Before the tournament started.

Spieth knows how to interview. He's got a masters from the Crash Davis School of Journalism.

Only one round, but damn, Spieth looks tough to beat again at Augusta. Glad he bogeyed the last because I was starting to think this was going to be another runaway performance. However, I do think Rory is on his game and is the one guy that can push him and beat him. Just a different feel and look for Rory this year than past years. Looks a lot more confident on the greens and that can make a big difference for him.

That being said, if I had the choice of taking Jordan/Rory to win vs. the Field, I'd be putting a lot of $$$ on Jordan/Rory. Those two have a lot of confidence to go with their skill right now and that's dangerous.

As for Tiger, he played okay, but didn't take advantage of the par-5s. Jordan played the par-5s in -5. Rory in -3. Tiger played them in Even Par. He needs to improve upon that.

So if Saturday thunderstorms, it helps whoever is in the early lead, no?

73 for Tiger (giving him a two-putt from the fringe). Could have been much worse, couldn't have been much better.

You know what they say, you can't win it on day 1 but you can lose it.  And he avoided losing it.

In spite of Sergio's efforts, 15 is still playing the easiest hole on the course... Impressive going!

Maybe they should apply Equitable Stroke Control type adjustments to the scores used to compute hole difficulty.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

Bad weather, harder to score Saturday?

For everybody. So what's the difference?

If anything it might favour the players down the list because they finish earlier and the leaders get the bad weather later as that's when it arrives usually.

There was a graphic on the post-round recap showing that Spieth has led or shared the lead in 9 rounds in the Masters (out of the 17 rounds he has ever played). Do you know for how many rounds Tiger can say the same? 9. This is not to belittle Tiger's record, but Spieth. . .wow! Jack is leader with 20-something (I forgot exactly how many.)

Also works the other way where the bad weather hits, suspends play and the players who tee off later get softer conditions and less wind. That's the way it works out a lot of the time. Who knows. We'll just see how it plays out Saturday. Forecast doesn't look good, though. 90% chance of strong storms between noon-3.

Well it's not just Tiger. He already passed Phil's record in this regard. Amazing stuff from a guy who hasn't even turned 25 years old yet. Arnold and Jack once said Tiger should win 10+ green jackets. It sure looks like Spieth is the Chosen One in this regard. He owns that golf course!

I think I read somewhere that the last 12 masters champions were in the top 10 after day 1. I think Spieth would have the best bet (at this course) than any of the other guys in the top 10 currently. I think Rory is more talented but is more inconsistent.

Yeah I know.

No really, yeah Tiger is T29 right now. Could he miss the weekend? Possibly. Will he. Not a chance.

Why?

His driving was was wild on 11, 13, and 15. He made 3 5s. He didn't birdie a single par-5, today. I will bet he birdies at least 2 tomorrow. After he rinsed one at 12, and made a great 4, by the way. He made two birdies at 14 and 16. His last two drives were perfect... His last two iron shots right on line. Something clicked after the birdie at 16. Is he where he wants to be, probably not. Can he still win? If today was his bad round... Absolutely. He was kind of blah... But he's right there. Yes 7 strokes back... But he hit three dann near perfect iron shots to finish the day. If he gets off to a hot start, look out.

With the weather on the weekend looking the way it does... Double digits under par (as a winning score) might be a pipe dream on the weekend.

Average first round score is 69 for the last 12 Masters champions and they averaged 4.6 on the leaderboard after Day 1. Going to be very difficult to make a huge comeback for the likes of Rose, Woods, D-Johnson, Watson, Thomas, Noren, Day, Scott, and other big names that shot Even or worse today. There are a ton of quality players ahead of them on the board.

    • Day 211 (29 Nov 24) - Friday men’s round albeit a solo foursome (temps in the 40’s, day after Thanksgiving and the average age closer to 75 - I’m a youngster at 65).  Interesting day of semi-solid play (8 of 18 GIR). Hit all four par threes in one (a first) - parred each; still had a couple 3 putt bogies; and blew up on 3 of the par 5’s (go figure)). The blow ups were some serious tree rattlers - amplifying how I got stupid and greedy instead of smart and content to just get back in the short stuff.
