He was already +5, nothing to lose. If he was a shot up or down from the lead, I wonder if he makes the same call. Of course to him I'm sure it looked wide open....these guys are good...….

He's a tour pro. They control their start lines well. Hell I'm a hack and I'm confident I could hit that window.

Yeah, I have threaded the needle a few times. It either works , or it don't.

It does look open enough to give it a go.  For me it would be situational.  Late in the round and bogey gets me a good score, I pitch out.  I need a par (or to win/ tie a hole with a thread the needle), I think I could make the shot and would try it.  And I would not let anyone stand behind me!! 😉

I made @coachjimsc play through a narrower gap with a 3W at the 2017 Newport Cup. 😉

You can bet your bottom MF dollar I am taking that shot.  2,000,000,000% certain.  Bad idea but I'm doing it.

I would definitely try it.  I've long had an intimate relationship with trees on the golf course.  If there is a shot that can be attempted, I've tried it, and sometimes with good success.

I did one like that from about 230 out with a 3W and with a smaller gap, and made birdie from what looked like a bogey or worse.  Okay, I admit that the first attempt I missed the gap and hit the left tree without killing myself.  Since I was so successful on the first try, I did it again, and put the second attempt one foot off the front of the green, and made the putt for birdie 4.

Those are the sort shots I remember best from my 45 year affair with golf, so I'll probably keep trying to pull them off until I can no longer swing a club.

Unless I can cruise in for the tournament win with a bogey (meaning I am 2 or 3 up already and it's the last hole), I'll go for it!

The trees are not that far in front, so the risk of hitting them is not that high. The risk of mishitting from the pine straw and not carrying the water is much higher than that of hitting a tree (and getting hit with the rebound). No matter, I'll go for it.

Yes, I saw a video of that shot in a link on a thread today. Great times.

I also played a similar shot in the Newport cup, the video of the tee shot that led to it is actually on the site. Hooked my tee shot into the trees on #12 and was down in the match (to @coachjimsc himself actually, I believe) so I had to try and get my second shot onto the green since he piped his drive down the middle.

The shot in the video isn't actually too tight, in terms of the gap he had, since the trees are so close to him. The further away they are the harder the shot becomes, since the angular measurement between the two trunks shrinks.

Really doesn’t look that outrageous.  Short iron and a pretty good-sized window.  No guarantee of course, but I’d expect to get it through there far more often than not...

Why not?  If you have a reasonably predictable start line for your shots (or azimuth), then you should go for it.  Controlling your shot window is a really good skill to work on.
