I don't know why, but number three seems totally wrong, which others have expressed. I don't know if it's a cultural thing or it's just objectively wrong.

If I made toast at home I never cut it.

If I get toast at a diner it is usually cut diagonally.

Number 1 is the only way toast should be cut.  Any other way should be considered illegal and the toast should be thrown out.

PS - I'm the same as @saevel25.  I don't cut toast when I make it at home.  I fold it in half and eat it that way.  My wife cuts toast and that's the reason I say number 1 is the only way.  That's the only way I've seen her cut it, ever.

Off center diagonal so a variation of #1, though the only toast I like is Sourdough. :)

Seemed like this needed a poll, so I added one.

I don't care how my toast is cut and often I'll get eggs at a diner without toast at all, but when I used to be a cook, I always cut toast the first way.

There are just two ways to cut loaf bread: f-style (1) and c-style (2).  Number 3 looks like c-style with different bread.  A grilled cheese sandwich should be cut f-style; particularly when served along side tomato soup.  In most other cases; the prey item (if any) and plating should be considered.

IDK, I guess it depends on how much strawberry jelly I have to work with. Plus, has to be sour dough.

Sadly, I do have a preference.  2.

Let's not get started on which way to hang the toilet paper though.  Some topics are way too controversial for this forum! ;-)

I’ve never had toast cut anything other than diagonally. OTOH, I probably scarf them down before I notice how they were cut anyway :-D

For whatever reason Women prefer under while Men prefer over.

Probably no controversy on this blog site.

I rarely make toast at home but if I do I use #1, just like most diners in my area.  Seems better for the first break and dip in an egg yolk.
