What's your "glass ceiling" that you just can't seem to break?

I've shot 79 twice, but it's been a few years.    This past year, I shot in the 80-84 slot 13 times ... just can't seem to break the glass ceiling & get back into the 70's.    It's starting to mess with my head ... just curious if anybody else has a "glass ceiling" that torments them.  Everybody says just hit another GIR, quit 3 putting lags or even make a 6 or 7 footer here and there and you'll be in the 70's ... problem is, my game is apparently fairly established and consistent, and those extra couple of good shots never seem to come ... oh well, at least I'm making most of the 3-4 footers as of late which used to be the bane of my golf.

Of course, I'd likely never expect to break par on a PGA course. :-D

Seriously though, if you play enough rounds you'll eventually break 80s again.

I wonder if this would be a good poll question. Maybe add a range of scores.

Shouldn't this question be a floor, not ceiling, golf is about scoring the lowest score possible. :-P

Tough to say really. Right now, better than scratch golf.

Bogey free rounds. I have one, but they are my white whale! I cannot tell you how many rounds I have had with only one bogey. I have shot 64, 65 a couple of times, 66 several times, and more 67s, 68s, and 69s, than I can count, and I only have one bogey free round of 69.

  • iacas changed the title to What's your "glass ceiling" that you just can't seem to break?

I’m a 10 index and I’ve never broken 80 on a par 72 from middle tees.  On a recent tournament round I shot 80 by doubling the par 5 18th after making two excellent long game shots :-(.  I have broken it several times when you apply ESC though.

Breaking par, on a full-size course from appropriate tees.

I've shot even par a number of times, and have broken par playing it way forward, but just haven't put it together for a real sub-par round.

Same as you. shoot 65(-7) the other day with one bogey. I never made a bogey free round. I think this is my next achivement and current glass ceiling.

More rounds below 75. I think probably 90% of my rounds were between 75-85 this year, but that other 10% was above 85. The last two years, I've thrown together a handful of rounds in the low 70s and think that I'll get back there quickly, but it hasn't happened. That's my next ceiling. Then it's breaking par.

You guys are suffering!  I want a double bogey free round!  I guess breaking into the 70's.  I feel like I could do it but it would be an anomaly at this point.  My goal would be to get the handicap into single digits.

Definitely getting into the 70's.  Actually... getting to 80 would be an accomplishment I've yet to reach.  Since March of 2016, I've got 17 rounds between 81 - 83 but I can't seem to crack that barrier.  One of my good golfing buddies who has a game very similar to mine has shot 79 twice this year (the first 2 times he's done it in his life).  I'm convinced that I CAN do it... I just haven't been able to yet.  Another friend of mine who regularly shoots 90+ shot a 78 earlier this year as well (and I believe he's got 5 or 6 sub-80 rounds under his belt in his life).

I've focused on not counting my scores up until the end... but I subconsciously know when I'm at or near the 80 mark.  It's gonna happen... I've just got to buckle down and focus on making better decisions.

Nothing about my golf game torments me. Anytime I am playing golf, or even practicing I am a happy camper.  I don't even let other golfers' play, or other suspect antics bother me.

As for my "glass ceiling" I always go out with a target number of 80 in my head, which I will sometimes adjust higher depending on poor course, and/or weather conditions. Most times I am 2 or 3 strokes higher, but every once in a while I will sneak in a 78, or 79. My best, true score in 2017 was a 75. (+3).

My low round is 76, so score isn't my ceiling yet... Consistently hitting 9 of 18 GIRs or more is mine. I'd like to average 9. But right now, it's closer to 6... Just need to work on my iron play more I think.

This is me. No doubles. Complete the no sixes challenge. If I could do this, my handicap would fall as would my scores. I recently had a round with 3 birdies and still shot 85. I hit a lot of decent golf shots.

The no sixes/no doubles is the hardest for me. I should never have a double on the courses I play. Both of the courses I frequent have at least one par 5 that six is not a terrible score for me. I feel like I should make 5, but I do have to hit on all cylinders to do so.

65 seems to be the glass wall for me. Ive gotten close several times and i have the typical "double bogey on the last" story to go with it, but I've never broken 65. Id like to do it once before i croak, but i haven't shot lower than 68 in several years now. I think i may have a 67 in there someplace. I cant remember.

Double on the last, I seem to have gotten over that.  I used to serve up some bad holes at the end when was trying to break into the 80's.  If I get near the 70's regularly I am sure it will come back!

This is not the proper term for what's wrong. A glass ceiling is an unfair external barrier that others put in our way to keep us from advancing. This is a civil rights issue.

Not breaking 80 is more self-inflicted, relating to problems internal to the golfer.

Focus, connect and follow through!

    • Day 12: Same as last couple days, but focus was on recentering aspect of flow. When I recenter earlier I make decent contact most swings but if I recenter late or not at all it’s a roll of the dice.
    • A couple of things.  Some of the clubs in your bag should be dropped immediately.  A 2-iron for example with what obviously seems to be a lower swing speed or possibly not great swing yet is a definite no-no.  To be hitting that 120-140 yards, which I assume includes run, is a sign that you are not getting the ball airborne at the correct angle to maximise distance.  The reason your 3 and 5 hybrid are going the same distance is that your launch angle is better with the 5.  Loft is your friend. Ideally I would suggest going to a golf or sporting store where you can hit golf balls on a simulator without being disturbed to understand your club carry distances and hopefully swing speed.  With that information we can definitely guide you better.
    • Let us be clear, unless you have proof of cheating, you just sound like a case of sour grapes.  In our club we have a guy who won club titles for many years.  Yes, he was a low single digit handicapper, but there have been quite a few others who played at his level.  Yet his mental strength and experience helped him win in many years when he shouldn't have.  Did he sandbag.  DEFINITELY NOT.  Did he just minimize his mistakes and pull out shots as and when needed.  Definitely.
    • Day 111 - Worked on my grip and higher hands in the backswing. Full swings with the PRGR.
    • First off please forgive me if this is not a proper post or not in the proper location, still learning the ropes around here. Second, it's important that I mention I am very new to the game with only about 10 rounds of golf under my belt, most being 9 holes. Only this year have I started playing 18. That being said, I am hooked, love the game and am very eager to learn and improve. To give you an idea of my skill, the last 2 18 rounds I played were 110 and 105. Not great at all, however I am slowly improving as I learn. Had been having bad slicing issues with the driver and hybrids but after playing some more and hitting the range, I've been able to improve on that quite a bit and have been hitting more straight on average. Irons have always come easier to me as far as hitting straight for some reason. Wedges have needed a lot of improvement, but I practice chipping about 20-30 mins about 3-5 times a week and that's helped a lot. Today I went to the range and started to note down some distance data, mind you I am averaging the distances based off my best guess compared to the distance markers on the range. I do not currently own a range finder or tracker. From reading some similar posts I do understand that filling gaps is ideal, but I am having a some issues figuring out those gaps and understanding which clubs to keep and remove as some gaps are minimal between clubs. Below is an image of the chart I put together showing the clubs and average distances I've been hitting and power applied. For some reason I am hitting my hybrids around the same distances and I am not sure why. Wondering if one of them should be removed. I didn't notice a huge loft difference either. The irons I have are hand me downs from my grandfather and after playing with them a bit, I feel like they're just not giving me what could potentially be there. The feel is a bit hard/harsh and underwhelming if that makes sense and I can't seem to get decent distances from them. Wondering if I should be looking to invest in some more updated irons and if those should be muscle backs or cavity backs? My knowledge here is minimal. I have never played with modern fairway woods, only the classic clubs that are actually wood and much smaller than modern clubs. I recently removed the 4 and 5 woods from my bag as I was never using them and I don't hit them very well or very far. Wondering if I should look into some more modern fairway wood options? I appreciate any feedback or advice anyone is willing to give, please forgive my lack of knowledge. I am eager to learn! Thank you.
