Just my opinion but it may be because it's how the pros dress.  It's got be pretty brutal to wear pants in summer heat so you don't see many recreational players wearing pants.

Pants can be cooler than shorts.

It’s not showy at all.

Only because a lot of recreational golfers don't realise that wearing long pants made out of the correct material keeps you cooler and more comfortable. I play high 30 degrees C weather in long pants and have never for a moment wished I was wearing shorts.

Protection from bites from ticks and other bugs. Less sun block required as well.

Well yeah, you sort of need pants when it's 30 degrees out. I can't imagine wearing shorts in that weather, and I'll wear shorts in 50 degree weather no problem.

:-P

I think the staff bag with your name on it is the showiest thing I've seen. That said, I'd bet there are people who say I'm pretty showing. I've got the TST Newport Cup headcover, game golf on one hip, GPS on the other hip, and custom yardage book cover. It's pretty ridiculous all together.

C not F

I'm saying that in 100 degrees F long pants are more comfortable. The right ones. Not jeans or chinos.

39 degrees celsius is about 102 degrees Farenheit. :-)

Probably the guy who turned up at the range wearing white from head to toe. Looked like Randall & Hopkirk deceased if they played on the PGA tour!. All white, all Taylormade. Talyormade staff bag and clubs. Must have been a couple of £k he was wearing and carrying.

He knew people would stop to look at him which made it all the more hillarious when he swung his driver and let go of it. Kept asking for people to stop hitting so he could get it and nobody did.

They’re probably more focused on the fact that you’re scoring pars and birdies while they’re struggling to score bogies.

On the range, grunting loudly after you hit every shot ? While not really hitting it all that far. Maybe more annoying than look at me. That's all I got.

It is brutal.

At least in my case, I don't have legs that ought to be displayed in public.

I like the guys that try to compare what clubs you are hitting on par 3s or approach shots that are similar distance.  We have a 170 yard par 3 completely over water with 2 bunkers behind the hole.  I step up with a 6 iron (5 iron if its into the wind) and play it to the middle of the green, and they ask what club that was.  They look at me kinda crazy when I say 6 iron (or 5).  "How cant you get a 7 iron there" is the usual response.  Well...I can, but why not hit a 3/4 flighted 6 iron to be sure it gets there instead?  Love the "what's your distance with (insert club here) guys".

^^^ is a good one. There is a considerable subset of this game that is preoccupied/fascinated with hitting as far as possible. They don't care if they shoot a 96 as long as they will hit a few monster shots. They want you to watch them do it and they love to brag about it.

Ya it’s pretty hilarious.  Besides one buddy I play with that is stupid long with his driver, I am usually one of the longest hitters in my group...but I am always hitting one or even two more irons than the rest of them because I like 3/4 swings and flighting the ball, to me it’s fun.  They can’t wrap their heads around it..haha

They're the "Timmy" of the golf world.  They just want big numbers, and don't care what else happens.  I'd say a fair few of us here are the "Spike" type players, studying, trying to improve ourselves and get lower scores as that's more along the lines of "winning" golf...

    • Day 468 - 2026-01-11 Loooooong day. Did some work in the patio door (as a mirror) when I got home.
    • I caught a video on this driver; the face tech seems crazy. Looking at the heat map for ball speed, hitting it basically anywhere on the face only loses a few percent ball speed. The surprising and counter intuitive part to me was that for flat faced clubs, ball speed loss is directly proportional to distance loss. For clubs with bulge and roll this is apparently not true. The surprising part of that story being that the max distance potential looks to be a tiny pee sized area for this driver, and I feel in general for drivers. The counter intuitive part being (the myth?) that blade irons have a pee sized sweet spot and missing that tiny spot causes dramatic losses. And that modern drivers, maybe 2017 on, have massive sweet spots and are ultra forgiving. Where in reality, if this heat map data is valid and reliable, it might be a bit of the opposite. This insane tech driver appears to have a pea sized "sweet spot" while Mizuno Pro 241 irons are 28% more forgiving compared to the average of all clubs measured. Not compared to other players irons, compared to all clubs from all categories, players to SGI! The Pro 241 being essentially just a solid chunk of metal with no "tech" at all. Which for me devolves into a whole mess of what is forgiveness really? And in measurable and quantifiable results how many yards, or feet, does that translate into?
