A friend and I were just having this conversation yesterday about today's top players not being as dedicated to winning because of the enormous amount of money that they make.

Yeah, I don't see it. Today's pros have to work harder to stay where they are than they ever had to work back in the day.

Hogan was famous for his grinding. His practice routine would be just the same as anyone else's in modern golf… and Tiger's would put his to shame.

Jack never really practiced ten hours a day during his off-weeks.

Steve Elkington is a tool. A racist, homophobic, sexist asshat.

Rory responding to him and taking him down a few pegs won't actually accomplish anything… except perhaps gaining Rory a few more fans.

Pretty sure I remember reading in Golf My Way that Jack liked to spend his time off playing tennis. He was a proponent of taking time off of golf for a mental break.

A desperate attempt for Elk to stay relevant.

Which, given he was the most hated guy on tour, makes for an odd desire - 'Hey don't forget about me...I was a total douchenozzle. Here's a shot at Rory in case you forgot.'

Maybe I get into "mom" mode when people talk smack on the boys I like. I just don't see the point. I tweeted back to the guy, "How come some dude I have never heard of is talking smack on the No. 2 pro?" Also, Brandel Chamblee can sod off, and Azinger has been a little douchey this week too, saying stuff about Rory and Rickie and even Kuch. And then even said that Lee Westwood wasn't happy when Sergio won the Masters because now that makes him the best pro not to win a major. I mean, what? These guys are all trying to be "edgy," and I don't need it. You're a commentator. Teach me something, give me some history. Keep your snark to yourself.

You said it yourself: they're commentators. They would be failing at their job if they were simply informative.

I reckon I just prefer people who stay positive rather than go negative. And like the thing Azinger said about Westwood...it's pretty presumptuous to put words in people's mouths or thoughts in people's heads. Not that there isn't a place for "negative" types of commentary. If someone is struggling with their putting, then they are, and we all see it. And then often a guy will explain how he addressed his own putting struggles, and it turns back into something constructive.

Anymore it's all about clicks on a website, or Twitter responses, or Facebook replies or whatever! God knows how these guys get paid and what their bosses are telling them!

I guess that's why I don't do any of that crap!

The Twitter squabble was fairly entertaining, until it got to the $100 million / $200 million thing. Just as well Rory is from Northern Ireland and not elsewhere in the UK. For a moment there, I almost heard a West Midlands accent gloat about being, "Considerably richer than you." Fans of Harry Enfield will know what I mean....

Elk was spot on. Pretty entertaining but Rory seems to not give a crap but I could see why. He has a life to live and maybe he doesn't love golf as much as other stuff just like Tiger.

That is pretty much a baseless opinion. Do you or Elkington have any document facts showing that Rory isn't practicing, isn't trying his best, isn't working hard? If so, then show it. If not, then don't try to think you know Rory.

I don't think he's spot on at all. I would bet a substantial sum that Rory works harder at his game - against stiffer competition - than Elk ever did. All the guys do. I don't think people who say that the modern pro lacks drive hasn't been on the range at a PGA Tour event recently.

I've seen Rory working at his game. He's not a slacker. (I can only say I'd bet because Elk is old, so I never saw him working on his game.)

Isnt the rib injury that Rorys been struggling with a rsi?

Basically something you would get from practicing a lot.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
