Fan Ejected by Justin Thomas - Right, Wrong or Indifferent

Wondering what everyone's thoughts are on the fan ejection by Justin Thomas. Do you think he was right for doing so? Is this type of fan behavior a trend that could get out of hand?

I guess I'm a little iffy where I stand. Given the rowdy environments of some of the other tournaments, is it asking too much to have a little thicker skin out there? On the other hand, I can see the merit of preserving etiquette of the outing. It was just suggested on the Golf Channel to have a sort of Fan Code of Conduct, which might be a great idea on a per venue basis.

What are your thoughts?

I probably wouldn't have, but I don't have a problem with it.

I didn't hear exactly what he said, but apparently he was openly rooting against JT, asking for the ball to get into the bunker.  He didn't disrupt the swing, so its just a bit of poor form, instead of being totally obnoxious.  I suppose its kind of on the line, as opposed to way over the line.

Supposedly the hole before, or between holes, he said he hoped JT hit it in the water. Then after the tee shot was struck, he wished for it to go into the bunker.

I'm fine with JT kicking the guy out, but at the same time, now Europe knows he's got  pretty thin skin… Come Ryder Cup time, hmmm…

Nothing better to do than troll a PGA tour player? Pretty strange behavior, I wouldn't want that guy around.

JT did himself and everyone there a favor.

It makes a difference to me that the story says he did it for more than one hole. Maybe you ignore it if it's two holes but suppose the guy followed Thomas around for a significant number of holes?

I am a bit indifferent to the problem. I assume ejection means from the entire course. If so, then it seems like over kill as far as punishment goes. I would think just moving the heckler to another gallery would be sufficient for a first offense.  If the heckler continues to cause problems a second time, then toss him.

Way over-reaction, getting tossed for yelling for his ball to go in the trap.  I’d rather see someone get tossed out for yelling baba-booey81B92B45-98C1-4E97-AC14-A6620F2E5FF4.thumb.png.87da7f33a6f9643d0d37ff467bb7c300.png

Maybe JT should take this before the Ryder Cup.

Completely inappropriate to kick him out.  If yiu can't root against someone, why is it appropriate to root for someone he may be playing against?

Those are different things.

I root for, say, the Steelers. I don't root against the team they're playing against.

In the Ryder Cup, they say you can root for your team, but it's poor form to root for or cheer for bad shots by the other team.

I like JT, but this story made me like him a little less. I'm not condoning the troll of a fan but c'mon, you're a professional athlete making millions to play golf- grow a little thicker skin. If he was being disruptive during  shots then yea, throw him out, but that wasn't the case here.  Yes, golf is different and should be than other sports, but all other athletes have to deal with way worse from fans than this.

Something also rubs me the wrong way about the dictator style decision that the players are allowed to make in this case to toss a fan. Not saying that fans shouldn't get tossed from time to time, just that IMO there should probably be more defined regs as to when an ejection is warranted.

Remember the Ron Artest vs Detroit Pistons?  For years Golf has been a gentleman's game with honor and integrity.    Back in the day the gallery was quiet.   It didn't take long for beer to be introduced.....

nah...that's nonsense....Can't blame beer...   but then again Ron Artest vs. Detroit Pistons...

I think it was bad form but don't believe he should have been thrown out.

It’s poor form, and I would even say distasteful. However, I don’t think JT should have been able to throw him out over it. I agree that come Ryder Cup he may have a rough time of it.

    • First off please forgive me if this is not a proper post or not in the proper location, still learning the ropes around here. Second, it's important that I mention I am very new to the game with only about 10 rounds of golf under my belt, most being 9 holes. Only this year have I started playing 18. That being said, I am hooked, love the game and am very eager to learn and improve. To give you an idea of my skill, the last 2 18 rounds I played were 110 and 105. Not great at all, however I am slowly improving as I learn. Had been having bad slicing issues with the driver and hybrids but after playing some more and hitting the range, I've been able to improve on that quite a bit and have been hitting more straight on average. Irons have always come easier to me as far as hitting straight for some reason. Wedges have needed a lot of improvement, but I practice chipping about 20-30 mins about 3-5 times a week and that's helped a lot. Today I went to the range and started to note down some distance data, mind you I am averaging the distances based off my best guess compared to the distance markers on the range. I do not currently own a range finder or tracker. From reading some similar posts I do understand that filling gaps is ideal, but I am having a some issues figuring out those gaps and understanding which clubs to keep and remove as some gaps are minimal between clubs. Below is an image of the chart I put together showing the clubs and average distances I've been hitting and power applied. For some reason I am hitting my hybrids around the same distances and I am not sure why. Wondering if one of them should be removed. I didn't notice a huge loft difference either. The irons I have are hand me downs from my grandfather and after playing with them a bit, I feel like they're just not giving me what could potentially be there. The feel is a bit hard/harsh and underwhelming if that makes sense and I can't seem to get decent distances from them. Wondering if I should be looking to invest in some more updated irons and if those should be muscle backs or cavity backs? My knowledge here is minimal. I have never played with modern fairway woods, only the classic clubs that are actually wood and much smaller than modern clubs. I recently removed the 4 and 5 woods from my bag as I was never using them and I don't hit them very well or very far. Wondering if I should look into some more modern fairway wood options? I appreciate any feedback or advice anyone is willing to give, please forgive my lack of knowledge. I am eager to learn! Thank you.
    • I would think that 3 in a row with the same players might get some behind the scenes examination from the SCGA if they were suspect.  Are there any clubs questioning the results?
    • What simple fact? A golf match is not a coin flip — there is a fact for you. I'm trying to help you, and you're throwing out what could easily be called sour grapes. Come with FACTS, not weak analogies. Then you've got nothing. Hopefully they've done a better job of making their case. 😛
    • It's pretty close. The odds of a 50/50 shot going your way 21 times are greater than 1 in a million!  I guess your point is, that simple fact is not enough to declare these guys dirty rotten sandbaggers. I disagree, but fair enough. I posted it here on the message board to get different perspectives, after all.  I probably won't be digging further into specific scores. I have no dog in this fight beyond a generalized contempt for sandbagging. With that said, it would not surprise if a lot of clubs shared my concern and were grousing about it to the SCGA.
