So he posts a video of hisΒ swing over the years, then lets it be known he played 1 round last year and then the "wat?" ensues. I kind of did the same thing last year andΒ can see where he's coming from, so far be it from me to judge. Who are we to say how golf should be enjoyed, yes?

Kill slow play. Allow walking. Reduce ineffective golf instruction. Use environmentally friendly course maintenance.

Weird. Β I could see a person who used to play golf a lot and then just developed into a swing tinkerer ... but just to become obsessed with a good swing as a beginner and never really play? Β That's strange. Β But, to each his own.

There are people out there like that. They aren't really interested in playing golf, just "mastering" the golf swing.

There used to be a guy here who'sΒ sole purpose was to swing like Hogan. I'm not really sure he played much golf either.

For 99% of us all golf will ever be is a hobby. His (and likely many others) hobby is hitting balls at the range. Totally fine in my opinion.Β

Folks should click on the link and read the comments. Really really interesting.Β

I've had ranger Rick phases in my past, like most, but that's all this guy was ever interested in. Cool.Β

Fascinating and thanks OP for sharing.

Β They use the term "range rat" in the reddit comments. There are guys at my local range that seem like maybe this is their thing. I mean they are always there so I just wondered...

And I agree if you enjoy it what's the harm.

I have been the same way for a long time - all practice, (almost) no play.Β  I didn't start that way, though.Β  I started the opposite way.Β  One day I got disgusted with how much I suck at golf and decided I wasn't going to play again until I was at least a little better at it.Β  Then I found I got really into practice - more than playing.Β  It's just so easy to go hit 50 balls in the garage or a bucket at the range and it's such a monumental pain in the butt to try to get 5-6 hours free to play a round . .especially since (and I do think this is weird but it is what it is) I know absolutely NOBODY who plays golf . .except maybe once a year, etc.Β Β

BUT . .I realized that my swing in practice or on the range is one thing and my swing on the course is quite another.Β  Even if all you want is a "perfect swing" (or the best that you can do) . .I think you have to play actual golf in order to get it.Β  At least that's where I'm at . .I've run out my practice to the point where I feel like I NEED to go play in order to keep improving . . .Β Β

Β

edit . .and while my swing today might not look as good as this guy'sΒ  . .my starting place was way worse, lol.Β  Anybody notice his first swings actually showed some promise . .I thought, anyway.Β

Nice swing. I wonder if he's going to start playing at some point or continue to hit range balls.

I know this might trend a little OT (or maybe not) but I find hitting an executive is a better solution to the practice swing vs course swing dilemma. Β You play real golf and it doesn't take as much time.

I haven't had a chance to read the comments but as for him being a "range rat" I see nothing wrong with that.

"Playing" golf takes a lot of freaking time and energy. A lot of folks schedules can't accommodate a regular playing frequency (or any).

If he likes to go out to the range and hit balls for that nice ball flight feel. More power to him. But with a nice swing I hope he never tried to shake an "I'm probably about an X handicap with my swing" in conversation with anyone. Because that would be absurd lol. Especially with how much time he's spent at the range he would probably shoot a very high score for a while.

I see where he is coming from with the 'golf is boring' thoughts. When I played at 'fancy' courses I was always waiting. Rounds would take 5-6 hours. It was ridiculous. Almost an entire day on the weekend burned to hit 75 golf shots.

Now I play an 'executive' course where I can play 27Β holes by myself in about 1.5 hours. The course is a mix of half par 3s and half par 4s, with one par 5 (that is really just a 460 yard par 4). Golf has become much more fun. My Monday night foursome can play 18 holes in 3 hours. I don't have to leave work early and we rarely wait for anyone in front of us.

I think this guy should get a simulator. This is what I am contemplating doing. Then I can play rounds of golf much more frequently than I do now. Perhaps 3 or 4 rounds a week on the simulator, then one round a week on the 'big boys' courses to keep a handicap.

Yea, and oddly enough, it looks like he took my advice on his swing thread to heart.Β

But it looks like he built a really nice swing for himself on his own in the last few years. Good for him.Β It's funny how he says he finds the actual game of golf "boring," but if this is how he enjoys experiencing the game, that's cool with me.Β

In Korea, new players typically spend a year or more on the range or something before it's "acceptable" for them to play an actual round of golf, and it seems like this guy more or less is indirectly doing something like that. If he ever did want to play regularly, I'm sure he'd learn how to score more quickly than your typical beginner obviously, given how solid his swing appears to be now.Β It's possibly less frustrating to learn the gameΒ this way in some ways.

I know i guy like that, from England originally.Β He plays golf maybe once or twice a year, but hits balls on the range and tries to perfect his ball strikingΒ almostΒ every day. Even in terrible weather. I think he just enjoys hitting golf balls, not so much playing the game.Β
