With the horribly cold weather that many of us are dealing with right now...I am curious to know if anyone has tried to play golf in weather like this before?

What is your low temperature limit for playing a round?  Mine used to be about 39 degrees if it was sunny and no wind...as the years go by I really don't want to go out and play until it gets at least into the 50's...and even that is a stretch.  Except, right now that would feel like a heat wave.

I played Wednesday here in Atlanta and I think the temp was 37 degrees. Water hazards had ice on them and thankfully so. I hit short on one hole and it bounced off ice up onto fringe.

It took a couple hours to warm up afterwards though.

I'm going to try and play tomorrow in what is forcasted to be 30*f +/- for the high. Not sure what my swing is going to be like since I am going to be bundled up, looking like that Michelein Tire guy.  I should be fine as long as my feet don't get cold.

I once played a round in northern Nevada in a snow storm. It was windy, and snow/rain mix was  flying horizontally. The wind chill was low enough that ice would form on my mustache. I would guess in the mid to low 20s. Maybe lower. It was a family outing, and copious amounts of alcohol was involved.

My preferred low these days, being older, and wiser, is above 40*f.  Called home today. Grand daughter told me it was 65*, sunny, and no wind.

Definitely played in below 5 degrees celsius (c. 40 fahrenheit) before - haven't had a problem since getting a pair of mitts, which just make the world a much better place on days like that. Hated it previously for the fear of thinning one!

Currently focusing on: Key 4 - shorter backswing.

I've played in 20 *F (-6 *C) weather many times.

Last week, I teed off when it was in mid 20's *F.  Had winter gloves on in between shots, and walked.  I have a tee time early this morning when the temp is suppose to be around 32 *F and, hopefully, warming up to mid 40's by the turn.  I'll keep my fingers crossed.

That's impressive. Every year I play in sub-freezing temps but can't remember playing in the low 20's. The upside is that few others will be out in that weather. Probably a good thing. The last thing I'd want is to be standing around waiting for others.

Sadly, it's rare up here for the temps to be that cold and not have snow on the course. My course is at a ski resort and there have been times when the slopes are open while the course is clear. I get some funny looks from the skiers and snowboarders in the parking lot when I load my clubs on the cart and walk out while they're putting on their gear.

I think I'd play at 20° if the course would let me. Anything below that is probably a health risk. I've had mild frost bite on my toes and I really shouldn't get out in the really cold temps without wearing insulated boots. But you never know. Even after a month of no golf, the desire to play becomes pretty strong.

Walking at a fast pace helps keep the blood flowing. I tend to play some of my fastest rounds in cold weather.

35-40 and no wind, Sun has to be out and ground not frozen.

This past season we played a couple windy December days where the windchill had it in the teens.  That sucked.

I'll play into the 30's if it's sunny and relatively calm.  Played yesterday when it was 45 and cloudy, but not too much wind.  Actually pretty nice for the front, then the temp dropped another 5*...

The biggest problem for me, as I get a little older is that the cold and wearing more clothes exacerbates my relative inflexibility.  I also have some arthritis in my hands that really picks up in the cold.

It's hell to get old....

I have played exactly once in temperatures near freezing.  A cold front moved in while we were out on the course and the wind got up.  It had been in the low 40's when we started and dropped into the mid-30's by the time we finished up.  We enjoyed the round; but were awfully glad to get back to the clubhouse...and indulge in a wee dram.

In der bag:

Will play down to about 40F these days, hopefully without wind. Years ago, we tried to play at least one time each month of the year, as long as there wasn't snow. Frozen ground guaranteed long tee shots with plenty of roll. Flagsticks frozen in the cup; couldn't pull them out. Just bring a bottle of liquid warmth and have fun while you can.

Bunch of years ago, 22 degrees at tee off.  After 12 holes, and temp was only 24...we gave it up.  In the part of the world I live  in now, that probably would never happen.  Too much moisture in the air and I don't know of any courses that open in that kind of temperature.

Played in sub 20F on Jan 1st with a good friend of mine. Wind chill was down to 9F and rose to a balmy 17F but gloriously sunny. The real heroes were the pocket warmers. I think these made the difference between playing and not playing.

We walked with push carts and at one point had to remove one of the sub layers (had a total of 4). Ball bounced off the green on the first hole so played everything 10 or so yards short of the green to trundle it on. Worked out ok.

Great way to start the year! Will absolutely do it again once the snow melts away.

    • Two things I bring up when it comes to this discussion. One is if you have let's say two towns next to each other, one has a population of 10,000 people and the other has a population of 1,000 people. Let's also say that they never play golf against each other. Only among themselves. In the first town, you have one guy who has won 15 events, then a couple of guys who won 6, a couple who won four and a bunch of people who won three, two and one events. In the second town, you have one guy who won 18 events, then a guy who won 11, a guy who won 9, a guy who won 8, a couple who won 7, a couple who won 3-5 and then a few 2s and a few 1s. Who's the best golfer? It's possible it's the guy who won 18, but it's pretty unlikely. Far more likely to be the guy who won 15 in the much bigger town.  In the same way, I view the fact that there is more parity in the 1990 and onwards world than there was in the pre 1990 world as a plus for Tiger. It's much harder to stand out if the fields are deeper, stronger, better. If there are a handful of players who win all of them, that tends to suggest weakness to me, not strength. The other thing is Ed White. Harvey Penick talked about him in one of his books. Ridiculously good at the game, but no one ever heard of him, because he got a job and didn't play professionally. There was no money in it and he needed security, so he took a job that paid him steadily. No clue how many people there are out there like him, but if he was around today, he'd be playing pro golf for sure. If he had played professionally, Penick sure seemed to think he'd have been one of the best of all time. Fred Haas played him in a college match and got stuffed. 40 years later he walked into Penick's shop and saw Ed White's picture on the wall and, after a full career playing pro golf, he said that Ed White was the best player he ever saw. Those 40 years would presumably have included at least some of Jack. I can see why people might say Jack is the GOAT. I don't agree, but I can at least understand why they say it. IMO there is no argument you can make for anyone other than Tiger to be the BOAT though. At least not yet.
    • A good option is to play the Par 3 courses. after playing an 18 -hole round. The Par 3 courses have 18 holes, we usually played only 9 holes after playing 36 holes on each of the trips we had. You may want to check out Grand National while you're in the middle of Alabama. I enjoyed Oxmoor Valley and Ross Bridge courses which are a short drive north.
    • In August, I am playing the World Am in Myrtle Beach. I do not know which courses yet, but should be a blast. Aside from that, those are the only golf trip plans, unless I play while on vacation in Destin in June.
    • Even on a perfect center hit I was receiving at most 1.48 smash factor. 10 days ago on the warming up for a round my Driver made a weird sound, I checked the bottom and it was cracked. Don't know for how long it was cracked but at least this time the crack was easy visible. Maybe it was already cracked before but with a more subtle crack?.. don't know. I'm waiting for TaylorMade to approve the warranty and send me a new head. I was using the Stealth Plus, I will take the opportunity and upgrade it to the Qi10 LS paying the difference.  On Sunday with my old Titleist 915 and softer balls I was reaching 1.5, even 1.51 on center hits. Test didn't went well. Only gained 2..3 miles, not worth pursuing. Figured out that with a ball and with a target, my path was way to in to out with this new idea, so in order to move the club in the correct path I needed to slow down to redirect the club on the downswing or aim more to the right, close the face a play a big hook.. not possible. I already play a big draw with Driver, more curvature is unplayable. Yesterday at home, with no ball messed around with a more neutral path, even swinging a little out to in. It felt a lot more in sync with the body. With a big in to out path it feels like my hands are working right, away from the body, when the body is working to rotate to the left. With the path to the left is was easier to apply force thru the hitting zone.  As always tested 10 swings with my current swing (A), and 10 with this little out to in path(B).  The difference was huge, like 12 miles faster with swing (B). I knew something wasn't right. The fact was that the PRGR was aligned more in line with the (B) path so it of course was giving higher speeds. I proceeded to align it with the (A) path and tested again 5 more swings each. Again (B) was faster but only by 5 miles. (Made a tiny experiment moving the PRGR to a more extreme in to out path and the swings register 25/30% slower for both swings, so it wasn't reading properly at that angle) Finally I moved the PRGR in the middle of both paths, and this time (B) won by 9 miles. Off course, this was without a ball and a target so.. I will be hitting the range tomorrow to see the real difference.
