I for myself almost always walk. Some lbs to much. So it can't be wrong to walk instead of taking it the easy way and the cart.

Also, driving would take away something from me. Golf is a sport in the end and driving around the course just don't fit my definition of sports.

How do you take it?

Eh, I don't think golf is a sport, so it's kinda besides the point lol

Reasons why an otherwise healthy young person might take a cart instead of walking:

  • Their friends are all taking carts.
  • They want to carry more things (a six pack, a FlightScope, a bunch of layers) than is comfortable to do while walking.
  • They want to get more holes in (I can play faster in a cart even on cart path only days than I can walking) and/or they are limited in how much time they have to play and can only play if they drive/ride.
  • It's hot. Or cold. Or going to rain.
  • The green fee includes it.
  • The course requires it.
  • They're not as healthy as they look in a non-obvious way (they sprained their knee recently, they have a heart transplant like my friend, whatever).
  • They've always ridden in a cart.
  • They enjoy riding in or driving a cart.
  • They have an important athletic event later (a MLB manager in the 90s, IIRC, let his pitchers play as much golf as they wanted so long as they rode in carts so their legs could stay fresh).
  • They want to use the cart's GPS system.
  • They don't have a stand bag and/or a push cart.

The list is longer than that, too. Sorry, I'm not going to judge the people for those things. Like I said, I prefer to walk most of the time, but not all the time. The times I'm in a cart don't make me less of a golfer.

I love to walk when playing, but I enjoy riding occasionally as well. I feel like I’ve gotten to know my course a lot better by walking 50+ rounds. When I played 36 holes last month, I played the first round with a few teammates. We stopped at the turn to get a quick bite to eat, and they insisted I ride the back since I had another eighteen holes to play after that, which I was totally ok with. Either one is fine with me, but if I choose, I’d prefer walking.

I prefer to walk.  But my favorite course, and also where most of my friends play, has lots of 100' elevation changes, so I am happy to take a cart.  But the muni close to my house where I practice alot and zip around 9 or 18 with a push cart while walking/running (the running part seems to be frowned upon by my friends) is my choice for 3-4 days a week.  But because of my elbow injury I have not done the walking/running thing for 7 months.  And have gained 8 pounds on my 5' 10", 165 pound frame.

🤣🤣 When I take my pushcart out (I'm 50/50 pushcart or carry) I like to jog to my ball, especially on uphill holes. One time the group in front of me took offense to this because they thought I was trying to pressure them to play faster. At one point in the middle of the round when I was waiting to play my approach, one of the twosomes drove back down the fairway in their cart (no judgement, just a fact of the event) to confront me about this. I thought it was pretty silly. I told them to go enjoy their round of golf and leave me alone to enjoy mine, and they left.

They did play faster after that, which was nice, but they weren't slowing down my group anyways.

Mr. Frog... good for you for jogging to your ball.  Screw my friends (love 'em) but I will continue running.  I am healthier than they are and outdrive them by 30-40 yards...

@iacas the only point I don't like is "too cold". Rounds are unbearable when its under 40 F if you are riding, but walking them feels a-okay

@iacas kind of addressed it, but I would call it more overall injuries suffered when young.  I was a really good athlete back in the day, but, after caving in my right knee for the third time, I needed surgery. The ACL reconstruction surgical technique had just been developed. So, I went in for that. I have a suture scar close to a foot and a half long on the inside of my right leg!

But, after rehab, I went right back to walking and carrying. When you're young, you can do anything. But, after some years, my knee started to let me know that it did not like that anymore! So, I bought a pull cart and used it. Problem solved! At least for a while.

Eventually, walking 18 holes with a pull cart came to be a burden. This is the progression of injury. Things don't get better, they only get worse!

Not if you have a heater in your cart.

I prefer to walk. But will ride if the green fee includes cart or if my friends ride.

I used to love to walk.  But now, on the north side of 60, with 5 knee surgeries behind me, I am now relegated to carts.

I prefer to walk, I feel get more into my round when I walk.  My home course is a good walk as well.  I will ride if it’s an event or playing a golf course isn’t walkable, where it makes more sense to ride.

As a rule of thumb I tend to walk.  I have a 2 wheeled cart and am OK to push it and play without a caddie.  The only courses I would prefer to have a cart is one where there are a lot of steep uphills.  I find it more tiring to climb than it should be.  I suppose being unfit and time catching up to me has that effect.

I have never objected to a cart but rarely see a need to pay separately for that.  If it is built into the green fee or is mandatory, I will use the cart.  Of course carts tend to be quicker and less exhausting so that is a big plus.

Just walked 18. The pace was perfect. 4 hours to walk.  I was worried I would hold people up, but my group was walking, and so were the people behind us. Really worked out well. Being able to walk is a total game changer. 5 mile walk makes it feel like less of a huge waste of time, LOL.  Carrying my bag for 18 started to get uncomfortable on my shoulder, and a bit clumsy, so I will invest in a push cart.  I like the idea of walking 9 as a way to go for a nice hike.

    • Day 470 - 2026-01-13 Got some work in while some players were using the sim, so I had to stick around. 🙂 Good thing too, since… I hadn't yet practiced today until about 6:45 tonight. 😛
    • That's not quite the same thing as what some people messaged me today.
    • Day 152 1-12 More reps bowing wrists in downswing. Still pausing at the top. Making sure to get to lead side and getting the ball to go left. Slow progress is better than no progress.
    • Yea, if I were to make a post arguing against the heat map concept, citing some recent robot testing would be my first point. The heat map concept is what I find interesting, more on that below. The robot testing I have looked at, including the one you linked, do discreet point testing then provide that discrete data in various forms. Which as you said is old as the hills, if you know of any other heat map concept type testing, I would be interested in links to that though! No, and I did say in my first post "if this heat map data is valid and reliable" meaning I have my reservations as well. Heck beyond reservations. I have some fairly strong suspicions there are flaws. But all I have are hunches and guesses, if anyone has data to share, I would be interested to see it.  My background is I quit golfing about 9 years ago and have been toying with the idea of returning. So far that has been limited to a dozen range sessions in late Summer through Fall when the range closed. Then primarily hitting foam balls indoors using a swing speed monitor as feedback. Between the range closing and the snow flying I did buy an R10 and hit a few balls into a backyard net. The heat map concept is a graphical representation of efficiency (smash factor) loss mapped onto the face of the club. As I understand it to make the representation agnostic to swing speed or other golfer specific swing characteristics. It is more a graphical tool not a data tool. The areas are labeled numerically in discrete 1% increments while the raw data is changing at ~0.0017%/mm and these changes are represented as subtle changes in color across those discrete areas. The only data we care about in terms of the heat map is the 1.3 to 1.24 SF loss and where was the strike location on the face - 16mm heal and 5mm low. From the video the SF loss is 4.6% looking up 16mm heal and 5mm low on the heat map it is on the edge of where the map changes from 3% loss to 4%. For that data point in the video, 16mm heal, 5mm low, 71.3 mph swing speed (reference was 71.4 mph), the distance loss was 7.2% or 9 yards, 125 reference distance down to 116. However, distance loss is not part of a heat map discussion. Distance loss will be specific to the golfers swing characteristics not the club. What I was trying to convey was that I do not have enough information to determine good or bad. Are the two systems referencing strike location the same? How accurate are the two systems in measuring even if they are referencing from the same location? What variation might have been introduced by the club delivery on the shot I picked vs the reference set of shots? However, based on the data I do have and making some assumptions and guesses the results seem ok, within reason, a good place to start from and possibly refine. I do not see what is wrong with 70mph 7 iron, although that is one of my other areas of questioning. The title of the video has slow swing speed in all caps, and it seems like the videos I watch define 7i slow, medium, and fast as 70, 80, and 90. The whole question of mid iron swing speed and the implications for a players game and equipment choices is of interest to me as (according to my swing speed meter) over my ~decade break I lost 30mph swing speed on mine.
    • Maxfli, Maltby, Golfworks, all under the Dicks/Golf Galaxy umbrella... it's all a bit confounding. Looking at the pictures, they all look very, very similar in their design. I suspect they're the same club, manufactured in the same factory in China, just with different badging.  The whacky pricing structure has soured me, so I'll just cool my heels a bit. The new Mizuno's will be available to test very soon. I'm in no rush.
