Are you able to "let the last shot go"?

  1. 1. Do you forget about the last (bad) shot you hit or does it linger?

    • No Problem. Once it's over....it's over.

I don’t let it go per se. I use it to make the next shot better. I try to analyze what I did wrong or differently and correct for the next shot. I’m getting pretty good at feeling what went wrong from all the video I’ve done of my swing.

I'm ok with bad shots. My goal is to remember to not follow a bad shot with a stupid shot, in an effort to recover the distance. Stupid shots make doubles and triples.

A wise person once said "You aren't a good enough golfer to get upset over a bad shot."

The neighbor that introduced me to golf last season puts it this way: "You haven't been playing long enough to get upset about playing poorly" :-$

I don't get upset about a single poor stroke.  Nor do I carry it with me.  I do become unhappy, frustrated, what-have-you, when it's bad stroke after bad stroke--which has happened a couple times.  Even then I try to just play my game and keep my disappointment to myself--trying not to bring down my playing partners.

I don't dwell upon the bad shots, but if I am shure of the cause, I remember why things went awry. That doesn't necessarily mean I have the cure, but  at least I know why this one will get screwed up.

Okay, I've been debating whether or not to call BS on this poll.

More than 80% of us claim we don't get upset over bad shots.?!?!?!?!

Yet, I see people chucking clubs, throwing tantrums, and pitching fits out there on the course every time I play? hmm........

I see this as one of four possibilities:

  1. The people on this forum are much calmer, cooler and more collected than the average person out on the course.
  2. There are really very few golfers out there throwing tantrums, but those turn out to be the ones I seem to either encounter or at least remember.
  3. There are a lot of people who THINK they are very calm about bad shots, but are NOT very calm about bad shots.
  4. The people taking this poll are full of hooey!

The phrasing maybe the issue. “I can’t let go” implies it ruins the rest of the round to me. But in reality, I can get pissed off, but only briefly.

It really depends on my overall mood. Typically I let I go and focus on the next challenge. If I’m in a fowl mood, then people around me better be ready to duck.

Well...the problem with my poor shots is they often ruin the round for other people as well....lol.

I am somewhere in the middle, it angers me for sometimes the rest of the round, but at the same time, I try not let it influence my shot or actions. I change it into positive energy and rock on.

I used to let bad shots bother me, but not so much anymore. I might stew over a bad shot momentarily while walking to my ball, but once I get there I am able to move on and focus on the shot I need to execute next.

I am not sure how I was able to change this, or at what point it changed.

The poll asks if we forget about bad shots, not if we get upset about them. I’m perfectly capable of getting upset about a bad shot and then letting the moment pass. It’s really no different than when I hit my head on something at work, yelling an expletive, then resuming my work as if nothing happened.

I can see the distinction.

By the way, are you hitting your head at work often?

All the time. Why do you think I forget my bad shots so easily?

I went with once it's over, it's over. I'd say I'm here 90% of the time. The shots that piss me off and tend to linger are shots that I lose focus because "they're an easy shot and I've hit them well plenty of times." When I rush and just go through this type of shot and bone it, yeah, that gets under my skin.

I read this post yesterday and decided to reply today after I watch a guy blow  up after he bladed his pitch shot. We were finishing our round and as I waited to putt on the 18th green I witnessed this older gentleman blade his pitch.  He just blew up, I couldn’t believe how angry he got. It’s like his whole body was seized in anger!  He stormed off to his ball. Thought he was going to have a heart attack right then and there.

We are recreational golfers and our games are not that good. Our HDCP’s are a measure of our abilities.  Yes we like competing and we want to score our best, but I don’t get why we get so emotional over a bad shot. I see it as an opportunity to improve.

I hit several bad shots a round and I’m not perfect but I’ve learned to accept that it happens. My immediate thought is to begin focusing on recovering and to minimize the damage.

Today I shot 80, 41/39. Missed some short putts, flubbed a few chips. But I didn’t have any doubles as I focused on recovering from those bad shots.

I review each round shot by shot and grade each shot as a good solid shot or a poor shot. I would say I hit on average about 55% solid shots. So far after 51 rounds this year I’m hitting 70% of my fairways and 42% of my greens. Putting average is 30.  I’m not worried about my driving, putts per round or bunker play. I’m probably the typical golfer who struggles with long irons and shots out of the rough.

Knowing my shortcomings when I play my next round my concentration level is higher when I hit those shots that give me trouble.

I get a bit mad at such a shot, but am tempered by the thought that even the pros have terrible shots, so how can I expect not to. Golf is a challenging game and I expect to have bad shots for a mid capper. Yes, I get angered, but bad shots are going to happen, so acting like an inflamed idiot is foolish.
