I'm guessing the iron in the 2013 swing is a wedge, looks shorter than the club in the 2014 swing. Camera is lower in the 2014 iron swing as well.

I'm no expert, but the 2014 swing looks much more athletic and free-flowing. Not as mechanical, IMO. It is on a range compared to in competition so that could be a factor but, if he can bring that onto the course, nice.

No matter what swing Tiger has had throughout the years, he has ALWAYS been a stripe show on the range.  Always.

Let's hope this most recent iteration can translate into pressure filled competition (it's still worth mentioning though that when he had his healthy moments with his "Foley" swing, it did translate into 8 wins in two years).

He's got a much later wrist cock on the new swing, also looks like he's bringing the clubhead (hands too?) more to the outside on the way back, appears to be less hands in front/shaft lean at impact on that wood swing.

That looks pretty gosh darn close to "exactly the same."  ;)  And kudos for fixing the dummy's "after then before" videos.

Might be the camera angle, but he looks slightly less rotated at the top (the old swing looks like a bit of an overswing) and he's throwing the club earlier, which should help with his Key #3.

I'm not sure that's true.  The angle of his left arm looks ever so slightly different in the two pictures ... enough to bring in the possibility that these two swings aren't so much different as they are just captured at different points in the swing.  The left is A5.891 and the right is A5.914. :-P

As far as the 3wood swing is concerned, if we're just playing "Highlights" magazine here then I would say ...

  1. His head looks slightly less rotated
  2. His stance looks a teensy bit wider
  3. His right elbow is less behind him (or at least its less behind his left arm)
  4. His pants are a little darker
  5. and his shirts a little less "orangey." :-P

I agree with @colin007 - can't see much difference in the driver swing, just slightly less turn at the top like @billchao said, but whatever he's doing, there's less shaft lean at impact.

There's a huge difference in the DTL iron swings though - not sure if it's the angle, different clubs or the older swing is a control swing, but A1-A2, clubhead and hands going out. Hands go in much later in the current swing, right forearm more pointing to the ground and wrist more bowed at A4. It's almost Fowler like? Around impact, the 2013 swing, his inclination to the ground is lower, 2014 the shoulder plane less steep. It feels like the iron swings in the video aren't optimal for comparison though - conditions too different.

I'm reading on the interwebs people saying it looks like he stopped dipping. LOL, no!

If cameramen took swing videos from the same optimal angle, that would clear up so much confusion out there. Yeah, Neverland. I wonder if a device that beeped when you're at the optimal camera angle would help?

Hips look like they're at the same point in the swing though, so I'd say the sequencing is better in the new swing. His arms are slightly behind him in the old swing, regardless of what nearest decimal place he's at :-)

I doubt that much has changed. Whatever has changed is going to be very subtle.

Tiger's always striped it on the range. He's also always been much smoother on the range.

With those iron swings you can't get a fair comparison. The angles are quite a bit different between the two. It looks the same to me, but I still am looking forward to seeing how he plays this weekend. Hopefully it's better than he has in his most recent outings and he's on track to play well again.

Oh c'mon Erik, subtle schmubtle. If we can't overanalyze and hypothesize and hyperbolize over Tiger's swing, then what can we do? Anyways, biggest things I see are the late wrist cock and the outside hands and clubface a la Rory.

Hard to tell from the DTL view, the camera angles are not the same. Still, he looks like he's not standing as close to the ball and it looks like the club is more shallow going into the ball at impact.

There is a lot of talk out there about Tiger going back to his old swing from his amateur days.

http://www.golf.com/tour-and-news/tiger-woods-goes-back-basics-swing-coach-chris-como-hero-world-challenge

Quote:

Woods hasn’t played a competitive round since August, when he shot 74-74 at the PGA Championship. He has a surgically repaired back, and admitted he came back from his March microdiscectomy too soon at the Quicken Loans National in July, just a week after he’d begun hitting driver again. His scores, he said, were “awful.” The final tally in 2014: Seven starts, two missed cuts, two WDs, and one long sabbatical.

“Nothing was very good,” Woods said.

But now he’s back, and at an unofficial tournament he has won five times, on his old home course. It was Woods’s pal Notah Begay III who suggested Woods meet with the Dallas-based Como. Woods said he’d think about it and eventually agreed to meet. Como had the same idea Woods did, namely that it was time for him to go back to the more natural, longer, flowing swing he used in dominating amateur golf.

For those of you who are wondering how "coachable" Tiger is:

Quote:
“I knew that things were going to go well when within the first five or 10 minutes, they were already talking about certain philosophies or ideas that each one of them had,” Begay told Golf Channel. “And in that particular instance, Chris was doing more listening than talking, and I felt like that was a step in the right direction because Tiger had a preconceived notion on what he wanted to do and how he wanted to do it.”

Another article:

Quote:

In an attempt to return to return to old form, Tiger Woods said today he plans to channel some of the characteristics of his swing as a junior golfer while working with new coach Chris Como.

During a press conference Tuesday at Isleworth ahead of the Hero World Challenge, Woods said that he has studied video, alongside Como, of his swing as a junior golfer and plans to use what they’ve learned as the pair continue to work together.

“We looked at a lot of video from when I was a junior,” said Woods. “It was quite interesting to see where my swing was then, and how much force I could generate with a skinny frame. How did I do that? That’s kind of what we’re getting back into.”

He swung out of his shoes, that's how!

I found a GIF that shows six of his swings (one not counting because he was a toddler) side by side at pretty close to the same time. It's kind of interesting to look at, at least to me:

Yep pretty darn similar. The frame rates aren't exact so the pics won't match up perfectly. As mentioned a couple times, Tiger does tend to be smoother, more in sequence on the range.

I disagree @Golfingdad .  Woods is clearly wearing an orange shirt on the left and a blue shirt on the right.  I think the pants are different too.

    • As a supporter of the European team even though I chose to live in the US, this is kind of good news. I'm pretty close to Bethpage, but won't be going at these prices. Neither will the crazy drunk NY sports fans who would have made this a very difficult place to play as a Euro. The tickets will go to the city types who are entertaining clients and don't care about the money. Many of them are going to sit there and watch, not get all raucous. I am not dumb enough to believe that this is going to be like a Sunday afternoon stroll in the park for the Euros, but I think it will be significantly more subdued as a result of the prices. Even at $250 I would probably have been watching on the TV anyway so no real skin in the game.
