Im missing something here - didn't she still win the LPGA version of the playoffs? Why does a missed putt mean she doesn't win POY?

She won the "race" and the $1M but didn't win player of the year. She would have won all three awards (the Vare being the third) with a win, but only got two (Race, Vare).

Thompson went to No. 18 leading by one and was on the green of the 425-yard par 4 in regulation. From 60 feet after reading the putt with caddie Kevin McAlpine, she lagged beautifully, cozying her ball two feet left of the hole. So little was left that if Thompson hadn't been worried about stepping in the lines of fellow competitors Austin Ernst and Jessica Korda, she said she would have putted instead of marking.

A comment on Geoff's site:

Now we understand why she would do a cheat-by-marker on a two-foot putt. It wasn’t a mistake, it was a subconscious move by someone who knows she has a potential yip on a short one at any given moment.

Hmmmmmmmm.

Also, between this and the ANA, she lost four points (one for winning the tournament, one for Player of the Year) toward the Hall of Fame.

Oh. I was thinking POY was a voted award like it was on the mens tour.

I think it's a points thing for the LPGA.

http://www.lpga.com/statistics/points/rolex-player-of-the-year

First place 30 points, second place 12. She lost out by three points, 162 (and 162) to 159. (She still would have had to win a playoff if she had made the putt and Ariya had made hers too.)

@Golfingdad, as you know, he said "2-3 rotations." And the pixel math was on an angle that would make it as short as possible. And when you're talking about 10.56" vs. at least 18", that's a significant margin. Even 15.8 vs. 18" is a non-negligible percentage.

But since you brought it up (while I happened to be in front of the TV):

1472.08 ball to hole, 263.62 width of the hole.
263.62 / 4.25 = 62.02823529 pixels/inch.
1472.08 pixels / 62.02823529 px/in = 23.73241788 inches.

Almost exactly two feet.

It has been a tough year for Lexi.

Oddly enough, it was actually something of a career year that has unfortunately been overshadowed by a couple notable incidents. Two wins, three playoff losses (she had never been in a playoff before this season), no.1 in GIR... she finished second or T-2 a whopping seven times this year. She had five runner-ups in her career heading into 2017.

Her two wins tied her career high for wins in a season (2015). 1st in sand saves. 1st in scoring average. 1st in rounds in the 60s. Vare trophy, 1st in Race to CME or whatever it's called. Winning Solheim Cup team. It's amazing she can walk away from 2017 and feel like she left a lot out there. Shame too because she accomplished so much.

All I know is it is the length that most guys pick up and say it's good. I would never miss that length.

It was and if the two notable no-wins had been normal losses I'm sure she would see it as a great year, as it was.  But I know for most the two disappointments certainly kept it from being an exceptionally good year.  I would think this might weigh on her mind some over the off season. Who knows, maybe she will use these as motivation to have a even better year this coming season.

That took two minutes.

If I crop the hole and move it over I get about 5.5 hole widths. 5.5 x 4.25 = 23.375".

I'm not sure that is the same hole - shadow is on the wrong side of the cup & that yellow blemish on the other side of her shadow past the cup isn't in the video.

    • Day 237 (26 Dec 24) - played 18 with niece and her husband at one of the local courses.  We were first out - so we pretty had our own pace of play.  First few holes were a struggle, but the groove started by hole 5.  The green side wedge game kicked in - had several kick in up and down pars.  Best of the day - had my first ever sandie birdie on #9. It’s a neat par three with a pot hole bunker - found it off the tee.  Had about a 22yd shot from the bunker to the flag.  Hit an easy shot out with the 54 that hit softly and gently rolled center cup.  Had several other close wedge shots into others that were close but no hole out.  Was a great day with the green side wedge game - and seeing solid fruit from the drills.
