Good on 'em. Muirfield deserve all the bad press they get until they allow female members

I like it.

Of course, unlike the club, they have no legal means of enforcing it.* :-)

* I'm assuming it's a public bench somewhere, and they're making a point (and doing so rather well, IMO), but… yeah, still no legal right to do so. If my assumptions are right.

Funny.  Let's see what happens.

"A bench in Edinburgh’s West Princes Street Gardens in the city center suddenly appeared with a plaque that read: “The members of Muirfield Golf Club are hereby excluded from sitting on this bench. By the order of the female population.”

Muirfeld is well within their rights to not have a female member...and everyone else is well within theirs to ridicule them for that decision.  I enjoy a creative, justified public shaming every once in a while.

Not so many years ago in Norfolk Virginia...."Dogs and Sailors, keep off the grass".

actually, that is only rumored fiction. No concrete evidence it actually occured other than occasional pranks. Same could be said for San Diego, and outside Camp Pendleton.

Are these people are taking a principled stand against all single-gendered clubs and other institutions or is this just singling out one particular group because they have a high profile golf course and happen to be male. There are surely just as many female-only operations as male-only. If women should join Murfield, should I be able to join Curves or go to school at Mt. Saint Mary's?

No.  But you can put a sign up on a public bench stating "no Curves members are allowed to sit on this bench".....

I'm sure they are singling out a high-profile group just like Martha Burk did at Augusta years back.  They are drawing attention to what they perceive is an unjust or wrong set of rules (or just one rule) at a private institution.  The institution has the choice to keep those rules or change them.

You are welcome to protest outside of Curves or Mt. Saint Mary's if you like as well.  You may not get the public response or backing that you like.  :-)

Ugh. Protesting outside. Do you know how cold it is out there? (Of course not, you are in NC). I actually like @14ledo81's idea of posting my own signs on public property.  The only problem with that is the literacy rate isn't that high around the Dayton area.

Ahhh...but I grew up in the snow belt of Erie, PA @mcanadiens.  I know just how cold it is out there.  I give @iacas grief about the weather I left behind and he "enjoys".  I'm going :offtopic: now.

If I were lucky enough to be a member of The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, I'd definitely sit there.  Of course, I'll never get invited to become a member, but I'd sit there anyway.  But really, if you're going to try to shame someone, shouldn't you get the name of the organization right?
