Your view on Seniors

Opinions on Seniors

  1. 1. What do you think of seniors on the course?

    • Old, slow, poor players, opinionated - mostly a pain!

I've noticed a bit of controversy concerning attitudes towards Seniors (those over 55).

I contend that seniors have a lot to contribute to the game not only in terms of their overwhelming participation rates, but also in relation to the traditional values of sportsmanship, integrity, and courtesy.

Your opinion?

55 might be a senior at McDonald's. Not on the golf course.

I use old Taylor Made clubs from eBay and golf shops.

The poll choices seem odd. But okay…

I don't believe so much in the separation of values between people of different generations. You'll see the same spread of inconsiderate jerks, cheats, dumb-asses, and genuinely nice people across all age brackets.

Where did you notice this "controversy"? Where did it come from?

Seniors have just as much right to be on a course a any age group. Probably more.

I didn't answer the poll, since I am a senior, and I can't imagine that I have ever given anyone any reason to single me out, not now, nor before I qualified as a senior.  I'm damn sure not slow, nor do I feel that I'm unpleasant to play with.  I'm not sure where the OP got his ideas from.

I got a laugh out of 1and 2. I play with a men's group that meets Monday weds and Friday. Ages range from 40's to 80 with most 65 +. Most of us walk.As a rule if there's a 3 some of younger guys in front of us we are usually on their butts the whole way around.

An exec course I play is surrounded by 55+ communities. The old guys have no problem keeping pace, walking.

I live in a retirement community, we have 7 golf courses, one of them is an 18 hole executive, the other six are full 72 par courses. I've played many rounds with seniors, most hit their balls straight down the fairway a good percentage of the time. They always keep pace, and a lot of them are the reason youngsters enjoy their freedoms. I would say tread lightly with seniors on the links.

as for driving cars, well that's a different animal altogether

The beauty of golf is it can be enjoyed and performed on the same course by people from little kids to very senior. What other sport can boast that? We've created tees for various abilities and playing lengths, a handicap system so all can compete against each other and added carts so those who have trouble walking can keep pace. It is a perfect sport for lifetime enjoyment.

I enjoy playing with folks other or younger than me. I agree with others that "jerks" come in all age brackets. Luckily I have rarely encountered them in my group.

The course I regularly played is very popular with seniors - during the daytime, it's just about all seniors.  I don't know what they have or could contribute to the game .. but I sure hope I'm having as good a time as them when I retire!

Pretty sure if the powers that be ran off all the seniors, the green fees would not be affordable to the youngsters. 

I would still like to read where this controversy started.

      Day 38 (18 Dec 25) - got out in the backyard with grandson this afternoon.  We got into a little game of pitching the ball from about 25yds to a target point just off the asphalt lane behind the backyard.  Goal - just clear it with a quick hop and stop.  Focused on using the wedge swing motion I was talking with the course pro yesterday….smooth and thru just bruising the grass.  In addition to a concentrated focus on technique, it also called for a quiet mind locked in on target point.  Rehearsed this with both the 50° and 55° wedges.

      I listened to the Shaun Webb one about the swing coach app. Sounds like a great thing and will (hopefully) be very useful for me. I do think the hosts are underestimating where AI could be in a few years. Right now it's just regurgitating stuff that it has been told or it has scrubbed from somewhere else and a human guiding things will be quite a lot more helpful than just the AI, but it's going to keep developing and it will reach the stage where it's figuring this stuff out on its own. Time will come when it will have you do a TPI style screen and take various height/arm length/leg length etc. measurements, have you tell it some history and your time constraints and goals and what not and it will watch a video of your swing face on and DTL and it will know exactly what you need to work on.

      I found it entertaining, but the announcing was lousy.  How did the measuring on the final shot start with Rory being closer and being told he won, and then with no explanation it turns out Scottie won?  Weird.

      Day 128 12-18 Worked on rotation and getting to lead side. Still working on the flow feeling while doing that. Recorded swings.

      IMO-the only thing entertaining was the relay race. Everything else was excruciatingly boring...or just  stupid, like the 14-club thing. Watching guys blade wedges into the water over and over is not at all interesting.
