What'd You Shoot Today?

Recommended Posts

Shot an 87 today at Balboa.  Parred 3, 6, and 7.  Six after missing GIR, I hit a sand wedge to a few inches (and made the putt).  Bogeyed all the other holes.

Meh. 44-49 for 93 at The Neuse yesterday. My third straight round where I’ve had to fight to put up a decent number. I was able to stay around bogey golf until 18 when, for the third time that day, I put a ball OB off the tee and made triple.

Not much else to say apart from that except for the fact that I got up and down for par on the par-3 7th after an awful tee shot.

My plan is to hit the range tomorrow and prepare for Tuesday, when I’m playing with my boss and another coworker.

Shot 79 (41/38), 15 nGIR/GIR (8 GIR), 31 putts, no penalty strokes.

Worked on pre-shot routine all week, and I think that helped me step into my shot with commitment and execute a good swing. This is something that comes and goes, but I do think it is important on the course, so I plan to keep it up.

Driver was much better today after some setup and dynamic changes from my lesson, and generally I played well off the tee. Approach play was also solid. Last lesson my teacher said she thinks my target for GIR should be 50% based on what she sees in our sessions, so I was close, and a few of the nGIR could have been GIR with a some good "rub of the green". Miss today was slightly heavy, but not enough to be too penal (except for a couple shots that were more than slight chunks). Short game was good today - got the ball on the green with a chance to make a putt. Thought I putted well today, but didn't make any of the birdie chances I had.

Strokes gained vs. 10 HCP:

  • Tee = +1.44
  • Approach = +1.59
  • Short game = +0.35
  • Putting = +0.59

Played Pinehurst #5 today, White Tees, not overly long at 6,174/yards.  76 overall, 37/39. Stats?  Only one worth mentioning, 24 putts!  It’s not that tee to green was that bad, 7/15 fairways, only 4/18 greens. I was just off a bit. A few yards one way or another and those stats would have been better.  12 one putts! Just crazy. 11 on the front, 13 on the back. 3 sandy pars. Chips were close, very close!

31 on holes 11-18 at Whispering Woods. 7 pars with a birdie on the last. 7 GIR. I almost typed 8, but I was just a foot into the rough on 14 and chipped to a foot.

Decide to get 9 holes in before I thought it would rain, but it didn't rain for hours later.

Shot a 36: 5 pars, 2 birdies, 2 bogeys. 7 GIR.

88 again today a Minnesott (44 front / 44 back).  Have to say I have been consistent the past  rounds as they all have been 88.   Had bogie-bogie-triple to start.  Settled down go par - bogie - bogie - par - bogie - par for 8 over 44 front.   Back nine started double - bogie before going par - par - bogie - bogie - double - par - bogie.  Good part was there were no penalty strokes, just some weak putting as I had a total of 37 putts.  Still getting used to the new putter.  Had 4 GIR plus another 6 nGIR.  Approach game is improving as I am consistently on or near the green in regulation.

On the course where I shot an 80 a week or so ago, I was playing well until the ninth hole, and suddenly I forgot how to play golf (until I made an incredible par on the last hole, the #2 handicap).   ESC 89, helped in large part by a 7 and an 8-ESC-7 on holes 10 and 12.  Snap fades showed up today.  Also, when I missed the green with my pitch on #9, I ended a streak of 56 consecutive holes of either making birdie (once) or having putter in hand for par attempt (55 of those 56).  That's a darn good streak. I would fail again to have putter in hand on holes 11 and 17 today, so my active streak is now one.

96... 1 penalty shot (went into the water on 10). The course was baked. It was very difficult playing. Greens weren't holding anything. 50 on the front 9. 46 on the back. The 46 included the penalty stroke and a triple. It didn't feel like I was playing that badly. It was just one of those days when you don't get the bounces. I came back after the triple for bogey, birdie, par, bogey. The greens were shot, but we putted thru the Baja 400.

A young story and an old story!  Yesterday I played Pinehurst #6. A foursome was scheduled but only two of us showed up. I knew one person and the other was a father and daughter. Well only the daughter showed and off we went.  So.  I was 50 years older than her, she is 17 and a very good golfer. She’s off to Norte Dame on a golf scholarship next year after she completes high school. She’s a +2 HDCP.

So off we go, she’s playing a hybrid set of tees I’m playing White tees. She hits it straight and decently long for her age.  We are both even thru 3 holes until I make a double on the 4th hole. By the time we finish the front I’m 2 over and she’s 1 over. Back nine I had 1 birdie, 2 bogey’s and the rest were pars for a 75. She shoots 34 on the back with 3 birdies, two were back to back.  A71 for her.  She will be playing in the Woman’s  North South here next week and the Junior as well.  She has no desire to become a Pro Golfer, she is going to Medical School to become an Anesthesiologist.  Impressive I thought!

Todays old story…played with two old guys, one is 85 but plays ok and the other was 79. I’m the young guy at 67.  What a comedy!  I could tell immediately they play a lot together as the ribbing never stopped.  I quickly learned to stay alert as their shots started going everywhere!  Then the 85 year old guy gets the shanks! Never seen it so bad and I’ve had them a few times but never like this. The other guy played a very military game with shots left, right, left and so one. The on the 9th hole the 79 year old left a club on the previous hole and left to get it. Then the 85 year old checks his bag and the lost club is in it. Off he goes to get the other guy. They return eventually as the 1st guy went two holes back searching for his club. I’m in the fairway on the 10th hole waiting and here they come.  So then the 79 year old turns his cart steering wheel tightly to turn around and somehow gets the tow hook caught over the right front wheel axle rod so now the cart can only go in a circle!  It took about 15 minutes to figure that out! We fixed it using one of his irons to pull the tow hook loose! What next I thought.  We finally finished. The good news there was we finished in 2hrs 40min!

Happy 4th!

Played Brandywine Bay in Morehead City today with son and grandson. This was the first time playing this course so it was all about figuring it out. Played to an 88 (seems to be my number these days) 46 front & 43 back.  With 7 GIR and 5 nGIR I had hoped for low 80’s, however 41 putts did me in.  Four of the GIR holes were 3 putts, granted most of those were long putts that required a good lag putt.  Green speeds were quick, however after the quick rain shower between holes 3 & 4 they were really receptive and slowed down.  Overall the course was in good shape, considering that some of the greens are still needing work from Hurricane Florence in 2018.  A good day on a new “to us” course.

Time to play catch up! I’ve got four rounds in the past week and my Wilmington golf trip last week.

THE TRIP: Not a lot to say for either round in Wilmington. I shot an 88 (44-44) at Wilmington Municipal and a 92 (50-42) at Beau Rivage. Key moments from each round:

•Wilmington Municipal: Didn’t hit a fairway until the sixth, but made a few clutch par saves that kept me in the 80s.

•Beau Rivage: Finished the front quad-quad, then after I doubled 10 I went +4 on the last eight holes including a birdie on 18. A solid finish!

Tuesday: Played 36. I shot an 88 (48-40) at South Granville after stinking up the front and then an 88 at Umstead (42-46). Putts weren’t dropping all day, so that didn’t help in the slightest. I parred the last three holes though, so another good finish after a really rough start to the back nine.

Thursday: The only truly good round of all these. I played Croasdaile with a buddy after work, and I went 39-45 for 84. Two birdies on the day, both on par 5s (6 and 13). Beat my buddy 3&2.

Friday: Yesterday I drove an hour to River Ridge, but I don’t have much to show for it. I duct taped together a 44 on the front which included a chip in for par on 9, but it unraveled on the back. I ended up four putting the last hole for a quad (in addition to five three putts) and a 52 on the back for 96 total.

After all these rounds, my handicap is 11.5. Playing well on Thursday was crucial because a low differential (a 6.0) was falling off and the index had the potential to skyrocket. Limited the damage though.

My swing feels weird right now, so I’m going to the range after work today to see if I can get some stuff figured out.

Shot 82 this morning, 14 nGIR/GIR, 30 putts, and 2 penalty strokes.

First penalty stroke was on a recovery shot from a tough lie after I chunked my tee shot into a "native" area between the teeing ground and fairway. I was just trying to punch a 4-iron down the fairway, but it came out hotter than expected with some slice spin and rolled into a red stake hazard along the right side of the hole. Second penalty stroke was the result of a poor club choice off the tee, and a poor shot.

I thought I had a decent ball striking day, but lost strokes off the tee and approach, so not as good as I thought.

Compared to 10 hcp:

  • Tee = -0.83
  • Approach = -0.10
  • Short game = -0.07
  • Putting = +1.16

I played yesterday at my home course and shot a 43 with only 1 mulligan. The putter definitely was off, only`18 putts, but I definitely had a few that I just didn't putt well. I had only 2 GIR but a couple on the fringe in regulation. I felt the short game was fairly decent giving me a decent chance a couple times. I think the thing I'm most proud of is it was a slow round and it didn't really get into my head. Unfortunately I was in the slow group, luckily though we were one of the last groups out.

I've been busy with renovating my basement so I haven't been able to get out as much as I'd like so I have that excuse for poor putting, but in reality my miss (decel/timid) popped up a couple times that hurt me.

    • Going to a Friendsgiving tomorrow and I am bringing a no-bake cheesecake. I make the crust too big, but I think it turned out good. The filling is really good.
    • Sure, but how was your alignment? 🙂 Day 53 - 2024-11-22 Mirror work after getting back home. Wife is a superstar for her career/job/whatever.
    • I would say your back nine is the second nine you play that day. It's part of what makes getting some of those holes tougher. Or, if 18 holes are played pretty often, out of A, B, and C, and you often play A and C, A is the front and C is the back, regardless of the order you play them in. That way not birdieing C #7 isn't overcome by birdieing the easier A #7 on a day you played it C-A instead of A-C. But, at the end of the day, nobody really cares except yourself.
    • Day 128: played 9. Nice little even 9, with 2 birdies and 2 bogeys.
    • @DeadMan, I think your approach makes sense. As @dennyjones said, consistency is the key.
