Would You Rather Number 51:

Would you rather...

Show up at the course with not enough time to get ready to play? You have just enough time to get from your car to the first tee, maybe take a few practice swings and that's about all.

or

Show up at the course with way too much time to get ready? Let's say 3 hours early? And just for fun let's pretend the course has no bar or restaurant. You can get water or snacks, but no "real" food.

And in case it matters let's say your buddies with which you are playing all show up about 40 minutes before your tee-time.

I work full time not in golf, have a wife who works full time on an opposite schedule than me, and two young kids who are not yet old enough to golf.

Getting to the course 3 hours early with a ton of time to practice followed by time on the course sounds like an absolute dream to me.

Would You Rather #52:

Would you rather play in a group where the folks you play with take each round incredibly seriously? They are complete sticklers for the rules. They even get upset if anyone hits out of turn.

or

Would you rather play with a group that's very casual with the rules? They take "breakfast balls", They knock your ball back to you every time you are inside 5 feet and say "That's good." They play out of bounds as if it's a lateral hazard. They take very liberal drops.

Our church men’s group is very laid back (option 2 pretty much describes the format) so that’s the format I am most used to (except we say “good” of w/in 3’). The former I have not had the opportunity to play with so no experience there.  Given that, I am in the option 2 camp as I really just want to play “relaxed” and not “stressed”.

The latter group, absolutely. People can do anything they want as long as they move along at a proper pace. That is the beauty of golf, how someone plays has little bearing on what I do. I would ask them to not give me putts but other than that, all is good as long as they don't badger me to play for money.

The first one. I don't care what they do, but don't knock my ball back to me, etc.

And then don't brag about your 78 with liberal drops, gimmes, etc.

The serious group, for one reason only.  I don't care at all what other people in their own round, they can take all the breakfast balls and illegal drops they want.  But don't touch my ball for "gimmes."

The former. As long as they’re not the type that’s gonna bitch about me taking an unplayable to the committee. But that’s a story for another day.

I know this is a little against the rules of the thread… Erik forgive me. On the gimmes discussion briefly, what if you’re playing a form of Match Play (i.e. Four-ball is the most common)

Within the rules of the contest, then that's fine.  But typically all the golf I play is just me vs the course, and in that situation I would just want my own round to be respected

Most of the time I think I would be happier playing with the second group.

But I think either group can be either fun or not fun to play with. I think it depends on their attitude and self-awareness., If they are nice and respectful to me, are in a good mood or at least not stomping around angry, not jabbering, etc., they can play any way they choose to play. If I'm in a group where we are all competing, then hands down of course I want the former.

In general, I much prefer to play by the Rules, so I'd prefer the first group.  However, getting "upset" when someone hits out of turn is over the top.  In Stroke Play, there's no penalty, so why be upset?  In Match Play, you can require your opponent to replay the shot without getting upset.  I'm reading this as if ALL players in the group try their best to play within the Rules, so playing out of turn would be pretty rare anyway.  So yes, play by the Rules, but no, don't get upset.

The simple fact of the matter is that I'm not really good enough to take things too seriously myself, so I guess I'll take the second group. I'm not above picking up on a hole here and there and haven't even kept a handicap for the past couple of years. I also really don't care much about how anyone else in my group plays anyway.

That said, I'd make a point of having them not knock balls back to me. I like to putt them out particularly if its for par or better.

I’d rather play with the first group. I have nothing against the second group and occasionally play with people like that but that’s not golf, it’s golf-adjacent. I played with some friends like that just a couple of weeks ago and we had a good time, but I went ahead and declared it a practice round before I teed off 😃

Would you rather....

Shoot 10 shots worse than your typical score, hit the ball terrible most of the round, make mistakes that annoy you, but have your first ever hole-in-one,

~or~

Shoot your best round ever, passing whatever milestone you are aiming for (break 70, break 80, etc.) by 3 shots, but without a hole-in-one or other "special" holes or shots.

This one is easy for me, I've had 3 aces, so I'd take the personal best score, 3 under par.

Easy - the second option, no questions asked as the name of the game is to have the lowest score possible (think book “Lowest Score Wins”). Never had a hole-in-one (been real close a couple of times), best rounds played are those that border on boring (lots of pars with a birdie or two thrown in), so an all time low score would be well remembered.

    • Day 470 - 2026-01-13 Got some work in while some players were using the sim, so I had to stick around. 🙂 Good thing too, since… I hadn't yet practiced today until about 6:45 tonight. 😛
    • That's not quite the same thing as what some people messaged me today.
    • Day 152 1-12 More reps bowing wrists in downswing. Still pausing at the top. Making sure to get to lead side and getting the ball to go left. Slow progress is better than no progress.
    • Yea, if I were to make a post arguing against the heat map concept, citing some recent robot testing would be my first point. The heat map concept is what I find interesting, more on that below. The robot testing I have looked at, including the one you linked, do discreet point testing then provide that discrete data in various forms. Which as you said is old as the hills, if you know of any other heat map concept type testing, I would be interested in links to that though! No, and I did say in my first post "if this heat map data is valid and reliable" meaning I have my reservations as well. Heck beyond reservations. I have some fairly strong suspicions there are flaws. But all I have are hunches and guesses, if anyone has data to share, I would be interested to see it.  My background is I quit golfing about 9 years ago and have been toying with the idea of returning. So far that has been limited to a dozen range sessions in late Summer through Fall when the range closed. Then primarily hitting foam balls indoors using a swing speed monitor as feedback. Between the range closing and the snow flying I did buy an R10 and hit a few balls into a backyard net. The heat map concept is a graphical representation of efficiency (smash factor) loss mapped onto the face of the club. As I understand it to make the representation agnostic to swing speed or other golfer specific swing characteristics. It is more a graphical tool not a data tool. The areas are labeled numerically in discrete 1% increments while the raw data is changing at ~0.0017%/mm and these changes are represented as subtle changes in color across those discrete areas. The only data we care about in terms of the heat map is the 1.3 to 1.24 SF loss and where was the strike location on the face - 16mm heal and 5mm low. From the video the SF loss is 4.6% looking up 16mm heal and 5mm low on the heat map it is on the edge of where the map changes from 3% loss to 4%. For that data point in the video, 16mm heal, 5mm low, 71.3 mph swing speed (reference was 71.4 mph), the distance loss was 7.2% or 9 yards, 125 reference distance down to 116. However, distance loss is not part of a heat map discussion. Distance loss will be specific to the golfers swing characteristics not the club. What I was trying to convey was that I do not have enough information to determine good or bad. Are the two systems referencing strike location the same? How accurate are the two systems in measuring even if they are referencing from the same location? What variation might have been introduced by the club delivery on the shot I picked vs the reference set of shots? However, based on the data I do have and making some assumptions and guesses the results seem ok, within reason, a good place to start from and possibly refine. I do not see what is wrong with 70mph 7 iron, although that is one of my other areas of questioning. The title of the video has slow swing speed in all caps, and it seems like the videos I watch define 7i slow, medium, and fast as 70, 80, and 90. The whole question of mid iron swing speed and the implications for a players game and equipment choices is of interest to me as (according to my swing speed meter) over my ~decade break I lost 30mph swing speed on mine.
    • Maxfli, Maltby, Golfworks, all under the Dicks/Golf Galaxy umbrella... it's all a bit confounding. Looking at the pictures, they all look very, very similar in their design. I suspect they're the same club, manufactured in the same factory in China, just with different badging.  The whacky pricing structure has soured me, so I'll just cool my heels a bit. The new Mizuno's will be available to test very soon. I'm in no rush.
