Isn't a captain really there to rally up the troops? Do they discuss specific strategy or just leave that up to the players. I mean what is there to say for the captain, "listen, we need you to win this match..."

I think Daly would be a good captain, he is talkative and outgoing, has charisma and personality.

I don't thnk guys like Phil or Tiger would make a good captain, their personalities are lacking.

And who the **** uses a word like paradigm on a golf forum??

Obviously not the types who use the term "who the ****"

At this point if the team continues to lose they need to add a spark.

Daly would bring that.

Daly will never captain because he would be a train wreck. I don't see any passion in him for something like that. He would not be able to motivate anyone. As soon as the team got behind, Daly would give up. He's a fun guy to watch and I believe a really good dude, but a leader he is not.

This guy has Ryder Cup captain material written all over him. They could even Β play the event in Sturgis South Dakota to make it even better. What a golf crowd that would be.

Has Daly ever even been on a Ryder Cup team??

No, he was close to Top 10 a few years butΒ never receivedΒ a captains pick.

JD has some personal issues but I actually think he is pretty bright and good/solid enough toΒ do this forΒ the national team.Β I also don't think he is a 24/7 party rebel as is his media image and I don't think he would simply toss a club in the lake and get on a plane the just because a particular pairing lost both their matches.

He may come across as cavalier/hot headΒ but even he would gracefully wear white for Wimbledon.

I have no real bias one way or the other coz' honestly I am not sure what a captain brings to the table for a group of very experienced pros. I think no matter who is picked official captain, the super seniors like PM,Β TW (if in the team) can actuallyΒ help with pairings and rotation. I am assuming it's all about who's hot and who's not and who pair well together and who doesn't... can't be that hard, or on the contrary, darn near impossible to get it right no matter who is captain as evident from the last few RCs -Β JD can do it just as bad or good.

One thing is for certain - if US lost again under him, entire world will have a easy hat to hang on.

We're talking about a guy who during a recent tournament Tin Cupped every ball in his bag into a water hazard.Β Β  That behavior doesn't indicate to me a rational strategist who can make the right decision under pressure.

I hear you and certainly deserves a serious consideration... but IMHO it's just a different setting. I think people behave differently when something affect just themselves vs. a whole team/nation. Also, I think tin cupping isΒ 5 minutes of individual madnessΒ that doesn't draw the same parallel when more individuals are involved especially the players themselves.

In short, I feel, RC captaincy would bring out the good side of JD (he has one). I would bet money on it. I mean not more than $5,Β but I would... :-D

I kinda don't get the Ryder Cup Captain thing . .it's always made such a big deal of but I don't see how it matters all that much who is Captain. Β I say we pick somebody from outside the world of golf - somebody who is maybe a winning coach in another sport or maybe even a business person. Β Definitely not Donald Trump, though. Β And not John Daly, either. Β The Ryders Cup Captain does sort of "represent" the US . .so we need to make sure we don't pick a clown. Β What about Michael Jordan?

Yeah, but MJ would try to eat the players if things went poorly.

How about Rex Ryan?Β  Nah, on second thought that's almost just like having John Daly. :-D Maybe Phil Jackson, the ultimate philosopher coach.

I think Daly would be an interesting choice.Β  I don't ever see it really happening, but it would be entertaining!

Phil Jackson would be hilarious. That big-ass frame of his, lording over those players, spouting that Zen stuff.

He'd be a great assistant captain and would put his heart into it. As far as his strategic or decision making capabilities, I think he's smarter than a lot of people give him credit for. As Captain it could potentially be the golf equivalent of the movie King Ralph. But I think he'd bring something as an assistant Captain. The U.S. is not exactly lighting it up lately.

As someone mentioned previously, the match play aspect really benefits a guy like Daly as the blowup holes are just a single hole. I think Daly could do some serious damage (in a good way ;)) in that kind of format. The dude has issues but he also has some great hands. EDIT: assuming he's a playing captain.

Playing captain?!! Oh hells nah. He should be captain, but if he plays, he might try to stab Darren Clarke. Come to think of it, he might stab Darren Clarke even if he doesn't play... I think he should be captain, but no playing.
