So, this is slightly off topic, but I've been working on something new for my 40-50 yd. shots.   I saw a little tip on the golf channel and it has been working like a charm at the range.

Im hitting a sw, playing the ball in the middle of my stance and opening the face slightly, but swinging very flat and from the inside.

When end you are doing it right, there is no divot at all, just the bounce of the club.

I love this because it gets the ball up quickly, there is very little opportunity to chunk a shot, and, I feel like there is a ton of distance control.

Yep; the flop shot. Essentially you're turning your sand wedge into a 64* high-bounce lob wedge. It works well for me from thicker lies like sand and dense rough (obviously from sand I'm not getting nor wanting 40-50 yards); not so great for picking the ball off a dry fairway. For that I just have to trust my gap wedge with a 9 or 10 o-clock pitch swing; I'd add a low-bounce 60* to my bag if I could find a good one (and if I wasn't paying more attention to upgrading the two wedges I play now).

78 yards is a soft 60˚.  I used to have a ton of trouble with these kind of tweener shots, between full swing and totally different pitch style shot (I can use that up to 50-60 yards with my 60˚).  But over the years I've gotten more comfortable with it and while I wouldn't say I'm a distance sniper in that range or anything, I'm pretty confident I can at least give myself a makable 2-putt spot from that distance.  At least more often than not :-P

For me thats a half swing 50degree. Or a full swing chip with a PW

After a week of practicing this yardage I have come to the conclusion I prefer to avoid laying up to this yardage   Anything at the 60-90 yards is uncomfortable for me as it wrecks the rhythm of my full swing and not close enough to feel comfortable chipping or flopping from

You're quite likely wrong about that… you probably still hit the ball closer from 65 yards than you do from 95 yards.

Maybe you're the exception, but given the number of people we've put to this test, you're probably not.

I rather lay up to 95-110 and make a full swing than end up at 78 yards

Like I said I'm more confident of full swing than attempt a 3/4 and mishhit it.

I could just copy and paste the same response.

Odds are you aren't one of the exceptions.

Keep practicing the flighted swings. Soon it will feel very comfortable and your preference may change. I find a 3/4 swing makes better contact. Keep in mind that the downswing is still full speed. Only the backswing is shorter.

I sometimes start my range sessions with 1/2 and 3/4 swings just to warm up.

78 yards is a tweener yardage...but I'm still hitting the green more often from that distance than 100+.

hard to say without standing there on the course.  but its going to most likely be some kind of flighted partial swing wedge.  somewhere between pw and sw.

i can get a full lw there.  but not a fan of full swings with wedges

I'd pull my 55* SW out of the bag most of the time for this shot.

52 wedge and swing verticle to verticle with the only thought being turn my belly button toward the hole. Maybe it's a buddha shot?

    • Back in my Army days a "gooch" was a particular part of the anatomy. Example, say Okeechobee is the b-hole of Florida, then Belle Glade would be the gooch. Seems he wears his name well.
    • I can't say that I remember a lot of individual putts, but I do have one specific memory.  The first time I played the Old Course, I had hit a pretty good drive on the 6th hole.  I had about 60 yards left, and due to the swale in front of the green, there was no chance of flying a wedge on or near the green and having it stop on the green.  My caddie recommended either a running 7-iron chip or a putt, and I took the putter and a pretty hard swing.  The ball rolled over humps and through hollows, disappeared into the swale in front of the green, and re-appeared heading right at the hole.  I ended up maybe 12 feet away.  The caddie turned and held out his hand to shake mine, and said "Now THAT was a golf shot!"
    • For the first time since 2021, I made a 3 on the 12th at Stoneleigh.    395 yards, something like 80 feet uphill, I hit a solid drive and a 7-wood to inside a foot.  Even I couldn't miss that one.  I feel like I haven't played a lot of golf this year, but I'm making decent progress.
