General COVID-19 Topic

I went to our season ending simulator golf league dinner tonight.   Other than the staff, I was the only one wearing a mask.  A few had already received their vaccines but most hadn't.   Our neighbors, even after contracting Covid, still believe the whole this is nothing more than the flu.. 🤥

Michigan opened up vaccination to all ages earlier than expected. I snagged an appointment for April 6. One week to go.

Colorado is opening it up to everybody on Friday. Haven’t been able to get an appointment yet, but I’m on every waitlist possible.

The many who are refusing to get the vaccine are threatening the 'herd immunity' aspect:

" According to a December survey undertaken by the Pew Research Center, nearly 40% of Americans say they will definitely not or probably not get the COVID-19 vaccine when it becomes available to them. Gallup polls put the number at 37%. That’s bad news not just for the vaccine refusers themselves but for the public as a whole. Experts including Dr. Anthony Fauci, head of the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases, had previously concluded that achieving herd immunity—the point at which a population is sufficiently vaccinated that a spreading virus can’t find enough new hosts—would require anywhere from 60% to 70% of Americans to take the vaccines. But lately, he and others have been inching that number upward, now estimating that herd immunity could require as much as 85% vaccine coverage."

I'm happy to have gotten my second Pfizer jab yesterday.  Feeling a little lethargic today, but otherwise side effects are minimal.

With all you guys/gals getting your Covid-19 vaccines this forum might be one of the safest places in the U.S. to hang out.  Other than Dr. Fauci's home (but his security guards keep turning me away).

To be fair, he moved the goalposts when more Americans said they would get the vaccine:

So his 85% estimate number is just that, an estimate.  He had originally said 60-70% for a long time.  

My feeling is that more Americans will get comfortable with getting the vaccine so that 40% number will drop.  I just hope he doesn't say, "It's actually 90%+" at that point.  This doesn't exude confidence when the number is unknown.

I just hope that as the vaccine proliferates and we get more data back from Israel we come to that understanding quickly and confidently.

I don't get that.  I sort of get why someone who didn't have it could think that, but someone who had it ... ugh.

I'm young, I'm in pretty good physical shape, I have no preexisting conditions (truly none, not "none").  If that thing I was struck with was the flu, it was the worst flu I ever had, lasted longer than any flu I had, and somehow came coupled with asthma, which I've never had before (or, thankfully, since), even when I was whatever the opposite of physically fit is (much younger, somehow didn't have asthma).  When I had, whatever it was, if I spoke for more than a few minutes at a time, I had to rest for a few minutes... and I talk for a living, so that wasn't a happy situation to be in!  

And I'm one of the lucky ones as far as that went.

Sorry for ranting, it's one of the few views on either side I truly do not understand.

Why?

If you get it, and it's kinda like the flu to you, why wouldn't that reinforce the "it's just the flu" idea?

Just because it was a bad flu for you doesn't mean that is how it is for everyone.

My understanding is that what I had was on the mild end of what someone would get for this, so I don't see someone having what I had (or worse) and thinking it's just the flu.  Maybe I'm wrong about something in there.

You clearly are as 50% or whatever were literally asymptomatic which is much LESS than the flu.
