The General Idea

Using the OWGR points (http://www.owgr.com/ranking) as their "stock price," we'll each choose players and an amount of stock given $100, and we'll invest in those players for a period of time, at which point we'll re-choose players for the next period, and so on. The contest ends when the Tour Championship concludes, and the player who has the most money at that point is the winner.

Prizes

  • For first through third place, a one-year Supporter membership in the form of a credit to your account and a badge for your signature area.
  • For second through first place, I'll add you to CoachNow and help out from time to time for a few months (how many will depend on how frequently you post).
  • For first place, a (non-transferrable) two-hour GEARS session or, if you're too far away to use that, extended use of CoachNow.

You can barter to trade any of the above, if I'm willing to do it. 🙂

The Rules

This game will consist of three periods of play:

  • Period 1: Today through the Valero Texas Open (April 3) - 88 days.
  • Period 2: The Masters through the RBC Canadian Open (June 22) - 81 days.
  • Period 3: The U.S. Open through the Tour Championship (August 28) - 67 days.

Players in this game:

  • Must buy shares in a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 6 players from the OWGR top 500.
  • Must spend at least 95% of your portfolio's value. Unused money simply rolls over to the next period.
  • Must buy at least three shares of each player chosen.
  • Must buy at least one player in the top 30 in the current (at the start of the period) OWGR rankings.
  • Must spend all available "money" for each period.
  • Cannot trade out a player's stock for any reason while in an active period.
  • Cannot buy partial shares.
  • Have $100 to spend for their first Period (even if someone joins Period 2 or 3).
  • The winner§ of Periods 1 and 2 will receive a bonus $10 to invest, and second place gets an additional $5. Last place gets an extra $10 as well, with next-to-last getting an extra $5.
  • Only get to make one lineup submission. You can edit for up to 36 minutes (moderators can edit in perpetuity).
  • Must "do the math" correctly and be honest in their lineups.
  • Will be removed from the game if they fail to be honest or do the math correctly. So, double-check your work, @ChetlovesMer.

§ The winners and losers of Periods 1 and 2 are judged by their % change. Grow $100 to $160 in Period 1 and you're +60%. Go from $160 to $120 in Period 2 and you're down -25%. (Change divided by original.)

The stock price is their OWGR ranking points (not their rank, but their points: Jon Rahm is #1 OWGR ranking with 9.34 points, so one share of Rahm is worth $9.34) on the first day of the period and the last day of the period.

Players have until this Saturday (January 8, 2022) at midnight (Western time zone) to choose their first set of stocks. Between periods, players have from the conclusion of the weekend's tournaments to the Saturday at midnight (Western time zone) of the next event. If you don't submit a lineup change, you'll roll the same lineup into the next period.

The winner is the person with the largest bank account at the end when they've cashed out their portfolios at the end of Period 3.

An Example

For example, let's suppose you choose five players (Players A, B, C, D, and E) that have current OWGR points of 7.5, 5.0, 2.0, 1.5, and 1.0. You buy them as such:

  • A and B, 4 shares each: 4 * 7.5 + 4 * 5 = $50
  • C and D, 10 shares each: 10 * 2.0 + 10 * 1.5 = $35
  • E, 15 shares: $15

At the end of Period 1, their OWGR points are: 6.5, 5.5, 3.5, 1.5, and 1.25 in order. Your portfolio is now worth: 4 * 6.5 + 4 * 5.5 + 10 * 3.5 + 10 * 1.5 + 15 * 1.25 = $116.75. You've "made" $16.75 and now have more to invest in Period 2. This person would have had +16.75% growth.

How to Make Your Picks

Make a post which looks a lot like this (I'm using fake players so as not to suggest, hint, etc. at anything):

@iacas's Stock Selections:

  1. Patrick Smith (25th) - 5 @ $3.75 = $18.75
  2. Steven Trouton (100th) - 10 @ $1.50 = $15.00
  3. John Gruber (101st) - 10 @ $1.49 = $14.90
  4. John Siracusa (150th) - 33 @ $1.10 = $36.30
  5. Casey Liss (250th) - 20 @ $0.75 = $15.00
  6. open

Total spend: $18.75 + $15.00 + $14.90 + $36.30 + $15.00 = $99.95 ($0.05 rollover).

Note that I put my selections in horizontal rules, made space for all six picks even if I didn't use them all, and "showed my work" for all picks including their price and current OWGR ranking (please include this).

Rules Disputes or Clarifications

I, as the commissioner and chairman of this stock exchange, will decide on any rules disputes and/or issue any clarifications needed. I'll make note on the date it occurs, and edit this post as well.

That's It!

Have fun!

And less work. You only have to "do" something four times per year: now, and at the end of each Period.

Added the emphasis to include current OWGR ranking in your picks.

I'd also advise against the use of tables, as fixed widths aren't very responsive.

I used an ordered list.

    • Both @DaveP043 and I play in our interclub matches every year, and have been team Captains as well.  There are always a few courses, mine is one, that win a lot of matches (we've won twice in the last 7 years), and we've been labeled as sandbaggers.  However, I really think that our course was rated too low (our greens just never seemed to get factored in enough), and thus our Handicaps were always a stroke or maybe 2 above, what they would've been if the course was rated higher.  And then when we went and played other courses, their slope and rating were much higher than ours, and sometimes I would get a 2 or 3 stroke bump on top of that.  It was definitely an advantage.  However, this past year, our course was rated again and the slope has gone up, so we'll see if we continue to have the same benefit.  Season starts this Sunday for us.
