No stupid missed putts (inside 4 or 5 ish feet).
  • All shots struck somewhat solidly.
  • During a competitive round on a nice course.

If I ever attain that "perfect" round or start to get close often, then I'll redefine it. :)

I was just referencing the wisdom of Roy McAvoy.

If I'm involved with wind and back tees, I think we're going to double the same half and skip the 59.

P.S. - Just noticed. We got the same H.I.

Are we going to have a "cage match"?  Neutral course somewhere in windy North Dakota.

IDK, but if it were possible, perhaps the number 54 would be about as close to perfection as one could get for 18 holes.

For me, anytime I score below my goal number of 80 is as close to (my own) perfection as I am going to get. Those are very good, consistent rounds for me.

I got courios and looked up the lowest,  recorded 18the hole round. Apparently some guy in Australia had 55 on a 6600 yard course. So I guess if someone can shoot a 55, then a 54 is doable.

I think an 18 under par (e.g. 1 birdie per hole) would be the textbook definition, eagle possibilities notwithstanding...

As for the domain of what's reasonably perfect, I'll go with @Rainmaker and @DaveP043's definition. Works for me!

So "perfect" for you is scored based.

I scored 18 under on my Wii - does that count?

and for each 3 group hole = -4 (birdie birdie eagle) separately

How about Oklahoma in mid-August?

I've never defined the parameters of a "perfect" round very specifically. Obviously decent play by all concerned is a factor. It doesn't even have to be better than average for me, just as long as it's not worse!

Someone mentioned pace of play. Good thought, since I like to keep things moving. I don't enjoy running up the ass of the group in front and having to stand around, and I don't like having the group behind running up ours! And pray to God that one of my group isn't a tortoise. To me, nothing is more aggravating.

Someone else mentioned having a little something on the game. You know what I really like much more than a runaway by either side? A tight match that comes down to the last hole, maybe even the last putt, to decide things! Even if it's just for a beer after the round.

Now that's fun!

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
