Thanks @iacas.  I'm excited and honored to be part of the Newport Cup once again.  Looking forward to playing later this year.  Hopefully I can bring some of that home-state advantage to the East team.  It should be a great time!  I'll have to make sure I keep my game sharp for the length of the season.

  • Wishes that the Newport Cup was in Spain this year.
  • Will perhaps fund the Newport Cup's trip to Spain in 2019…

Yes, yes...Not sure I'd be able to fund other's trip but I'd be a more than willing participant.  Will be over there in a month's time for work.   Can't wait to indulge in the tapas and red wine once more.  :-)

Thanks @mvmac for the selection, and congrats to @NCGolfer on his selection! I see what @iacas is trying to do there, trying to intimidate us with those accomplishments!  Well it won't work on us! ;-)

I'm looking forward to meeting everyone, playing some east coast golf, and taking the Cup to the west coast!

I'd guess that the average age of our team as it stands is probably around 20 years less than the average age of the East team.  Is that what you mean by our "lack of experience?" :-P

I'd say this gap just widened. :-D

The good news is I'd guess that the average drive for the red team as it stands is probably around 20 yards longer than the blue team though, so we've at least got that going our way.

This one too!

Hmmmm...I'm hoping not to give up too many yards to the younger folks.

First gauntlet thrown.  ;-)

The Fourth Selection for the 2017 Newport Cup, West Coast (Red) Team is…

@mchepp

Red Team

Michael is a TST staffer, long time member and lives in the Pacific Northwest. He's has been playing golf for close to 20 years and he's currently a 5 handicap.

Michael has contributed some great content for the site with his reviews, blogs and TST staff predictions articles. He was on the previous Newport Cup and I was very impressed with his clutch play. His consistency and sweet swing are going to be a huge asset to the team.

@iacas and I will be making our next selection on June 30th. So to everyone else, please keep posting your submissions. You don't want to miss a chance at playing in this great event!

If you're interested in being a candidate for the Red Team, let me know ASAP! Until the last team member is chosen, it's not too late to get picked.

I'm going to change things up a bit today, partly because I don't know a ton of intimate details about the person's next selection, but also just to keep y'all on your toes. :-)

The fourth member of the East (Blue) team…

  • Joined TST in 2013, 1350 days ago.
  • Has 2461 posts in that time.
  • (That's 1.82 posts per day, roughly.)
  • Has horrible taste in sports teams. I may not have chosen him, but his hockey team obliged - as they almost always do - earlier this year.
  • Met me (and I met him) for the first time only a few weeks ago.
  • Has what I must assume is better taste in cigars than sports teams, but who will refrain during the Newport Cup. Until the celebratory cigar, of course. ;-)
  • Was born in 1964.
  • Has carried a mid-single-digit handicap about as long as I've known him on the site.
  • Has a GAME GOLF profile, but no rounds posted to it.
  • May be able to carpool with @DaveP043 to get to the Pinehurst area.
  • Doesn't hinge or cock his wrists much during his backswing…

Anyway, without further ado…

The fourth member of the blue team is…

@jsgolfer (Gerald Scott, "Gerry" or "Jerry")!!!

Welcome to the team!!!

If you're on the eastern side of the U.S., have a handicap index at or below 9.0 (or will by August), and would like to be considered for the East Team, please let me know ASAP! It's never too late until we choose the sixth member of the team!

    • Welcome to TST! Once you've played golf you'll always come back to it regardless of the length of the gap or age. Enjoy the journey!
    • Admirable!   Me--No matter where I bring my hands on the backswing, it's the downswing and impact speed that determine how far I flight a ball.  I might bring the back to shoulder, then my brain computes the distance and decelerates the club. On short shots, just the opposite.  Maybe tempo is my problem, but I do okay trusting my brain to the throw the club.  Too much technique and thinking really mess me up in the longrun.
    • Shot 89 today. Drove the ball very well, lost four balls on approach shots. Two were with a wedge in my hands inside 100 yards.
    • I wouldn’t. I like to see one number on the top as I quickly pull it out of my bag to play my next shot. If you want to know the loft of your club, say for gapping purposes, then look it up. Knowing the static loft of your club is not going to help you on the course, and does nothing but force me to look at two digits instead of one to determine which club I’m pulling out of the bag.
