I'm not sure how Dustin "gave it away". He was never in the lead. I will say this about DJ, I have never considered him to be a great putter and if he ever becomes a great putter....he's gonna win a lot more often. Maybe he's not a great green reader? I guess I should say, "he's not a great putter in major championships". I can't recall him making a huge putt in a major. I can recall him missing some huge putts in majors.

Dustin Johnson shot 82 at Pebble Beach in 2010 when he was leading.

So huh?

Jason Gore had a bad day once too.

If you Google Varner 81 worst final group, you will see a ton of articles saying Varner had the highest score from the final group in a major.  I happened to see one of those articles, and like an idiot, I trusted it.  The same article said it was the first round in the 80's from a final group.

Last night while I was brushing my tooth (I'm very old), I thought, wait a minute, Rory shot 80 in the 2011 Masters.  So I knew then that the article was wrong.  I checked just now, and at least in USA Today, they have corrected it to say Varner's score was the highest in the final round of this year's PGA, which is about as different as you can get, and hardly worth a separate AP article.  I guess it's possible that it's the first time that the highest score of the final round came from the final group, which would be worth an article, but I'm too lazy to check if that's true.

It was from the AP.  Ten years ago or so, on the old Golf Channel board, I used to get into arguments with a guy called Robo about Doug Ferguson, the chief golf reporter for the AP.  Robo was evidently a friend of his, and took it personally when I would complain that Ferguson got his stats wrong in almost every article.  No excuse for that with somebody having the resources of the AP to back him.  I don't think Ferguson wrote this one, but it looks like the AP is still very sloppy on its stats.

So, you are right, I was wrong, and I will never use info from an AP article again without checking it first.

I don't think he gave it away, but he did collapse after he managed to put himself in a position to win.  BK was crumbling.  DJ's collapse settled him down and gave him back his breathing space.

One time Bart was making a fiery comeback and on the 17th green I looked over at him and gave him what I call "the ice stare".   He proceeded to hit it in the woods.

Yeah, but Bart sucks.

I wonder if the bad crowd behavior is worse this year or about the same as usual. I'm going to go with the latter, but hard to measure as evidence is all anecdotal.

Yeah, Brooks gave him the ice stare. Nobody (except for Tiger) can withstand that.

Sounds like he should be doing commercials for Dos Equis with that famousdavis guy who wins club championships without even having to play them.

FWIW, after the PGA, DJ is ranked 7th in SG: Putting on the PGA Tour this season. Prior to the PGA, he was ranked 5th. Last season he ranked 25th for the whole season.

Here are his recent strokes gained putting numbers in majors (where available)

2018 Masters -- Finished T10

2018 US Open +.755  Solo 3rd

2018 Open Championship -- M.C.

2018 PGA Championship -.084 T27

2019 Masters -- T2

2019 PGA Championship +.748 Solo 2nd

You have to be at least a pretty good putter in majors to get 4 top 10s in your last 6 majors.

The same thing can be said about most golfers on the PGA tour

As a 5-time club champion, I understand what it takes to win.  Yes, you can absolutely give it away even if you are not in the lead.  Dustin had the momentum and was closing in on Koepka, who's balls were in his throat.  All Dustin had to do is avoid bogey and he would have won.  I know this to be true.

I see things in the game that others do not.  Our head greenskeeper is named Tiny.  He's anything but Tiny.  He's probably 450 lbs on a good day.  Nevertheless, Tiny has always said to me "Champ, I notice that you play a different game.  What's your secret?".

I reply "Tiny, it's the ice cold stare".

No you don't. You cannot prove that if DJ made par on 16 and 17 instead of bogeys that he would have won the tournament.

Don't mess with Bart - he just hit the 17th green into the woods.  True story - I read it on the internet.

I don't appreciate that.  I've contributed to very few threads on this fine forum.  The first was about the benefits of Ping Eye 2 irons and now I'm talking about the PGA Championship.  I fail to see how that is disingenuous.  I'm a Club Champion and once played to a scratch.  I doubt if there is anyone on this forum who could beat me at a tough course.

I have to warn you, though.  I'm a player.  Even if I'm down 3 holes you aren't in the clear.  I bear down, put on the icy stair and there are few men who do not fall apart.
