to be a top level athelete you need to have a significant lack of self-awareness. You have to truly believe against all odds that you are better than everyone else. There is a level of delusion to it and you have to completely believe in it. To your point Fowler seems like the kind of guy who has a lot of self-awareness and is like a normal human being with the requisite doubts and realistic outlook.

It's called truly being a nice guy, he is a top level golfer/athlete.  To really win at those levels you have to hate to lose with a passion and enjoy beating other people (or maybe it's just me, that I fee that way about that level of play). I just feel at those levels many athletes are relatively equal and its that drive desire and passion which separates the true winners from the rest of the field. the killer instinct. Good post.

am I the only one who thinks that Kucher has an IQ of about 8?

If you wanna rag on Kuchar's intelligence, you gotta at least spell his name right to get full points. :-P  Was there a reason he bugged you today? Seems like a decent (and smart-enough) dude to me.

Couple screenshots I grabbed today at random times I could watch on my computer:

DJ hits out of a hazard after pulling his tee shot left. Nice A6.

Jason Day getting up and down from here for birdie on a par 5. As I recall the pin was on a thin little peninsula over there with the bulk of the green off to the left (again demonstrating that short game rules! :-D)

Oh sure, but just park the bus and wait. And when they run out of room for those parked buses, force the ones behind us to return to the mall.  There were people who boarded shuttle buses a half hour behind us who literally got onto the grounds an hour ahead of us.

Wow! That sounds like they have a screwed up transit system! Makes we wonder how many sites they have buses coming from. Hope you enjoy Saturday anyway.

There's not many things I like on Fox, but I do like Ken Brown. Seems like a goofy and funny guy and good guy you would love to hang out with and talk to. Hopefully NBC or CBS notices him and picks him up so he gets to cover more events.

I bumped into Ken Brown in a restaurant at Heathrow airport,I was a bit hesitant to approach him but I decided to go ahead and was glad I did. He's very approachable with the right manner,we talked about his co-commentator at the time,Alex Hay,Alex was very unwell at the time and has since died.

Yep,Ken Brown,good egg.

Well, that just means that the tube will be tuned to Fox at 11AM, I'll go out and do a little yard work, take a break and watch golf, do more yard work, watch more golf, etc! I have a tee time Sunday morning, but we'll be done in plenty of time to watch the finish, and I want the yard work to be finished as well!

Oh, I get Holly just fine! She's easy on the eyes and made more golf savvy comments today than Joe Buck did yesterday! Jeezaloo! That guy just does NOT know golf! However, I will give Fox credit for sticking with the telecast until 9PM tonight, when it was supposed to end at 8.

We'll see what the weekend brings.

I haven't heard anything about how the USGA plans to get the players out for the third round, but I'm guessing it's going to be threesomes off opposite tees starting around 3:00, and get as many rounds completed as possible before dark?

Pretty amazing that Spieth moved 27 spots up the leaderboard without taking a swing.  Ended his 1st round at #51, starting 2nd round at #24.  Should be a fun yet gut-wrenching day.

There's that dangerous Oosthuizen again. He did this last year. Was left for dead and then just started sprinting up the leaderboard. He's like a race horse that is 30 lengths back early on in the race and then just catches fire and starts passing everyone.

Ouch. An obvious thought though, given their histories. But don't all winners have a horror story? At least one.

There are some Englishman who are pompous asses (cough Poulter) and there's some I like. Danny Willett is rounding into my like column. Just seems like a happy go lucky guy with a good sense of humor. Seems like a good guy to talk to and get to know.

    • Never practiced golf when I was young and the only lesson ever taken was a driver lesson. I feel like I'm improving every year. However, the numbers don't support my feeling about improving. I usually drop to 12-13 during the summer while playing the familiar courses around home and then go on golf trips in the fall to new courses and increase to end the year between 15-17. Been a similar story for a number of years now but hey, it's the best thing there is in life so not too bothered but reaching 9.9 is the objective every year. Maybe a few lessons and practice could help me achieve it since I pretty much have no idea what I'm doing, just playing and never practice.
    • I am semi-loyal. Usually buy four dozen of one ball and only play that until out and then determine whether to continue or try another one. Since starting my semi-loyal path to success, I've been playing the below, not in order: ProV1 ProV1x ProV1x left dash AVX Bridgestone BXS Srixon Z-star XV I am not sure if it has helped anything, but it gives a bit of confidence knowing that it at least is not the ball (while using the same one) that gives different results so one thing less to mind about I guess. On the level that I am, not sure whether it makes much difference but will continue since I have to play something so might as well go with the same ball for a number of rounds. Edit: favorite is probably the BXS followed by ProV1/Srixon Z-star XV. Haven't got any numbers to back it up but just by feel.
    • Will not do it by myself, going to the pro shop I usually use after Cristmas for input and actually doing the changes, if any, but wanted to get some thoughts on whether this was worthwhile out of curiosity.
    • In terms of ball striking, not really. Ball striking being how good you are at hitting the center of the clubface with the swing path you want and the loft you want to present at impact.  In terms of getting better launch conditions for the current swing you have, it is debatable.  It depends on how you swing and what your current launch conditions are at. These are fine tuning mechanisms not significant changes. They might not even be the correct fine tuning you need. I would go spend the $100 to $150 dollars in getting a club fitting over potentially wasting money on changes that ChatGPT gave you.  New grips are important. Yes, it can affect swing weight, but it is personal preference. Swing weight is just one component.  Overall weight effects the feel. The type of golf shaft effects the feel of the club in the swing. Swing weight effects the feel. You can add so much extra weight to get the swing weight correct and it will feel completely different because the total weight went up. Imagine swinging a 5lb stick versus a 15lb stick. They could be balanced the same (swing weight), but one will take substantially more effort to move.  I would almost say swing weight is an old school way of fitting clubs. Now, with launch monitors, you could just fit the golfer. You could have two golfers with the same swing speed that want completely different swing weight. It is just personal preference. You can only tell that by swinging a golf club.
    • Thanks for the comments. I fully understand that these changes won't make any big difference compared to getting a flawless swing but looking to give myself the best chance of success at where I am and hopefully lessons will improve the swing along the way. Can these changes make minor improvements to ball striking and misses then that's fine. From what I understood about changing the grips, which is to avoid them slipping in warm and humid conditions, is that it will affect the swing weight since midsize are heavier than regular and so therefore adding weight to the club head would be required to avoid a change of feel in the club compared to before?
