  1. 1. Do you choke up to get your 'tweener' distances?

    • Yep, I'll choke up for 'tweener' distances

I never seem to think about choking up when I'm on the course (except real short shots with a SW of LW).  I wonder if I should add this to my tool box.

And while we are on this topic, how much do you choke up?  Say the distance is right between your 6i and 7i, how much do you choke up on the 6i to get that in between distance?

Thoughts...

Depends on the lie and such. I typically choke down a bit. Sometimes I'll just hit an iron with a 3/4 backswing length. It might be a combo of both.

Usually just a back swing adjustment using the same grip. Most of the time I look at the yardage backwards from the pin, and plan my first, and/or second shot to get a full swing approach shot into the green. My way of managing the course. .

Yep ... I choke up an inch or inch and a half - only because you're supposed to.    More often than not, I hit it just as far and find myself way long.   Choking up really doesn't do anything for me at all ... I think it's total BS to be honest.   I can take shorter back swings and come through it hard to take a bunch of yardage off, but to take say 5-10yards off, choking up always disappoints me & I don't see any lack of yardage

I choke down but only with my wedges. After watching the flighted shot video on here I don't know if I'll even be doing that anymore.

This year I have been choking up all the way for all my SW shots inside 80 yards or so.  I have had a noticeable increase in accuracy doing this, and I've never been better from those yardages.

From longer distances I don't have a rangefinder or anything so I don't usually have my yardage nailed down enough to know whether I should choke up or not.  I may experiment with it though and see if it works.

I choke when I try to hit a tweener distance, is that close enough?

I can choke up to an inch on my wedges and a couple inches on my longer irons for tweener distances, and more if my feet are below the ball. I try to setup my hands in the same position relative to my body every time.

Choke not a good golf word. Grip Down is better. Sometimes when I do I get the same distance anyway so I can't count on a tweener shot just by gripping down.

I used to and a lot with wedges.

this post reminds me that I should use this tool again because my distance control is poor now that I hit it straighter.

I grip down on everything including driver for all shots in general but not to adjust for distance - just that the feel suits my shot making. The only time I really need to adjust for distance is 70 yards and inside which I intuitively do by swing length.

I'll grip down a bit at times, but it's situational.  I almost try to hit a "standard shot" for a front or back pin, I'll take the right club to hit the ball closer to the center of the green (i.e. past a front pin, or short of a back pin).  For a center pin, I'm more likely to take the longer club and grip lower to shorten the shot.  I've read, and I can't remember where right now, that gripping down an inch only reduced the shot by 2 or 3 yards, if the swing is done with the same pace and effort.  Maybe one of our more learned members can confirm that (or tell me I'm completely wrong)

I always grip down when I need to take a little distance off of a shot.  It reduces your leverage and is much easier and more consistent than trying to slow your swing down.
