Some of the best values are direct-to-consumer manufacturers. like the Snell and the Kirkland balls.  I'll probably be buying a bunch of Snell MTBs this spring, at something like $27 a dozen.

Seconded on the direct-to-consumer...if I were going to play with new golf balls, I'd go with the Snell MTB's (or, perhaps, balls from Vice Golf).

For now, I get all of my golf balls from LostGolfBalls.com.  I get the "like-new" condition versions of the balls that I like to play (Hex Chrome for now, formerly Bridgestone E6) for about $1 each.  For me, at least, they're indistinguishable from new balls, and I don't feel badly about losing them or using a dozen for pitching practice.

I agree. Love snell mtb. Click the snell add that cycles through on top of the page to get to their site and order to help support tst.

I've been fortunate but I'm about 1 hour away from Golfsmith and Carl's Golfland.   I have also found golfballs online cheaply.

Craigslist is a good source for me. I just bought 5 dozen ProV1 for $160. People get them or win them and sell them instead. Sometimes they have logos, but that doesn't bother me.

Yes, an echo. I just received my first dozen Snell Get Sums. Dean signs each invoice they pack with the shipments, which was a nice touch. I'm looking forward to trying these balls as my game, apparently, is a two-piece-ball affair. A few friends of mine work at the local Costcos so I've been joking with them to bring me a box or two. Typically, I've just meandered through the local golf super shop and made an educated guess selecting a box of these or those. I did stumble upon the Taylormade line doing that and have played those a bit this last year.

Custom fit RBZ irons. Taylormade RBZ driver. Some crappy old high-bounce Macgregor wedge and an even older Mizuno 5 wood. Haven't settled on a ball yet - still looking. Decades of football, weightlifting and boxing came together to create the world's worst golfer. I'm slowly correcting that now.

I happen to be a fan of the Gamer Soft and Maxfli Softfli and I live near a Dicks.  If I played a tour ball I would follow some of the advice above.  I also make a point to buy at least a couple of dozen balls in sleeves from my pro shop - it gives me a chance to test some different balls and also helps support the pro.

lostgolfballs.com. No brainer for me.  Get the second to highest quality which look new and perform great.  Some may have logos on them but whatever.  I have bought different brands on there with zero complaints.  Club just put new greens in so I need to test different balls to see which performs best and then I am ordering a bucket of them.

4A rating is probably the best value, but I think the couple extra bucks for 5A condition is worth it knowing that the whole set is essentially a new box of balls.  I don't mind the logos either but one of the Bridgestones I just got has the guy's kids' names on it....yeah, I'm not going to touch any other ball until that one is lost.

    • Last year I made an excel that can easily measure with my own SG data the average score for each club of the tee. Even the difference in score if you aim more left or right with the same club. I like it because it can be tweaked to account for different kind of rough, trees, hazards, greens etc.     As an example, On Par 5's that you have fescue on both sides were you can count them as a water hazard (penalty or punch out sideways), unless 3 wood or hybrid lands in a wider area between the fescue you should always hit driver. With a shorter club you are going to hit a couple less balls in the fescue than driver but you are not going to offset the fact that 100% of the shots are going to be played 30 or more yards longer. Here is a 560 par 5. Driver distance 280 yards total, 3 wood 250, hybrid 220. Distance between fescue is 30 yards (pretty tight). Dispersion for Driver is 62 yards. 56 for 3 wood and 49 for hybrid. Aiming of course at the middle of the fairway (20 yards wide) with driver you are going to hit 34% of balls on the fescue (17% left/17% right). 48% to the fairway and the rest to the rough.  The average score is going to be around 5.14. Looking at the result with 3 wood and hybrid you are going to hit less balls in the fescue but because of having longer 2nd shots you are going to score slightly worst. 5.17 and 5.25 respectively.    Things changes when the fescue is taller and you are probably going to loose the ball so changing the penalty of hitting there playing a 3 wood or hybrid gives a better score in the hole.  Off course 30 yards between penalty hazards is way to small. You normally have 60 or more, in that cases the score is going to be more close to 5 and been the Driver the weapon of choice.  The point is to see that no matter how tight the hole is, depending on the hole sometimes Driver is the play and sometimes 6 irons is the play. Is easy to see that on easy holes, but holes like this:  you need to crunch the numbers to find the best strategy.
    • Very much so. I think the intimidation factor that a lot of people feel playing against someone who's actually very good is significant. I know that Winged Foot pride themselves on the strength of the club. I think they have something like 40-50 players who are plus something. Club championships there are pretty competitive. Can't imagine Oakmont isn't similar. The more I think about this, the more likely it seems that this club is legit. Winning also breeds confidence and I'm sure the other clubs when they play this one are expecting to lose - that can easily become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
    • Ah ok I misunderstood. But you did bring to light an oversight on my part.
    • I was agreeing with you/jumping off from there.
