I typically play with the same 10-12 guys, but I have heard some pretty strange "jokes"/comments when I got paired with strangers...exclusively from older men. Being in my late 20s, it makes me a bit sad that older men can act/talk like that. I'll laugh at a good joke any day, but a racially toned joke always gets devilish stare from. All I can say is trash comes in all colors.

After the brotha comment, you should've told him your wife was black. He probably would've played the rest of the round in silence.

There is an older gentleman at my home course who spends the entire round telling his partners racist, sexist, and sexual one-liner jokes. I try my hardest not to get paired with this man.

Unfortunately at my former home course those guys are the rangers.

Funny I would have said the same thing and that my adoptive daughter was Chinese and see what he or they had to say after that.

No room or time in my life for people like that on or off the course.

That situation happened once, I was paired with  a single and a two and the singles wife was black and I knew it but didn't say anything, she was at the course taking a lesson and at the turn she joined and I left, I wonder how it went.

It takes a lot to get under my skin so I probably would have ignored him as you did. I was playing in a group recently and one of the guys made some comment about Asian women, and the other guy in the group knew my wife was Asian told him to pipe down, but I told him not to bother. This guy was not about to change and it wasn't worth the time to correct him.

I would be polite and quiet during the round.  At the end of the round I would tell them that I did not enjoy playing with them and that their bigoted and racist comments were very inappropriate and made them look like asses.  I would also state that I would request never to play with them again if ever paired up by the course.  Then I would walk away without letting them counter.

I wouldn't have chastised him or anything, but I wouldn't have given him the normal conversational pleasantries. So I wouldn't have nodded, or said "yeah, mhm," or whatever. And I probably wouldn't have started any conversations.

I like these two the best.  I probably would just have given them the nods or "uh huh" or whatever, but in the future I'll probably take jamo's approach.  Or boogie's if its more than one or two comments.

I would have acted confused and asked him what he meant. If he just repeated the joke I would still act all bewildered and tell him I don't get it. I would continue in this vein until he is forced to clearly explain his racist joke and then I'd shrug and say, "I still don't get how that's funny...so why is the black guy running???"

Either he'll feel like a total jackass from being drawn out into the light, like a scrambling cockroach, or he'll stop talking to me.

I wish I'd thought of one of these in the moment.  Both good ideas.  I'll store them away for use if something like this happens again.

My niece was adopted from China, so I would've said the same thing. It would've been awesome to look at him dead serious and say "my niece is ornamental, is there anything else you'd like to comment on?"

Gave up on trying to re-educate people long ago. Look at it as a winnowing process. Thanks for letting me know that you're a tool -- let's never play together again. :-)

Its funny you say this because my wife is black and I am white. I really get a kick when people make racist jokes to me. I never say anything and ignore it but the look on their faces when they meet my wife is priceless. You can tell they want to crawl into the nearest hole lol!

You can't fix stupid, especially not on a golf course.  Anything you said to educate the guy would have been likely turned back on you for being a stiff or referring to you as Al Sharpton.

Mentioning your wife was black would have been funny to see his reaction but I'd likely not have come up with it out on the course and instead said exactly as you did, nothing.

Stupidity that is offensive should not be allowed to go unchallenged.  The guy does this because people allow him to.  If every time this guy pulled that crap someone said, "Hey buddy, save it for when you are with people who think that is funny" he wouldn't do it anymore - at least among people he doesn't know. There is no need for a confrontation, but a guy like this needs to be stigmatized.  We've lost the ability to stigmatize people, which is too bad since stigma was society's chief defense against non-criminal asshattery.
