Worst Collapse in a Major?

van de veld was the greatest looser story in golf history.

on top of this no french man in modern golf has won a major so his performance is even more a weener.

 

afterwards he even posted a video putting the hole from to tu the cup to see if he could make double at worst and succeed.

Golf has had many a golfer come close only to collapse at the end. Which do you think was the worst collapse in major history? By the way, I tried to find this topic on the forum before creating this poll. I couldn't find it, but if it already exists, feel free to merge me.

I have to go with Van de Velde. The others on the list have plenty of other accomplishments to their career, but that is the only thing he is really known for.

Tiger and Speith should be considered in their Masters mishaps.
All selected are equal IMO, they all lost.
Some were poor play and others to poor decisions.

Spieth’s collapse was quite spectacular. I voted Norman but Spieth is right up there.

I went with Van de Velde over all others. Norman still had 1/4 of the competition left to play.

Van de Velde only had to make a double bogey to win 1/72nd of the competition remaining

I guess I would give Van de Velde a slight pass because it was so unexpected that he would be in that position. Norman should never had let the moment get ahead of him at that point in his career. So he gets the nod from me.

I'm going to go with Norman because he was the best player in the world (and in his mind maybe all time) and he had a huge lead, but Van de Velde is worthy as well.

Wasn't a collapse at all - he hit the shots he was trying to hit. It was simply some bad, horrible, rotten luck. He made a medium-length putt just to force the playoff.

I didn't create the list, but the guy would have cruzed to victory with a double bogey. Making a triple on the last hole to fall into a playoff seems like a collapse to me.

I agree. Tiger's loss to YE Yang was eye poppingly shocking. If I saw that midget out on the street today I'd punch him in his trachea.

Am I the only one voting for Phil?

I choose Phil because I will always remember watching the tourney with my wife and my parents and the reaction in the room when Phil knocked off the hospitality tent. "DID THAT REALLY JUST HAPPEN!?!?"

Then he whacked it off the tree only to have the ball basically roll back to his own feet and we all just looked at each other. Up to that point we were discussing if Phil's soon to be win would put him on par with Tiger as the best of that generation... I don't recall that particular conversation ever coming up again.

I don't disagree. I seem to remember even at the time before he teed it up, the announcer saying something like just hit an iron into the fairway and win the tournament. I do remember his driver was a mess that entire day. I'm not sure he hit any fairways. Even so, knocking it off the tent is one of the only "Non-Tiger", "Non-Jack" moments I can remember clearly as I watched it occur live. The other one was Tom Watson's chip in on 17 in 1982. (Although, you could argue that was a moment which DID involve Jack.)
