I just read an Olympic thread where someone turned off the central channel on surround sound and the commentators were muted. Does this work for golf? Has anyone with surround sound tried this? I still have my tv connected to my 30 yo receiver, so can't replicate.

My TVs all have a volume knob, and a mute button.  Seems simple.

Depends on how they mix the audio, @nevets88.

That was my initial thought to a similar thread a couple weeks ago.  But I do like hearing the sounds of the shots, ambient sounds, applause, ohs and ahs, etc.

Sometimes I think the European tour "sounds" better.

Ah, so I am not the only one who is sick of listening to the banter of a bunch of fool announcers who can't even get it right half the time.    The talking heads just have to bump their gums with inane comments constantly.

If you pull them too hard they come out.

If I look around the basement long enough, i might be able to fine one with knobs. And a separate tuner for all those UHF channels, 14 and higher.:ninja:

I hope this will become a standard feature in the future, but I'm a bit skeptical. Giving viewers the option to disable parts of the audio means it has to be sent in different channels and mixed somewhere before you hear it, with you having the option to remove parts of the mix at that point. This could mean more equipment or tools is needed (hardware and/or software), which lead to higher production cost. If there's no high demand for it and no upside for the channel, they may not have any reasons to provide the service.

Omg I know exactly what you're talking about. Some had a dial on the edge to fine tune the picture. Going from 14 to 47 was a pain.

Just deal with the announcers or put it on mute.

nonsense - it that works, GREAT!!!

if not, then your advice is spot on

pretty easy to test out with my setup (via the Bose controls, or just reach back and unplug the one speaker)

as for the old knobs - I think it was Bill Cosby that talked about the old family radio.  It had 100 knobs of which only two were functional - the on/off/volume, and the station selector......the rest were replacements for when a knob was pulled off and lost.

The sounds already ARE mixed into separate channels for those multichannel surround sound systems. Even your basic TV uses this info to tweak the audio. For example, many TV's allow you to fiddle with the mid range to bring out speech portion of the signal. I don't think there is one that will let you ENTIRELY get rid of it, but if you had the right surround sound system with the right controls available, you should be able to eliminate the commentary without losing the birds tweeting or other ambient noise.

What? That's the entire point of this thread. Being able to turn them off without muting, still getting the live audio from the course.
