Does your Gap wedge match iron set or not?

I didn't know how to word the title so this will explain my question, then Mike and Erik can edit my terrible title if they choose.

I was just wondering, if TST Universe has their gap wedge matching their iron set or is it a "speciality" wedge?

I'd doing some research for when I pick up my SGI irons over the winter.. (I want more forgiveness) and with most companies in GI and SGI model going with 4-GW set-ups... I was just wondering how many of us keep the matching gap wedge and why, and how many Chuck the matching GW/AW/UW/DW for a speciality wedge and why?

Maybe Mike and Erik can word this better.

I'll start:

Currently, I am carrying a matching AW to my iron set, because I was having issues hitting a speciality wedge of similar Loft. I found I was having the same problem with the matching wedge until I stood perhaps 8-10 inches further from the ball. Now I hit it farther with all my irons.

I use my matching wedge, I believe its a 50 degree. Its my fav club. Use it anywhere from 120 to chipping onto the green and bump and runs. Im gaming TM speedbladez.

I have i irons and a Glide 52 degree wedge. I think having more of the "muscleback" style of wedge offers more versatility from 100 yards and in and around the greens.

There isn't a right or wrong answer, depends on the golfer. If it works for you, stick with the matching gap wedge. In 2014 Hunter Mahan played a good chunk of the season with i25 wedges and S55 irons.

One consideration is how you use your wedges. If you hit the GW for full shots, you might want to have the same feel as your PW and numbered irons.

If you use GW/AW and higher wedges mainly for partial shots, you might want to have the non-PWs as specialty wedges. If you're mostly partial shots, you may want a different shaft than with your irons.

And, it varies by iron set. The X20 matching AW was hard to control on distance, while the Nike Vapor Speed and TM SLDR AWs worked quite well.

End conclusion: go with what works for you. You find this out by testing clubs.

Depends on the set. Some brands include a gap wedge, some don't. I would either have the gap wedge match your full set or your other wedges. I have MP-59's to a PW. Then I have an Edel 52, 56, and 60 degree. I could easily get a set of clubs with a 50-52 degree as part of the iron set and be OK with just two Edel wedges.

Im sure I could game a different one, but the gap wedge in my set of wilson reflex is my favorite club. Its foolproof from 115 in. For some reason I never mishit that club.

I've done both.   I had some Cobras as my last set and the pitching wedge was 43 degrees, so I got the 50 gap wedge.   As manufacturers have reduced loft over the years, despite being able to launch higher, they've offered gap wedges as basically what an old pitching wedge was.   I did retire that gap for a 50 degree Vokey wedge because I felt it was more in line with what I wanted to do.   I felt the gap wedge was simply another iron and I wanted to have the best bounce option for my playing condition.

I don't use a matching set wedge. Currently play the Nike VR Forged 52 degree along with my Speedblades. In my experience, for a higher handicap player, I think it's easier to hit the "set" wedges. I was once there. Once I got better and more consistent with my ball striking, I moved to the players wedge. From 115 yards in, I don't need the help of a GI or SGI iron.

The funny thing about the Top Flite XL set is that it goes from a 42* 9i to just one wedge which is 50*. I have used that as my GW while using 46,54 and 58 degree Cleveland Wedges. I'm actually dropping it this weekend and experimenting with a 4i. I think that fact that it is different than the rest of my wedges is why I really don't mind dropping it. My 54 is my 80 yds and in club and I love it, 58 is only for specialty shots and steep bunkers. A full PW is 115 and I'm decent at partial wedge shots so I don't think I'll miss the GW too much.

No. I'm currently playing a set of Taylormade RSi 2s that didn't come with a GW, which kind of left me scrambling for one because my old Cleveland GW is 52° and doesn't fill the gap properly. I played with a vintage Ben Hogan PW because it fit properly but recently took that out of the bag because I hit it poorly. Found an old Wilson PW laying around the house so I put a new grip on it and will try it out for a while. Good thing about the Wilson is that it is designed like a wedge, whereas the Hogan is basically a high-lofted iron.

I'm probably going to have to buy a new GW at some point.

Ha. My cheap old self uses an old set of Dunlop DMTs where Ive replaced the PW with a used Wilson ProStaff and added a slightly less old Burner SW. I do not have a gapper in the bag.

I've always used a gap wedge that matches my wedges. But it may be fun to pick up an AP2 GW and try it out.

I'm hitting Callaway Apex and have the wedge, gap wedge and sand wedge(45, 50 and 55 loft).  First time ever to buy a set with matching wedges.  After a year of using the wedges, I am satisfied, but do wonder if it is time to take the wedges in to a shop and check the lofts.  I might be better off changing the lofts on all the wedges I carry about four degrees difference.  I also carry a Callaway 58 degree wedge.
