So that makes it last 7 majors, 7 different winners?

Looking forward toΒ the 8th! British open is my favorite! Not the lush green carpet that the other majors are setup on.Β

Exactly. I was looking at some of the distances - 510 yards par 4?!? I mean I can reach that with two PERFECT shots (driver and 3 wood), but the odds of me making 2 perfect shots are near to none and these guys were hitting irons for their second shots...

Driver/7 iron or go home Nancy boy.Β

I see that as a healthy thing (especially when extending those 7 winners back to other, recent majors to include Rory, Jason, Jordan, and so on). I like the modern era of major championship winners. The only anomaly in there, in my opinion, is Danny Willett, whom I cheered at the time but whom I now see as Ian Baker Finch for the 2010s. Any of the others could win again.

If you look back at major championship generations of the recent past, well, there was a long period when the question was, "Who comes second to Tiger?", interspersed with occasional Phil, Ernie, Payne, and Vijay victories. Before that, it seemed like Nick Faldo grinding down Norman, Price, et al. I was too young to really remember Seve in his prime, alas, and Jack and Tom (to my generation) are names from recent history - other than 1986, I never saw Jack contend in a major. But there's an awful lot to be excited about with this young crop of players.

The TV ratings say otherwise:

Those same 4 kids attempted to grab Jordan Spieth after he was nice enough to tell the driver of his escort cart to stop so he could take a picture with them. They were extremely drunk and did not care at all about anyone else in attendance. They got what was coming to them.Β

Β

The event was awesome. I loved working security, and I got to meet most of the players. Though, not all of them are nice. BUBBA IM LOOKING AT YOU.

That is great info - THANKS

Well, that's always the unfathomable bit for me. We seem to have forgotten about the propensity of time and tide to wait for no man. From the article you quoted:

Quote

No Tiger. No Phil.

Why are the fortunes of golf now indelibly tied to a man whom I remember being the lowest scoring amateur at the Masters in 1991, and who is eligible for the Champions' Tour 3 years from now, or another man, in his early 40s, who won everything there is to win, but now, alas, has a broken body and other problems to confront? It's as though we want to live in the past.

No Dustin, no Jason, no Rory. And apparently, no viewers.

A young, American golfer who has been looking like he might break through into the higher echelons for quite a while now, did just that on Sunday. I don't know why US viewers can't excited about that, or need Phil there to make them tune in.

It honestly seemed more like the PGA than the Open. I enjoyed the course though and wonder how it would of played dried out.Β

Yeah, me too. It sucked because it rained basically every night so we never got to see it in true US Open style conditions.Β

Brooks looked great. Most people in attendance didn't even know who he was until he broke away on sunday.

Koepka said he never hit more than 7 iron into a par 4 or 3.

He also averaged a driving distance of around 350 yards.

And prior to the tournament some people were saying the course was too long! The distances some of these guys are launching the ball these days is unreal!

Very, very true. We didn't get to see the "real" Erin Hills.

Oh, I knew who he was. A few years back we went to a practice round at the WGC Bridgestone in Akron, and both Koepka and DJ were there. They're buds and were going out to play so we followed them. Good God Almighty! The distances they hit the ball were mind boggling! They teed off with irons on par 4's where I'd need my Sunday best drive and long hybrid to even have a chance of reaching!

Koepka is built like an NFL safety! Both he and DJ looked like, if a fight broke out, they could clean house pretty good!

I didn't watch more than ten minutes. Β IMO wide fairways are not what a US Open is supposed to be. Β It's all about the Masters and the Open for me now it seems. Β The USGA is scared to require players to hit driver straight. Β Morons.

Really, Β snoozefests like this make me wonder if it would ever be possible to divide golfs professional ranks into 2 classes like auto racing?

Auto racing has F1, Β Indy, Β NASCAR. Β It's not that I ever watch that either but I might watch a pro golf tour playing with some equipment limits to make some of the older style short but tight tracks relevant again.

I am not an equipment guru but say some limits in clubs and ball to bring the performance to similar to balata and persimmon era. Β

I dunno compared to the snooze fest I might watch that tour.

Imo something needs to be done at least once a year at the US Open to setup a course in a way that long straight driving is a huge advantage but long and crooked pays the price. Β I mean bringing in some rough.

i was pumped when I saw Na's pathetic whining video. Β I was looking forward to seeing the tournament. Β Then I read they were going to have very wide fairways and lost all interest.

Yeah US Open needs to be on the edge of disaster. I hope Shinnecock has this coddled touring pros whining like the last time it was there when they lost the course.

NiceΒ idea. Golf balls with some limits, like the tires in racing. Getting pure strength out of equation and more ball flight control into it would be great to watch.Β

Β

Some of Tigers insane ball trajectories were a treat to watch!

Even as wide as they were, most pro's were in the fescue 4+ times each round. And that sh*t was rough.

I was researching a bit on Calvin Peete and he noted that many times for the tournament he was never out of the fairway off the tee.

Well, let me try.Β

Calvin Peete's name has a C and a P in it. Calvin also wore a white hat a lot. Brooks Koepka's name has a P and a K in it. The K in Brooks Koepka's name sounds like the C in Calvin's name because is it a hard C. Brooks also wore a white hat. So they're related.

There you have it.

7 first time champions but 4 of them had the label "Best player not to win a major on them." Two others (Walker, Koepka) were pretty household names. Willett really the only winner that was a bit of a surprise, but that was more a result of Spieth blowing it, not Willett winning it.

I do think from a ratings standpoint, golf needs its best players toΒ separate themselves a bit from the rest and right now that's not happening. Personally, I like the game right now, but I can also see why the game is losing attention in the news. It was at its best when Tiger was on top and even doing well when Rory and Spieth were winning majors.
